Sigma Designs revealed their "
Blu-ray 8644" Blu-ray player reference design at the BDA seminar in Shenzhen, China this week. It is a complete, turn-key hardware and software solution, meaning that it allows manufacturer to quickly go into production. All the work has been done ahead of time, so if the manufacturer chooses, they can go straight to production of their very own Blu-ray disc player.
The design uses the
SMP8644 chip, which not only provides decoding for all Blu-ray video and audio formats and BD-Live capability, but is also the fastest standalone chip on the market, with speeds that rival the PS3. Video processing gets a boost with 12-bit xvYCC support, while audio is supported at 7.1 channels.
A higher end version will be shown at CES 2009 using Sigma's
GF9452 VXP chip. VXP technology is currently breaking into the Blu-ray market, but is highly regarded in the projector and AV Receiver arenas.
