Sharp was in attendance at CEATEC 2008 with their own suite of new Blu-ray recorder / player / burners. Sharp follows a similar pattern set by other consumer electronics companies present at the show in introducing a wide range of products that feature a range of price points determined by the sizes of the internal hard drive included in the unit as well as the presence of Blu-ray burning capabilities.
Sharp's top of the line Blu-ray offering is the BD-HDW30. The player features one terabyte of storage along with Blu-ray burning capability. Next in line is the BD-HDW25. This unit features a VHS recording deck along with Blu-ray and an internal 500 GB hard drive. The BD-HDV22 is on the low end of this range and features 250 GB of internal storage. Rounding out the offerings is the BD-HD22. This player is the budget entry and features a 250 GB hard drive along with no burning capabilities. Sharp has clearly embraced Blu-ray and will aggressively push the technology with the rest of its new line of Aquos products being released over the next several months. Pricing was not immediately available, but should fall in line with the other manufacturers. As has been noted before, these new players / recorders / burners will not be operative for export as they rely on Japanese Hi-Vision broadcasts for content. External ATSC tuners would be required for operation in western countries.
