Dracula (1958) 4K Blu-ray

Warner Archive, in association with Hammer Films, is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Terence Fisher's Dracula (1958), starring Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Michael Gough, Melissa Stribling, and Carol Marsh. The releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 27.

One Night Only Collector's Edition 4K Blu-ray

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced that it will release on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray Will Gluck's romantic dramedy One Night Only (2026), starring Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner, Bobby Cannavale, Molly Ringwald, and LeVar Burton. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

Gwendoline Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray

Severin Films has dated and detailed its upcoming Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray release of Just Jaeckin's Gwendoline (1984), starring Tawny Kitaen, Brent Huff, Zabou Breitman, Bernadette Lafont, and Jean Rougerie. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on November 24.

This Week on Blu-ray: August 31-September 6

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

Harman Kardon Announce Blu-ray Player

At their product launch in Munich, Germany today, high-end electronics manufacturer Harman Kardon announced that they would launch a Blu-ray player this summer at IFA. No details were given about possible features or specs of the player except for the price, which is expected to be between £400-£500. Also, no indication was given as to if the player would be a BonusView or BD-Live machine.

LionsGate Gets Blu-ray Boost

During an investor's call, Lionsgate president Steve Beeks commented on how well the studio was doing with regards to Blu-ray sales. During the month of January, Lionsgate's revenue from Blu-ray sales was seven times higher than the same time last year. More units have been shipped from the studio in the last two months than for the entire previous year.

Michael Bay Praises Blu-ray's Success

Outspoken director Michael Bay is once again singing the praises of Blu-ray, this time in celebration of the recent Blu-ray successes. At the Visual Effects Society's sixth annual award show, where he presented the award for animated character in a motion picture, he remarked, "Blu-ray's better, and I told everyone. I was very vocal about it. I knew HD [DVD] was not going to make it."

Panasonic Details DMP-BD50

Panasonic has released specifications for their highly anticipated upcoming BD-Live (Profile 2.0) Blu-ray player, the DMP-BD50. As a BD-Live player, the biggest difference between this player and the current BonusView (Profile 1.1) player is the Ethernet port. Also of note is that this player will support both internal decoding and bitstream output for Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD (both HR and MA) audio formats and is a certified DivX product.

The titles are divided into four categories (make sure you click on all four to see all the titles available) which span many different studios. The Water Horse Gets Detailed

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has revealed the extra features that will accompany the film on the upcoming Blu-ray release of 'The Water Horse: Legend of the Deep', due in stores April 8th. Viewers will be presented with six featurettes, including "Creating Crusoe", "Myths and Legends", "Setting the Scene", "The Characters", "The Story", and "Water Works: Creating the Water Horse". Also available on the disc will be numerous deleted scenes.

Led Zeppelin Gets Announced Again

Warner Home Video has announced that they will finally be releasing the twice delayed concert film 'Led Zeppelin: The Song Remains the Same' for Blu-ray on February 26th. The title nearly met its most recent release date, only to be pulled a few days later. This resulted in a few copies making it to store shelves where fans eagerly grabbed them up. Even Warner's sales department has sent copies to those who used their online store. Now, with an official release, this title should be readily available for all soon.

Hi-Fi Klubben Announces Exclusive Blu-ray Support

Scandinavian retailer Hi-Fi Klubben has announced that from this point forward they will no longer support the HD DVD format, and now focus all their resources on providing their customers with the best Blu-ray experience. Among other reasons, including the announcement of Warner Brothers going Blu-ray exclusive, Hi-Fi Klubben cited a lack of response from the HD DVD Promo Group as a major factor in them going Blu-ray exclusive.

Spain's Tripictures Goes Blu-ray Exclusive

Spanish film distributor Tripictures has announced that they will release high definition films exclusively in the Blu-ray format. As the official Spanish distributor for New Line, this means that Europeans will soon has access to a multitude of great releases from that studio on Blu-ray. The first Blu-ray titles to be released will be 'Hairspray' on February 20th, followed by Rush Hour 3 in March. No specs or extras have been announced at this time.

Best Buy to Officially Recommend Blu-ray to Customers

Beginning in early March, retailer Best Buy will begin officially recommending Blu-ray as best choice for high definition movies to their customer base. Since the beginning of the format war, Best Buy has silently stood on the sidelines providing both the Blu-ray and HD DVD format for consumers to choose. Current sales data now shows that Blu-ray is their choice, and the retailer will soon carry the official stance that Blu-ray is best high definition format.

Netflix Goes Blu-ray Exclusive

The popular online video rental service Netflix has announced that they have decided to support Blu-ray exclusively for high definition movie rentals. Pointing to the Warner Brothers exclusivity announcement as the main reason for the shift, Netflix will no longer purchase movies in the rival HD DVD format, and once the life cycle for those discs has ended, they will no longer stock the format for rent.

Dewey Cox Walks Hard on Blu-ray

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced that they are bringing the comedy 'Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story' in unrated form to Blu-ray on April 8th, day-and-date with the DVD release. This two disc release contains an unrated version with an additional 24 minutes of footage not seen in theaters. No specs have been announced at this time, but expect AVC 1080p video and numerous Dolby TrueHD tracks.

Steep Announced for Blu-ray Release

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring the documentary 'Steep' to Blu-ray on March 25th, one week after the DVD release. No specs have been announced at this time, extras include an audio commentary track, Q&A with writer/director/executive producer Mark Obenhaus and skiers Ingrid Backstrom and Andrew McLean, an interview with Doug Coombs, and two photo montages.

Sony Announces The Water Horse for Blu-ray

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring the fantasy film 'The Water Horse: Legend of the Deep' to Blu-ray on April 8th, day-and-date with the DVD release. No technical specs have been released at this time, but included extras will be deleted scenes and six featurettes. Exclusive to the Blu-ray will be an interactive game.

D&M Holdings Plans New Blu-ray Players by March

D&M Holdings, Inc., the parent company of many high-end home theater equipment brands such as Denon and Marantz, has revealed in their quarterly financial report that they would be introducing "additional [Blu-ray] models" in Q4 of FY07 (which ends on March 31, 2008 for D&M Holdings). One of these models is most likely the Marantz Blu-ray player, but no word on what other Blu-ray products may be released to the market at this time.

I Am Legend Gets Detailed

Warner Home Video has revealed specifications and extra features for the Blu-ray release of 'I Am Legend', which is set to be released March 18th, day-and-date with the DVD. The disc will contain two versions of the film - the theatrical cut and an alternate theatrical version with a controversial alternate ending. Video will be presented in 2.40:1 1080p VC-1 and accompanied by a 5.1 Dolby TrueHD soundtrack .

Updated Warner Release Slate for 2008 and Beyond

Our good friends over at The Digital Bits were able to squeeze Warner for a little more information about some of the catalog titles expected to be released on Blu-ray this year. The current goal is to release a Blu-ray version of any catalog film day-and-date with a Special Edition DVD release. This will take some time to implement, but they hope to get that policy up-and-running by the end of the summer.

Echo Bridge Plan Blu-ray Releases for April

Echo Bridge Home Entertainment has announced they are releasing six films from their catalog on April 1st. Included in the slate are '10.5 Apocalypse', 'Blackbeard', 'Category 7: The End of the World', 'The Curse of King Tut's Tomb', 'The Last Sentinel' and 'Artie Lange's Beer League'. All titles will get 1080p treatment with a Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack. No extras have been announced at this time.

The Air I Breathe Announced

Image Entertainment has announced that they will release 'The Air I Breathe' for Blu-ray on May 6th, day-and-date with the DVD release. Despite having a cast of well-known actors, including Andy Garcia, Kevin Bacon, and Sarah Michelle Gellar, the film failed to make an impact at the box office. Video will be presented in 1080p accompanied by a DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack. No extras have been announced at this time.

Filmax Now Exclusively Blu-ray Too

Spanish distributor Filmax has joined ranks with Manga Films in revealing that they will only release high definition titles on the Blu-ray format. Work has begun on a handful of titles for Blu-ray release, including 'Resident Evil', 'Flyboys', and 'Million Dollar Baby', but no release date has been given for any of the titles.

Sweden Goes Blu-ray

Two of the largest film companies in Sweden have announced their intentions to support Blu-ray exclusively. Following the Warner Brother's announcement, Swedish film companies SF and Scanbox have announced that they are scrapping all plans to release films on HD DVD, and will release exclusively on the Blu-ray format. Scanbox is expected to release their first HD titles in April.

Kaleidescape Reveals Blu-ray Plans

In an announcement sent out to its dealers, high-end media server company Kaleidescape has revealed plans to integrate a Blu-ray player into their media systems. The player, currently under development, will integrate into existing servers and provide playback capabilities for Blu-ray content. They plan on releasing this new player sometime next year.

Warner Reveals Blu-ray Releases for 2008 and Beyond

During a press event held to celebrate the studio's 85th Anniversary yesterday, Warner Brothers revealed some of their planned upcoming Blu-ray releases. Included in the list is the highly anticipated Blu-ray release of 'Batman Begins', as well as a number of classic Warner titles, such as 'The Wizard of Oz', which will go into moratorium soon after release.

Samsung Updates BD-P1200 Firmware

Samsung has released a firmware upgrade for their BD-P1200 Blu-ray disc player. The firmware has been updated to version 2.1, and can be updated either by using the player's built in Ethernet port or downloading a CD image from the Samsung website. The firmware addresses many compatibility issues the player has had with recent, high-profile titles.

Alvin and the Chipmunks Announced for Blu-ray (Updated)

Fox Home Entertainment has announced that they will release the animated/live action film 'Alvin and the Chipmunks' on Blu-ray April 1st, day-and-date with the DVD release. The title will come on a BD-25 with AVC 1080p video and an English 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack. Extras include the two featurettes "Chip-Chip-Hurray!" and "Hitting the Harmony", as well as a digital copy of the film.

Six Degrees Sees Exclusive Amazon Blu-ray Release

National Geographic has revealed that they will offer the upcoming program 'Six Degrees Could Change the World' in high definition exclusively for Blu-ray on April 22nd. No specs have been announced for the title, which will be sold exclusively through Amazon.com, as it has yet to even air. Expect more information to be released regarding this title once the program airs on February 10th.

Space Ace Announced For Blu-ray

Digital Leisure has announced that they will bring 'Space Ace' to Blu-ray on April 8th. 'Space Ace' is an interactive movie/game produced by the legendary Don Bluth Studios, the same studio which brought Blu-ray fans 'Dragon's Lair'. For this release, Digital Leisure has rendered a completely new 1080p transfer from the original source, providing the most vivid images ever seen from the game.

Highlight Video Goes Blu-ray Exclusive

German distributor Highlight Video has announced that, beginning on March 1st, they will exclusively support Blu-ray by only releasing high definition titles in that format. The first film released by Highlight Video which will fall under this new policy will be 'Lissi, und der wilder Kaiser', an animated parody of the 1955 German film 'Sissi'.

Spanish distributor Manga Films has revealed that they will begin releasing titles in the Blu-ray format. The first titles to come from the distributor will be 'Mr. Brooks' and 'Rambo', both due to be released in July. No specs or extras have been announced at this time for either release, so Spanish Blu-ray fans will have to wait just a bit longer for those details.

A Passage to India Comes to Blu-ray (Updated)

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring the Academy Awards winning film 'A Passage to India' to Blu-ray on April 15th, day-and-date with the DVD re-release. No technical specs have been announced at this time, but the title will receive a good amount of extras for the release of this 1984 classic film.
