As a depressed drunk who lives in a trailer home, '
Hancock' is not your typical superhero. Sure, he will play the role and help people, but only when its convenient. Will Smith's character only begins to understand his own importance when he is helped by Ray Embrey (Jason Bateman) to clean up his image and show him a side of life that he never knew existed.
The overall theme of 'Hancock' is not a new idea - many superheros have been rejected by the people they help - but it is interesting to see such a theme without first building a strong back story. For as deep as the film could have gone, the results are extremely shallow, leaving much to be desired. On a technical standpoint, the release is very well done. While the style may both some, I thought it played well with the movie, and the sound was magnificent. The Blu-ray release is out today.
Universal digs into their HD DVD pockets once again to deliver two great releases with '
Jarhead' and '
The Kingdom'. Many compare 'Jarhead' with 'Full Metal Jacket' because they both show the a part of the military that is rarely seen, but "Jacket" feels much like two separate movies, whereas 'Jarhead' was much more successful in keeping a single theme. Plus, Jake Gyllenhaal's performance is outstanding. 'The Kingdom' was almost as successful at the box office, making the
two pack an easy pick up for war film fans.
MPI Entertainment today releases '
George Carlin: It's Bad For Ya', the final HBO special from the late comedian. He was truly an innovator of his field, and there will never be anyone like Carlin.
