Dracula (1958) 4K Blu-ray

Warner Archive, in association with Hammer Films, is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Terence Fisher's Dracula (1958), starring Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Michael Gough, Melissa Stribling, and Carol Marsh. The releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 27.

One Night Only Collector's Edition 4K Blu-ray

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced that it will release on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray Will Gluck's romantic dramedy One Night Only (2026), starring Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner, Bobby Cannavale, Molly Ringwald, and LeVar Burton. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

Gwendoline Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray

Severin Films has dated and detailed its upcoming Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray release of Just Jaeckin's Gwendoline (1984), starring Tawny Kitaen, Brent Huff, Zabou Breitman, Bernadette Lafont, and Jean Rougerie. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on November 24.

This Week on Blu-ray: August 31-September 6

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

Female Agents Announced for Blu-ray in UK

Revolver Entertainment has announced that they will bring the Jean-Paul Salome film 'Female Agents' to Blu-ray on October 13th. This World War II based drama will feature 1080p video accompanied by a 5.1 Dolby Digital soundtrack. The only extra will be a "Making of Female Agents" featurette.

Dale Earnhardt Story Coming to Blu-ray

In an early announcement to retailers, ESPN has revealed that they will bring '3: The Dale Earnhardt Story' in its collector's edition form to Blu-ray on November 11th. This Golden Globe and Emmy-nominated made-for-TV movie documents the life of one of the most influential racers in NASCAR history. As this is an unofficial announcement, no technical specs or special features have been announced at this time.

Sara Bareilles Concert for Blu

Sony Music has announced that they will bring 'Between the Lines: Sara Bareilles Live at the Filmore' to Blu-ray on October 28th, day-and-date with the DVD release. Video, which was captured entirely with high definition cameras, will be presented in 1080p AVC. No word on what type of soundtrack or possible extras have been announced at this time.

Red Desert Announced for Blu-ray

British Film Institute (BFI) has announced that they will release Michelangelo Antonioni's 'Red Desert' (Il deserto rosso) for Blu-ray on October 20th in the UK. Coming on a BD-25, this Golden Lion Award-winner (Venice Film Festival) will be presented in 1.85:1 1080p accompanied by a PCM mono soundtrack.

Luc Besson Classics Coming to Blu-ray

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment have announced that they will bring the Luc Besson films 'Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc' and 'La Femme Nikita' to Blu-ray on December 2nd. 'Joan of Arc' will be presented in 2.40:1 1080p AVC while 'Nikita' will be presented in 2.35:1 1080p AVC, both with 5.1 TrueHD soundtracks in their original languages.

In an early announcement to retailers, Shout Factory has revealed that they will bring the '2008 World Series' to Blu-ray on December 16th. The upcoming championship game, for which the opponents have yet to be determined, will take place on October 22nd. Panasonic Lowers Blu-ray Player Prices

Following a move made by Sony a few months ago, Panasonic has announced that they have lowered the price of their DMP-BD35 Blu-ray Disc player to $399 (its predecessor, the DMP-BD30 launched at $499). Additionally, the upcoming DMP-BD55 will launch at $499, $200 less than its predecessor, the DMP-BD50.

Sin City Coming to Japan

Geneon has announced that they will bring 'Sin City' to Blu-ray on December 5th. As Geneon owns distribution rights for this film only in Japan, don't expect it to be released in any other country at this time. No technical specs or special features have been announced at this time, but as a Region A title, it is an easy import for anyone in North America.

The PlanetaHD site from Spain is reporting the first detailed information about the audio and supplements to be included on The Dark Knight Blu-ray Disc. The highly expected title will have a 5.1 Dolby TrueHD soundtrack and will be issued in a two-disc edition.

Fox Home Entertainment has announced the technical specs and special features for the upcoming Blu-ray releases of 'Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story' and 'Super Troopers', both due to hit store shelves on December 9th. Both titles will come on BD-25s with DTS-HD Master Audio soundtracks, 'Dodgeball' with 2.35:1 1080p AVC video, and 'Super Troopers' with 1.85:1 1080p AVC.

And Still More Dragon Ball Z Coming to Blu-ray

In a continuation of their current practices, FUNimation has announced another Dragon Ball Z double feature for Blu-ray release. 'Dragon Ball Z: Return of the Cooler/Cooler's Revenge' will be released on November 11th with 1080p and a Dolby TrueHD soundtrack. Extras for this release have yet to be announced at this time.

Fox Reveals Individual Apes Films; Super Troopers

In an early announcement to retailers, Fox Home Entertainment has revealed that they will, in addition to the previously announced 'Planet Of The Apes: 40 Year Evolution Blu-ray Collection', release all the "Planet of the Apes" films individually with the same November 4th release date. As this is an unofficial announcement, we can only assume at this time that the discs will be identical to those found in the set.

Memorex Announces Blu-ray Player

Memorex has announced that they will release their first Blu-ray Disc player this November. The player - the Memorex MVBD-2510 - will be BonusView compatible and feature decoding of Dolby TrueHD and bit streaming of DTS-HD Master Audio. The HDMI connection supports 1080p video at both 24p and 60p framerates, along with 7.1 channels of audio support.

Journey to the Center of the Earth Gets 3D Blu-ray Treatment

New Line Home Entertainment in conjunction with Warner Home Video has announced that they will bring the Brendan Frasier film 'Journey to the Center of the Earth' to Blu-ray on October 28th, day-and-date with the DVD release. The BD-25 will feature - at least initially - both the 3D and 2D versions of the film along with four sets of 3D glasses. The press material indicates that after the initial shipment sells out, all future discs will feature only the 2D version.

More 3D Content Coming to Blu-ray

TDVision has announced that they will release 15 3D films on Blu-ray beginning later this years. The films, which are encoded using the companies TDVCodec, will work on both 3D-ready and standard HDTVs, giving the user the flexibility to view the material on either display. The first films will feature content from the Chinese studio MagicPlay.

Technicolor Adds European Blu-ray Production Lines

Thomson's Technicolor Services Division has launch four Blu-ray production lines in their Warsaw, Poland facility. Even though these represent the company's first Blu-ray production lines in Europe, they are now the second largest producer of Blu-ray discs on the continent. The plant is currently set up to handle both BD-25 and BD-50 discs.

Fox Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring the Uwe Boll film 'In the Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale' to Blu-ray on December 16th, day-and-date with the DVD release. The film will come in its unrated form on a BD-50 featuring 2.35:1 1080p AVC accompanied by a 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack.

The biggest releases this week actually come for one of the smallest major studios. After a nasty divorce with Disney, Harvey and Bob Weinstein left the Miramax name behind and formed The Weinstein Company. While their film library may be small - they only retained the Dimension Films catalog - the list of new releases is ever growing, and today we see two of those titles being released for Blu-ray.

Olevia Blu-ray Player Coming in October

Initially announced earlier this year, Syntax Brillian has revealed that they will release their first Blu-ray Disc player - the Olevia BD-100 - this October. If specs remain unchanged from the original announcement, this player is based on the Sharp BD-HP20 (or possible now the BD-HP21) and will be featured at discount stores such as Target.

The film, which starts Winona Ryder and Christian Slater, will come as either a single Blu-ray release in 'Heathers: 20th High School Reunion Edition' or the Blu-ray coupled with the DVD release in 'Heathers: Limited Edition Locker Set'.
