Dracula (1958) 4K Blu-ray

Warner Archive, in association with Hammer Films, is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Terence Fisher's Dracula (1958), starring Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Michael Gough, Melissa Stribling, and Carol Marsh. The releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 27.

One Night Only Collector's Edition 4K Blu-ray

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced that it will release on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray Will Gluck's romantic dramedy One Night Only (2026), starring Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner, Bobby Cannavale, Molly Ringwald, and LeVar Burton. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

Gwendoline Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray

Severin Films has dated and detailed its upcoming Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray release of Just Jaeckin's Gwendoline (1984), starring Tawny Kitaen, Brent Huff, Zabou Breitman, Bernadette Lafont, and Jean Rougerie. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on November 24.

This Week on Blu-ray: August 31-September 6

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

Transformers Blu-ray Gets Detailed

Paramount Home Entertainment has revealed the specs for the upcoming Blu-ray release of Michael Bay's blockbuster hit 'Transformers', due to hit store shelves on September 2nd. On this two disc special edition, video will be presented in 2.35:1 1080p AVC and be accompanied by both a 5.1 PCM and 5.1 Dolby TrueHD lossless soundtracks.

Image Announces Re-Cycle for Blu-ray

Image Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring the horror film 'Re-Cycle' to Blu-ray on September 23rd, day-and-date with the DVD release. The film, which is from the same people who brought you 'The Eye', will benefit from 1080p video and a DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack.

Phones Gets the Blu-ray Hook-Up

NTT DoCoMo, the cellphone industry leader in Japan, has announced their latest line of mobile phones, which are set to arrive in stores next week. An interesting addition to all the DoCoMo phones is the ability to connect to Blu-ray players (via USB) to receive a portable version of films for viewing on the go.

DVDPlay Adds Blu-ray to Grocery Stores

DVDPlay has announced that they will add Blu-ray titles to their popular kiosk style DVD rental machines that are present at many grocery stores this June. They will offer these titles at the same $1.49 rental fee as their DVD selections. The first Blu-ray titles available via the kiosks will be 'Untraceable' and 'Men In Black', both of which should be available around June 10th.

Blu-ray Recorders Taking Japan by Storm

Market research firm BCN, Inc. has determined that during the month of April, sales of Blu-ray recorders for the first time exceed those of DVD recorders. Additionally, Blu-ray recorders made up 32 percent of the overall optical disc player/recorder sales for the month. Sales are 21 time higher than this time last year, showing that Japan is adopting Blu-ray at a record pace.

Sony Settles Blu-ray Patent Dispute

Sony has settled a lawsuit with Columbia University Professor Emerita Gertrude Neumark Rothschild which focused on the technology used for basic semiconductor technology used in current Blu-ray players. During the 80's and 90's, Professor Rothschild owns patents for wide band-gap semiconductors which are widely recognized to have led to the development of short-wavelength light emitting diodes, such as the blue laser diode used for Blu-ray.

Bandai Reveals Sword of the Stranger Blu-ray Plans

At the Bandai Entertainment Panel, Robert Napton revealed that they recently acquired rights to 'Sword of the Stranger' will result in the eventual Blu-ray release of the title. The company is currently making arrangements for a theatrical release, but once that has been completed, a Blu-ray release should be expected.

Afro Samurai US Bound Blu-ray

FUNimation has announced that they will bring the director's cut of the Samuel L. Jackson animated series 'Afro Samurai: Season One' to Blu-ray on August 26th. Video will be presented in 1.78:1 widescreen with a 5.1 Dolby Digital soundtrack. Extras will mirror that of the previous Director's Cut DVD release.

Top Gun Landing on Blu-ray this July

Paramount Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring the Tom Cruise 80's classic film 'Top Gun' to Blu-ray on July 29th. Originally announced for Blu-ray last year, the release was canceled when Paramount went HD DVD exclusive. Now that Paramount is back in the Blu, they have reannounced this classic title.

Harold and Kumar Coming to Blu-ray

New Line Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring both films from the comedy duo Harold and Kumar to Blu-ray. Coming on July 29th, the studio will release both 'Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle' and 'Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay', day-and-date with the DVD releases. Both releases will feature a digital copy of the film which viewers can transfer to their computers or portable video devices.

Starship Troopers Blu-rays Pushed into August

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has revealed the specs for the upcoming Blu-ray releases of 'Starship Troopers', 'Starship Troopers: Marauder', and the 'Starship Troopers Box Set' which will include all three "Starship Troopers" films in stunning high definition. All three releases have been pushed back from their original July 29th release date to August 5th.

Blu-ray Transformers is Coming!

The folks at TVShowsonDVD.com have the inside scoop on one of the biggest blockbuster hits of last year finally making its way to Blu-ray. According to their sources, 'Transformers' will finally be arriving for Blu-ray on September 2nd. The release is expected to mirror the previous HD DVD release (minus the glitches, of course).

Warner Announces Beetlejuice for Blu-ray

Warner Home Video has announced that they will bring a newly restored version of 'Beetlejuice' to Blu-ray on September 16th, day-and-date with the DVD re-release. This 20th Anniversary Deluxe edition will feature 1080p VC-1 video accompanied by a Dolby TrueHD soundtrack. The Blu-ray release will also feature an exclusive CD soundtrack sampler.

Torchwood Season One Coming to Blu-ray

BBC Home Video has announced that they will release the first season of the acclaimed British series "Torchwood" for Blu-ray. On September 16th, they will release 'Torchwood: The Complete First Season' on six BD-25s. Video will be presented with 16:9 high definition and accompanied by a DTS surround sound track.

A Star Is Born Coming to Blu-ray

Warner Brothers has revealed that they are currently restoring the 1964 classic 'A Star is Born' at 6K resolution, in hopes of soon releasing it as a Blu-ray disc. The film, which stars Judy Garland and James Mason, will be the first film to be completely mastered at 6K - from scanning to restoring to mastering - and is expected to take six months to complete.

Blu-ray Comes to China

The Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) has announced that eleven Chinese electronics manufacturers have been approved to begin Blu-ray disc and Blu-ray player production, starting next year. The companies, which include TCL, Malata, and Desay, have all turned to Blu-ray since the fall of HD DVD in order to get in to the growing high definition market.

Panasonic Announces First Single-Chip LSI

Panasonic has announced that they have developed the world's first Blu-ray Disc player-specific single-chip signal processing LSI. This new chip, which not only 50% smaller, but also uses 25% less power, is compliant with BD-Live (Profile v2.0) standards. Up until now, Blu-ray Disc players required separate front end and back end LSI in addition to seven external memory chips.

Smallville Season 7 Coming to Blu-ray

Warner Home Video has announced that they will bring 'Smallville Season 7' to Blu-ray on September 9th, day-and-date with the DVD release. Video will be presented in 1.78:1 1080p VC-1 accompanied by a 5.1 Dolby Digital soundtrack. Extras include two featurettes ("Supergirl" and "Jimmy on Jimmy") as well as a series of webisodes.

Taiwan Kolin to Start Production of Blu-ray Players

The Chinese newspaper Economic Daily News has revealed that the Taiwan-based manufacturer Taiwan Kolin will begin production of a Blu-ray player during the third quarter of this year. Those consumers in the US will be more familiar with the Olevia brand of products that the player will most be sold under.

Denon Announces New Blu-ray Player

Denon has announced that they will introduce a new lower-priced BonusView (profile v1.1) Blu-ray Disc player to the market this fall. The player, the Denon DVD-1800BD, will feature HDMI v1.3 that allows it stream all high definition audio formats as well as output a 1080p24 video (in deep color when available). Additionally, Denon remains committed to providing the best overall experience by including high quality Burr-Brown DACs.

Shutter Announced for Blu-ray

Fox Home Entertainment has announced that they will release the horror film 'Shutter' for Blu-ray on July 15th, day-and-date with the DVD release. Video will be presented as 1080p AVC accompanied by a DTS-HD Master Audio lossless soundtrack. The disc will be encoded using BD-Java and utilize a BD-50 to hold the extensive amount of extras.

Lionsgate Announces Belly for Blu-ray

Lionsgate Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring the rapper-infused film 'Belly' to Blu-ray on August 12th to coincide with the DVD release of 'Belly 2: Millionaire Boyz Club'. Official specs have not been announcd, but we expect that video will be presented as 1080p AVC and accompanied by a 7.1 DTS-HD Master Audio Soundtrack.

3D Blu-ray Closer to Reality

TDVision Systems will present a new 3D system at SID 2008 that not only makes use of a standard Blu-ray disc, but is also compatible with existing, non-3D Blu-ray players. Unlike other high definition 3D options, when the 3D film is played in a non-3D Blu-ray player, it will play without any loss of quality, color, frame rate, or resolution.

Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles Announced for Blu-ray

In somewhat of a surprise announcement from Warner, the studio has set 'Terminator - The Sarah Connor Chronicles: The Complete First Season' for Blu-ray release on August 19th. Debuting day-and-date with the DVD version, this Blu-ray edition will feature all nine, hour-long episodes from the show's strike-shortened first season. Audio and video specs have not yet been revealed, but it's a safe bet that Warner will be utilizing VC-1 for the set's video encode.
