Forworld Electronics has announced that they have begun selling a budget Blu-ray Disc player under their brand name Pony in Taiwan. The player, which retails for about $320US, is cheaper than competing players from Blu-ray leaders such as Sony and Panasonic, and is expected to drive down costs of Blu-ray players in that market.
Little is known about the player, except that it uses a Sony drive and a Sigma chipset. Other Taiwan manufacturers are looking towards using Lite-On drives and MediaTek chipsets to produce similar low cost players.
Update: This player will be using a Sigma chipset, not the previously reported SigmaTel chipset.
