Dracula (1958) 4K Blu-ray

Warner Archive, in association with Hammer Films, is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Terence Fisher's Dracula (1958), starring Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Michael Gough, Melissa Stribling, and Carol Marsh. The releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 27.

One Night Only Collector's Edition 4K Blu-ray

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced that it will release on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray Will Gluck's romantic dramedy One Night Only (2026), starring Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner, Bobby Cannavale, Molly Ringwald, and LeVar Burton. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

Gwendoline Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray

Severin Films has dated and detailed its upcoming Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray release of Just Jaeckin's Gwendoline (1984), starring Tawny Kitaen, Brent Huff, Zabou Breitman, Bernadette Lafont, and Jean Rougerie. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on November 24.

This Week on Blu-ray: August 31-September 6

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

The Shawshank Redemption Delayed... Again

Warner Home Video has revealed that the upcoming Blu-ray release of 'The Shawshank Redemption' has been delayed from its November 4th release date by a month, and will now hit store shelves on December 2nd. Technical specs and special features have still yet to be announced, but we do know it will be a Digibook release featuring a BD-50.

Hell Ride Coming to Blu-ray

The Weinstein Company has announced that they will release 'Hell Ride' to Blu-ray on October 28th, day-and-date with the DVD release, under the Dimension Extreme label. The film, which was produced by Quentin Tarantino, will come on a BD-50 and feature 1080p video accompanied by a Dolby TrueHD soundtrack.

Transformers Makes Huge Comeback Due to Blu-ray Sales

According to Nielsen VideoScan First Alert data, last week's release of 'Transformers' was the third best selling title (Blu-ray and DVD) of the week. The resurgence in sales of this catalog title was mostly due to the Blu-ray release, which made up 2/3rd of all sales of that title. On the Blu-ray-only chart, 'Transformers' crushed the competition, with 'The Nightmare Before Christmas' coming in a distant second.

Sony Cancels Chick-Flick Blu-ray Releases

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has canceled the upcoming Blu-ray releases of 'Maid in Manhattan', 'Mona Lisa Smile', and 'My Best Friend's Wedding', which were due to hit store shelves on September 30th. The Blu-ray release of 'Can't Hardly Wait' which was announced at the same time will be released on schedule. No reason was given for the delay at this time.

Open Season 2 Coming Directly to Blu-ray

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has revealed that they will bring the direct-to-video sequel 'Open Season 2' to Blu-ray on January 27th, day-and-date with the DVD release. No technical specs or special features have been announced at this time, but you can expect the typical Sony Blu-ray treatment of 1080p AVC and Dolby TrueHD experience for this CGI-feature.

Atmospheres Slips to 2009

National Geographic in conjunction with Warner Home Video have revealed that the upcoming Blu-ray release of 'Atmospheres: Earth, Air, and Water' has been postponed from its October 21st release date to January 6th of next year. No other specs have changed, and no reason was given for the delay.

Diary of the Dead Coming to Blu-ray

In an early announcement to retailers, The Weinstein Company has revealed that they will bring the latest George A. Romero film 'Diary of the Dead' to Blu-ray on October 21st. As this is an unofficial announcement, no additional details regarding technical specs or special features are available at this time.

More Bandai Anime Coming Soon to Blu-ray

According to our friend Chris Beveridge at AnimeOnBlu-ray, Bandai Visual Entertainment has revealed that they will release four new animé titles this November through their Honneamise label. The first title, slated for November 11th, is the four-disc 1080p AVC 'Freedom Box Set' that comes with English, Japanese and French audio.

As a filmmaker, Quentin Tarantino has a following similar to that of a presidential nominee. Half of those who see his films praise his ability to seamlessly integrate over-the-top action sequences with stylized dialog in order to tell a compelling story. The other half see his efforts as a vacuum of originality that is simply a conglomerate of styles borrowed from classic films. But as Ben Williams points out in his review, "Whatever your opinion of Tarantino might be, it's hard to argue with the pure entertainment value that he brings to cinemas." Plus, anyone who can make John Travolta look cool is a genius in my book.

Warner Japan Announces An American In Paris

Warner Home Video Japan has announced that they will release 'An American in Paris' for Blu-ray on November 5th. Last word from the studio was that the title (which was recently remastered for a DVD release next week) would be released in early 2009 on Blu-ray. It appears that at least in Japan, that is not the case and high definition fans will be able to get a hold of this region-free title in a few short months.

Sony Announces Five Catalog Titles for November

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring five catalog titles to Blu-ray on November 18th. All five films - 'Blue Streak', 'National Security', 'Mirrormask', 'Southland Tales', and 'Revolver' - will feature 1080p AVC video accompanied by Dolby TrueHD soundtracks, similar to other Sony releases.

Oppo Blu-ray Player Spotted at CEDIA

The folks over at AVSForum have spotted the Oppo BDP S83 Blu-ray Disc player, the first such player from the now famous DVD Player manufacturer. Well known for their line of upscaling DVD players, the company spent much of the format war pushing their players as a "alternative" to a high definition player.

Cambridge Audio Announces Blu-ray Player

Cambridge Audio, a manufacturer of high-end audio components, has announced that they will release a yet to be named Blu-ray Disc player in February or March of next year. It will be BD-Live compatible, and support decoding of all audio formats except DTS-HD Master Audio, which it will be able to bitstream to a compatible receiver.

8-Mile; Jarhead; The Kingdom Scheduled for November

Universal Studios Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring the Eminem film '8-Mile' to Blu-ray on November 18th. A week later, on November 25th, they will bring the Jake Gyllenhaal film 'Jarhead' and the Jamie Foxx film 'The Kingdom' to Blu-ray. All three will also be available as a 'Action/Thriller Bundle' that same day.

k.d. lang Concert Coming to Blu-ray

Image Entertainment has announced they have recently acquired rights to distribute 'k.d. lang: Live in London', and will release it for Blu-ray on February 3rd, day-and-date with the DVD release. No technical specs for this release have been announced at this time, but we expect to learn more as the we get closer to the release date.

An American Girl Comes to Blu-ray

New Line Home Entertainment in conjunction with Warner Home Video have announced that they will bring 'Kit Kittredge: An American Girl' to Blu-ray on October 28th, day-and-date with the DVD release. The film stars Abigail Breslin in the first major motion picture about the popular doll. Coming on a BD-50, video will be presented as 1080p VC-1 with a Dolby Digital soundtrack.

Sony Talks 400-Disc Blu-ray Changer and Blu-ray Club

At the beginning of CEDIA today in Denver, CO, Sony spoke mostly about the great success they have seen with the Blu-ray format, but also took some time to talk about what's next for the company. After discussing details about their upcoming Blu-ray players, Sony mentioned that next year they would introduce a 400-disc Blu-ray Disc changer, news that should delight those with huge Blu-ray collections.

Sharp and LG Detail Upcoming Players

Sharp has announced some specs for their two second-generation Blu-ray players - the Sharp BD-HP21 and BD-HP50. Both players are BonusView compatible and support 24p Deep Color output. Additionally, both players support decoding of Dolby TrueHD soundtracks (no support for DTS-HD Master Audio was announced at this time).

Details Emerge for Upcoming Police Blu-ray

On November 11th, the legendary band The Police will release 'The Police: Certifiable' for Blu-ray. The three-disc set will feature the 109-minute concert in 1080 high definition accompanied by a Dolby TrueHD soundtrack in both surround and stereo. Additionally, the set will include the featurette "Better Than Therapy" and a photo gallery, both in high definition.

Sources: Sub-$200 Blu-ray Players Coming this Winter

Sources have indicated to Blu-ray.com that at least one company will offer a limited number of Blu-ray Disc players for under $200 this holiday season. These players would likely be offered during special "door buster" sales, like those commonly seen on the Friday after Thanksgiving - a day which retailers commonly refer to as "Black Friday".

Warner Announces Bam Margera Christmas Special

Warner Home Video has announced that they will bring 'Bam Margera Presents: Where The #$&% Is Santa?' to Blu-ray on December 2nd, day-and-date with the DVD release. No technical specs have been announced at this time, but we do know that it will include 25 minutes of additional scenes, a photo gallery, and a trailer as the extras features.

Sony Announces Six Blu-ray Recorders for Japan

Sony Electronics Japan has announced that they will release six Blu-ray Disc recorders to the Japanese market this winter. The recorders vary is hard drive size and number of tuners (the premium BDZ-X100 supports dual tuners and 1TB of storage), but all will be fully BD-Live capable. Additionally, all will contain the Super Bit Mapping and HD Reality Enchancer chips that were previously announced for inclusion in the upcoming BDP-S5000ES.

Denon Announces Lower Cost Blu-ray Player

Denon Electronics has announced that they will begin shipping a lower-cost Blu-ray Disc player to stores in October. The player, the Denon DVD-1800BD, will be a BonusView (Profile v1.1) player and is expected to retail for $749. A full list of features has yet to be announced, but it was revealed that the player will support only bitstreaming of Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio soundtracks.

Spanish site ZonaDVD is reporting as an official announcement that Warner Home Video has communicated to them that Chris Nolan's 'The Dark Knight' will be released on Blu-ray on December 16 of this year alongside standard and deluxe editions on DVD.

As a film, 'Transformers' was one of the highest grossing films of 2007, representing a departure from the standard superhero summer blockbusters that now seem to be permanently embossed on the silver screen. As a home video release, however, it will always represent a title that was unwillingly used to divide fans in a heated format war. But today, the troubled past of 'Transformers' can be wiped way, as the the title finally sees its Blu-ray release.

I Am Legend UCE Dated for December (Updated)

Warner Home Video has revealed that the upcoming Blu-ray release of 'I Am Legend: Ultimate Collector's Edition' will be released on December 9th, day-and-date with the DVD re-release. The two disc set will feature both the theatrical and alternate versions of the film, as well as 23 making-of featurettes, 12 deleted scenes, "Cautionary Tale", and the animated comics.

TVA Films Brings Blu-ray to Canada

TVA Films has announced their first two Blu-ray titles which are hitting Canadian store shelves today. The titles - 'C.R.A.Z.Y.' and 'Le Fabuloux Destin d'Amélie Poulain' - both come on BD-25s with 1080i AVC video accompanied by 5.1 French Dolby TrueHD soundtracks. Unfortunately, while there are English subtitles on 'C.R.A.Z.Y.', there are none for 'Amelie'.
