Dracula (1958) 4K Blu-ray

Warner Archive, in association with Hammer Films, is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Terence Fisher's Dracula (1958), starring Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Michael Gough, Melissa Stribling, and Carol Marsh. The releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 27.

One Night Only Collector's Edition 4K Blu-ray

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced that it will release on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray Will Gluck's romantic dramedy One Night Only (2026), starring Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner, Bobby Cannavale, Molly Ringwald, and LeVar Burton. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

Gwendoline Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray

Severin Films has dated and detailed its upcoming Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray release of Just Jaeckin's Gwendoline (1984), starring Tawny Kitaen, Brent Huff, Zabou Breitman, Bernadette Lafont, and Jean Rougerie. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on November 24.

This Week on Blu-ray: August 31-September 6

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

Scream Factory and Shout Factory Announce November Releases

Cirque Du Soleil: Corteo Delayed

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has revealed that the upcoming Blu-ray release of 'Cirque Du Soleil: Corteo' has been delayed three weeks, and will now hit store shelves on September 23rd. Special features and technical specs have still yet to be announced. More info on this release is expected soon.

L.A. Confidential Blu-ray Specs Revealed

Warner Home Video has announced the specs for the upcoming Blu-ray release of 'L.A. Confidential', due to hit store shelves on September 23rd, day-and-date with the DVD re-release. On this BD-25, video will be presented in 2.4:1 1080p VC-1 accompanied by a Dolby TrueHD soundtrack. Also included with the release will be a CD with seven songs from the movie's soundtrack.

Blow Announced for Blu-ray

New Line Home Entertainment in conjunction with Warner Home Video has announced that they will bring the Johnny Depp drama 'Blow' to Blu-ray on September 23rd. The film, which is based on the true life story of cocaine drug dealer George Jung, will be presented on a BD-25 via a 2.4:1 1080p VC-1 video encoding. No other technical specs have been announced at this time.

Turn Your HDTV into a High Def Aquarium

BCI has announced that they will bring their popular 'Marine Aquarium' series to Blu-ray on September 2nd. The series - which has sold over one million copies on DVD - comes in three parts: "Sunrise", "Mediterranean", and "Caribbean". The viewer can choose to watch each segment separately, or view the entire 114 minutes of 1080p footage in an unending loop.

Warner Reveals Blu-ray Pricing Strategy

Beginning in early September through sometime early next year, Warner Home Video will offer retailers certain catalog Blu-ray titles for $11 each after rebate. After retail mark-up, that should result in titles being a few dollars less than their current retail pricing. Under the program, retailers would purchase the discs at full price, but would be able to receive a cash rebate upon the sale of each unit.

Fox Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring the Hugh Jackman and Ewan McGreggor film 'Deception' to Blu-ray on September 23rd, day-and-date with the DVD release. Stored on a BD-50, video will be presented as 1080p AVC accompanied by a DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack.

Mongol Announced for Blu-ray Release

Universal Studios Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring epic-film 'Mongol' to Blu-ray on September 9th, day-and-date with the DVD release. Video will be presented in 1080p VC-1 and accompanied by a DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack. No suplemental features have been announced at this time.

Echo Bridge Announces More Budget Titles

Echo Bridge Home Entertainment has announced four more budget Blu-ray titles, all due to hit store shelves on September 30th. These titles include the holiday-themed titles 'Angel in the Family', 'A Christmas Visitor', and 'The Man Who Saved Christmas' as well as the not-so-holiday-themed 'The Salem Witch Trials.' All four titles will be released on BD-25s with 1080p video and Dolby Digital soundtrack.

Blu-ray.com Reviews First Universal Titles

In a little over two weeks, July 22nd to be exact, Universal Studios Home Entertainment will release their first three Blu-ray title: 'The Mummy: Deluxe Edition', 'The Mummy Returns: Deluxe Edition', and 'The Scorpion King'. Blu-ray.com reviewer Martin Liebman has just posted reviews of these titles, and the results are unanimous: Universal has done a magnificent job with their Blu-ray titles.

FUNimation Entertainment Moving Forward with Blu-ray

In a recent interview with Active Anime, FUNimation Entertainment's CEO Gen Fukunaga was asked if his company had seen success with Blu-ray. He responded, "Yes, we've seen success, and definitely to the point that we've already invested in authoring all of our Blu-ray titles in-house. We bought our own equipment over the last few months, hired people, and we are doing everything in house."

Halloween Remake Coming to Blu-ray

On his MySpace page, Rob Zombie revealed that his 2007 remake of the horror classic 'Halloween' will be released for Blu-ray on October 21st, day-and-date with a new DVD release. No technical features have been announced at this time, though the famed filmmaker/singer did reveal that it would be a 3-disc set and would include a new documentary on the making of the film called "Michael Lives" which clocks in at over four hours.

Today on Blu-ray - July 8th, 2008

After nearly two years of waiting, Warner Home Video has delivered one of their most anticipated "make-up" films to Blu-ray with today's release of 'Batman Begins'. Back in October of 2006 when the film was initially released in high definition on the now defunct HD DVD format, the Blu-ray release was "delayed" due to lack of BonusView functionality in the players. Now, with plenty of BonusView Blu-ray players on the market, Warner is releasing this gem to the masses.

CESI Opens First Blu-ray Testing Center in China

A member of the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA), CESI Technology Co. has had their facility designated as the first official Blu-ray Test Center in China. This new center will allow Chinese manufacturers to quickly and easily receive verification services for the official production of Blu-ray Disc Players. This resources is seen necessary to build the importance of Blu-ray in China.

DRA One Step Closer to Blu-ray

The Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) has announced that DigiRise Audio (DRA), a locally-developed Chinese audio codec, has passed an important technical evaluation, and is now on its way to being adopted into the format. The adoption, if it is approved, is seen as a major step towards Blu-ray becoming the high definition optical disc format for China.

A Christmas Story Gets Ultimate Collector's Edition Status

Warner Home Video has announced that they will release 'A Christmas Story: Ultimate Collector's Edition' for Blu-ray on November 4th, day-and-date with the DVD re-release. No specs have been announced for the release, but being that it is coming on a BD-25, you can expect 1080p VC-1 video and a Dolby Digital soundtrack.

More Elvis Coming to Blu-ray

A day after CMT premieres the new special, 'Elvis: Viva Las Vegas' will be available on Blu-ray exclusively at Wal-Mart and Sam's Club beginning August 12th. The release will include never-before-seen footage of Elvis Presley performing in Las Vegas, as well as interviews with those who knew the legendary singer best.

Pioneer to Release Blu-ray Recorders in Japan

Pioneer has announced that they will begin selling Blu-ray recorders in Japan before March 2009, and join Sony, Sharp, and Panasonic in the highly competitive arena. The company will use its close ties to Sharp to jointly develop Blu-ray recorders to be sold under the Pioneer name. Currently, there are no plans to bring the recorders to the US.

The Dark Knight Blu-ray to Feature IMAX Shifted Aspect Ratio

While speaking with iF Magazine, 'The Dark Knight' director Christopher Nolan mentioned that the inevitable of Blu-ray will feature the IMAX shifted aspect ratio. He commented, "The Blu-ray, in particular, will be able to actually use the shifted aspect ratios as it appears on the IMAX screen because the 16:9 aspect ratio is sufficiently different from the 2:4 that you'll actually see a shift on the Blu-ray."

Blu-ray Sales up Over 500% in UK

The British Video Association has revealed sales of Blu-ray discs are up 506% year to date in the United Kingdom, compared to the same period last year. This amounts to nearly one million units. Overall, Blu-ray represents 1.2% of the total market, which is, in total, up 3.3%, an increase led by the success of Blu-ray.

Fox Plans X Files for Blu-ray

On his blog, X Files producer Frank Spotnitz commented that he is currently working on extra features for the upcoming Blu-ray release (and DVD re-release) of 'The X Files Movie'. He commented that fans could expect "video and audio commentaries, behind-the-scenes footage, bloopers, trailers, a new documentary, and several other cool surprises."

Fox Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring the Cameron Diaz and Ashton Kutcher comedy 'What Happens in Vegas: Jackpot Extended Edition' to Blu-ray on August 26th, day-and-date with the DVD release. Pioneer Reveals 400GB Blu-ray Disc

Pioneer has revealed that they have developed a Blu-ray disc that can store 400GB of data on 16 layers. While these super Blu-ray discs are nothing new, Pioneer claims that the specs for the laser remain unchanged compared to that of a typical Blu-ray player, meaning these discs would technically work in existing Blu-ray players.

Pioneer to Supply HP BD-Combo Drives

According to sources in Taiwan, Pioneer has been selected to supply HP with Blu-ray Disc Combo drives beginning this month. Initially, PC manufacturers such as HP were leaning towards the cheaper BD-ROM drives, but with prices for the drives continually dropping - now around $110 - more and more companies are adopting the multifunction drives.

Beez Brings Blu-ray Anime to the UK

Beez Entertainment has announced that they will bring a limited edition release of 'FREEDOM Blu-ray Disc Box' to the UK on November 17th. The set will feature four BD-50s encoded with AVC 16:9 1080p video and 5.1 Dolby TrueHD audio. The release will feature both Japanese and English audio and subtitles.

Universal Blu-ray Titles in Hand

I got home a little early today due to the pending holiday weekend, and to my surprise and happiness, sitting at my front door was a package from Universal containing their first four Blu-ray titles. In my hands, and pictured after the jump, is 'The Mummy: Deluxe Edition', 'The Mummy Returns: Deluxe Edition', and 'The Scorpion King' all scheduled to be released July 22nd, as well as 'Doomsday' which is due a week later on July 29th.

Blu-ray: A Difference You Can Hear

Last night, I attended a digital presentation of 'WALL-E' at a local theater. It was the first time this year that I decided to pay the outrageous cost of seeing a movie in a theater instead of waiting for the Blu-ray release. This was not only because I have the utmost respect for Pixar and their ability to create amazing movies, but also because their new film was attempting to do something that Hollywood has feared doing ever since the invention of a prerecorded audio tracks - to just be quiet.

Universal Studios Home Entertainment has announced that they will release the George Clooney comedy 'Leatherheads' for Blu-ray on August 26th (not confirmed), day-and-date with the DVD release. No technical specs have been announced for the title at this time, but we do know that this title will feature BonusView UControl functionality.

Image Entertainment has announced that they are bringing the concert 'Korn: Live on the Other Side' to Blu-ray on October 7th. The concert, which was filmed at Hammerstein Ballroom with HD cameras, will be presented in 1.78:1 1080i video with a 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack for all 17 tracks.
