Dracula (1958) 4K Blu-ray

Warner Archive, in association with Hammer Films, is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Terence Fisher's Dracula (1958), starring Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Michael Gough, Melissa Stribling, and Carol Marsh. The releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 27.

One Night Only Collector's Edition 4K Blu-ray

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced that it will release on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray Will Gluck's romantic dramedy One Night Only (2026), starring Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner, Bobby Cannavale, Molly Ringwald, and LeVar Burton. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

Gwendoline Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray

Severin Films has dated and detailed its upcoming Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray release of Just Jaeckin's Gwendoline (1984), starring Tawny Kitaen, Brent Huff, Zabou Breitman, Bernadette Lafont, and Jean Rougerie. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on November 24.

This Week on Blu-ray: August 31-September 6

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

UK Gets Hellboy 2

Universal Studios Home Entertainment UK has announced that they will bring 'Hellboy II: The Golden Army' to Blu-ray on December 8th, day-and-date with the DVD release. This comic book inspired film will get a two-disc set treatment featuring 1080p video accompanied by a 7.1 DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack.

Tropic Thunder Announced for the UK

Paramount Home Entertainment UK has announced that they will bring the Ben Stiller and Jack Black summer comedy hit 'Tropic Thunder' to the UK on January 26th, day-and-date with the DVD release. This two-disc set will feature the director's cut of the film presented in 1080p video accompanied by a 5.1Dolby TrueHD soundtrack.

New Line Home Entertainment in conjunction with Warner Home Video has announced that they will bring the Meg Ryan and Bette Midler film 'The Women' to Blu-ray on December 24th, day-and-date with the DVD release. No technical specs have been announced at this time, but you can expect the typical 1080p VC-1 treatment from Warner.

U-Tech Receives Orders From Hollywood

U-Tech Media, a Taiwan-based manufacturer of pre-recorded Blu-ray media, has received several "urgent" orders from major Hollywood studios, according to industry sources. Sony DADC and Cinram combined represent 80% of total Blu-ray Disc movie production, but with Blu-ray Disc player prices continuing to drop, they are unable to fulfill demand and studios are forced to use smaller manufacturers such as U-Tech.

The Exorcist Coming Next Fall

In an interview with DVD Review, director William Friedkin mentioned that, not only does he love Blu-ray, but he is also scheduled to begin work on a 'The Exorcist' Blu-ray on December 2nd. No extras were discussed, but with so much great material available for the legendary horror film, we can only imagine the possibilities. The release is currently scheduled for a Fall 2009.

Amadeus; A History of Violence for February

Warner Home Video has announced that they will bring the Oscar-award winning/nominated films 'Amadeus: Director's Cut' and 'A History of Violence' to Blu-ray on February 10th. Both films will be presented in 1080p VC-1 video accompanied by 5.1 Dolby TrueHD soundtracks. Additionally, 'Amadeus' will come with a digital copy of the film as well as an 8-track CD sampler.

Warner Brings Any Given Sunday to Blu-ray (UPDATED)

Warner Home Video has announced that they will bring the Oliver Stone football film 'Any Given Sunday: Director's Cut' to Blu-ray on January 27th. Starring Al Pacino, Cameron Diaz, and Jamie Foxx, this film will be presented in 1080p VC-1 video. Technical specs for the audio soundtrack have not been revealed at this time.

Wedding Crashers Announced for Blu-ray

Warner Home Video has announced that they will bring the Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn comedy 'Wedding Crashers' to Blu-ray on December 30th. The release will feature both the theatrical and "uncorked" versions of the film. No technical specs have been announced at this time, though you can expect to the typical 1080p VC-1 release from Warner.

Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring 'Pinocchio: 70th Anniversary Platinum Edition' to Blu-ray on March 10th, day-and-date with the DVD re-release. Video will be presented in 1080p AVC accompanied by a 7.1 DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack. This two-disc Blu-ray set will also feature a bonus DVD of the film, similar to the recent 'Sleeping Beauty' Blu-ray release, for those who want a standard definition copy for the bedroom or car.

Blu-ray Sales to Double this Year

According to Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, sales of Blu-ray Disc movies are on pace to double this year, reaching a revenue of $1 Billion. While DVD sales are suffering from the recent economic struggles, Blu-ray sales are outpacing most other consumer electronics products. Equally impressive is that the percentage of Blu-ray sales compared to DVD sales is also increasing.

Most of us found it weird when HBO announced 'Generation Kill' for a DVD release, but no Blu-ray release despite playing on HBO's HD channel. Well, you'll be happy to hear that HBO Home Entertainment in conjunction with Warner Home Video have announced that they will bring 'Generation Kill' to Blu-ray on December 15th, day-and-date with the DVD release.

UK Blu-ray Sales Booming

Research funded by the British Video Association (BVA) shows that, despite the recent global financial fiasco, uncontrollable unemployment, and rising bills, Blu-ray sales are better than ever. Year-to-date, sales of Blu-ray movies in the UK are up 396% and is just short of 1.5M units sold. Obviously, this is still very short of US sales, but it is a vast improvement from last years sales data.

Calling it "the finest video disc I have ever viewed or ever imagined," the famous critic concluded that "Baraka by itself is sufficient reason to acquire a Blu-ray player."
