Dracula (1958) 4K Blu-ray

Warner Archive, in association with Hammer Films, is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Terence Fisher's Dracula (1958), starring Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Michael Gough, Melissa Stribling, and Carol Marsh. The releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 27.

One Night Only Collector's Edition 4K Blu-ray

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced that it will release on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray Will Gluck's romantic dramedy One Night Only (2026), starring Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner, Bobby Cannavale, Molly Ringwald, and LeVar Burton. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

Gwendoline Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray

Severin Films has dated and detailed its upcoming Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray release of Just Jaeckin's Gwendoline (1984), starring Tawny Kitaen, Brent Huff, Zabou Breitman, Bernadette Lafont, and Jean Rougerie. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on November 24.

This Week on Blu-ray: August 31-September 6

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

Spec Revealed for The Ultimate Matrix Collection

Warner Home Video has announced the technical specs and special features for the upcoming Blu-ray release of 'The Ultimate Matrix Collection', due to store shelves on October 14th. The seven-disc set (four of which are Blu-rays) will feature all three films in 1080p VC-1 accompanied by a 5.1 Dolby TrueHD soundtrack, and for the first time, the Animatrix in high definition.

Harry Potter is Back on Blu (Updated)

Warner Home Video has announced that they will release the 'Harry Potter Years 1-5 Giftset' to Blu-ray on November 11th, day-and-date with the DVD re-release. Last year, Warner released the 'Harry Potter Limited Edition Gift Set' in a collectible case, and this appears to be the "unlimited" version of that set.

Eastern Promises Coming to Blu-ray

Universal Studios Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring the Viggo Mortensen film 'Eastern Promises' to Blu-ray on October 14th. Video will be presented as 1080p AVC accompanied by 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack. The only extras are a pair of featurettes ("Secrets and Stories" and "Marked for Life")

Satellite Now Blu-ray Quality? Definitely not!

Dish Network announced this morning that they would soon be offering a total of 114 national HD channels, and to celebrate the announcement they would, starting tomorrow, offer the Will Smith film 'I am Legend' in 1080p as a pay-per-view offering. They went further to suggest that because it was 1080p, the presentation would be "same as Blu-ray(R) Disc quality". Of course, anyone with a Blu-ray player knows this definitely can't be true.

LG Unveils Blu-ray Player with Netflix Streaming

LG Electronics has announced that they will release their next Blu-ray player this fall with the ability to stream Netflix movies over a network connection. The player - LG BD300 - will be a BD-Live (Profile v2.0) player, allowing owners to not only watch BonusView material, but also, with an Internet connection, download extra content for Blu-ray titles.

Deltamax Sees Blu-ray Success

Deltamax, the film distribution arm of CMC Magnetics, has announced that they have released 120 Blu-ray movies in Taiwan, which have generated more that 25,000 units sold. The company expects this number quadruple in 2009 as lowering player prices continue to increase the number of Blu-ray owners in that country.

First Look Announces The Contract and More

First Look Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring the Morgan Freeman and John Cusack film 'The Contract' to Blu-ray on October 28th. Also revealed is that they will bring both the 2008 remake of 'Day of the Dead' and the 2004 Belgium film 'Immortal' to Blu-ray on December 2nd.

New Details for Texas Chain Saw Massacre Revealed

Dark Sky Films has revealed new information about their upcoming Blu-ray release of 'The Texas Chain Saw Massacre' which is due to hit store shelves on September 30th. Video specs have not been released, but audio will come in the form of 5.1 DTS or 2.0 PCM (it is unclear if the DTS will be Master Audio or not).

The Who Go Blu

Image Entertainment has announced that they will bring 'The Who: Killburn 1977' to Blu-ray on November 18th, day-and-date with the DVD release. Video will be presented in 1.78:1 1080p video accompanied by a DTS-HD Master Audio sountrack. Extras include the London Coliseum gig, as well as addition footage of other The Who favorites.

Sweeney Todd Gets Detailed

Dreamworks Home Entertainment in conjunction with Paramount Home Entertainment have announced the special features for the upcoming Blu-ray release of 'Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street', due to hit store shelves on October 21st, just in time for Halloween. Video will be presented in 1.85:1 1080p with a 5.1 Dolby TrueHD soundtrack.

BIG Acquires Warner Titles for India

BIG Home Entertainment has announced that they will soon begin distributing titles from expansive Warner Brothers film catalog in India, Sri Lanka,and Bangladesh. The company will have access to distribute titles from the entire Warner family, including sub-studios like HBO, Castle Rock, and New Line. They plan to distribute the titles on Blu-ray in addition to the normal VCD and DVD releases.

Planet of the Apes Officially Announced

Fox Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring 'Planet Of The Apes: 40 Year Evolution Blu-ray Collection' to Blu-ray on November 4th. The set, which features all five original 'Planet of the Apes' films, will feature BD-50s utilizing 2.35:1 1080p AVC accompanied by a 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack.

Kung Fu Panda Coming this Winter

Dreamworks Animation has revealed during a second quarter analyst call that they would release 'Kung Fu Panda' on Blu-ray this winter, but could not go into further details due to contractual obligations with Toshiba. Turns out that half of the second-quarter revenue generated by 'Kung Fu Panda', about $23M, was in the form of a direct contribution from Toshiba Corp in support of HD DVD.

If you listen very carefully you can hear the sound of hundreds of thousands of wallets screaming for mercy. The biggest studio offering today comes from Paramount who have decided to issues six highly anticipated "make-up" titles for Blu-ray - including the blockbuster hit 'Beowulf' - along with Martin Scorsese's Rolling Stones concert documentary 'Shine a Light'.

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced the special features for the upcoming Blu-ray releases of 'The 7th Voyage of Sinbad: 50th Anniversary Edition' and 'Ray Harryhausen Giftset', both due to hit store shelves on October 7th. The collection will feature new Blu-ray releases of 'It Came From Beneath The Sea' and 'Earth vs. The Flying Saucers' along with the previously released '20 Million Miles to Earth: 50th Anniversary Edition'.

Taxi Driver and Dr. Strangelove Coming to Blu-ray

In an early announcement to retailers, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has revealed that they will bring Stanley Kubrick classic 'Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb' to Blu-ray on December 9th. Also revealed, the studio plans to bring the Robert De Niro classic 'Taxi Driver' on February 3rd, 2009.

Warner Home Video in conjunction with New Line Home Entertainment have announced that they will bring the smash hit 'Sex and the City: The Movie' to Blu-ray as a special edition on September 23rd, day-and-date with the DVD release. The title will come on a BD-50 utilizing 1080p VC-1 video. No other technical specs or supplemental features have been announced at this time.

New Line Announces Mongol, Too

Warner Home Video in conjunction with New Line Home Entertainment have announced that they will bring 'Mongol' to Blu-ray on September 9th. Earlier this month, Universal Studios Home Entertainment also announced the Blu-ray release of Mongol for that some day. It appears there may have been some confusion at the studio level as to who was going to release this title.

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment Europe has announced that they will bring the Will Smith summer blockbuster hit 'Hancock' to Blu-ray on December 1st, day-and-date with the DVD release. No official announcement regarding the US date, but with a UK date in place, one would expect to see it hit US store shelves on Tuesday, December 2nd. -
Blue Underground Dates The Stendhal Syndrome

Blue Underground has revealed that they will bring 'The Stendhal Syndrome' to Blu-ray on November 18th. As earlier revealed, Blue Underground titles will come on BD-50s with 1080p video and lossless audio. No supplemental features have been announced at this time, but we expect to hear more soon.

Four More from Echo Bridge

Echo Bridge Home Home Entertainment has revealed that they will bring four films to Blu-ray this October. Coming first, on October 21st, is the Blu-ray release of 'The Woods Have Eyes'. A week later, on October 28th, they will release 'Cruel World', 'The Final Patient', and 'Mysterious Island' for Blu-ray.

More Superhero Animation Coming

Warner Home Video has revealed during the San Diego Comic Con that they will bring the direct-to-video animated film 'Superman: Doomsday' to Blu-ray on November 25th. The two-disc set will feature four bonus episodes of Superman the Animated Series hand-picked by Bruce Timm and 128 minutes worth of extra content.

Best Buy: Blu-ray is this Holiday Season's Hot Gift

In an interview with Home Media Magazine, Jill Hamburger, VP of Entertainment for Best Buy, stated that the retail store expects Blu-ray to be the hot item this holiday season. She commented, "This will be the first holiday season where we can talk to customers about Blu-ray without the distraction of a format war. We can focus on showcasing the picture, sound and features of the format, which we believe customers will be blown away by."

Heathers Announced for Blu-ray Release

During a panel at Comic Con, writer/director Daniel Waters revealed that his cult classic film 'Heathers' would be coming to Blu-ray this December. The film was recently re-released on DVD by Anchor Bay for its 20th Anniversary, and the Blu-ray is expected to mirror that release. Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring the 1958 film 'The 7th Voyage of Sinbad' to Blu-ray on October 7th, day-and-date with the DVD re-release. Video will be presented in 1.66:1 1080p AVC accompanied by a 5.1 Dolby TrueHD soundtrack. The only extras announced so far is an audio commentary track and the featurette "Remembering 7th Voyage of Sinbad".

Fox Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring 'Dr. Seuss' Horton Hears a Who!' to Blu-ray on December 9th, day-and-date with the DVD release. The film will come on a BD-25 utilizing 1080p AVC video and accompanied by a 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack. Also included with the release will be a digital copy of the film.
