Despite concerns of corporate health, Sony has moved ahead with Blu-ray plans and have opened a Blu-ray Disc production facility in Shanghai, China. This, the fourth such Sony owned Blu-ray production facility in the world, is operating in a 130,000 square foot facility, employing 200 full time workers, and capable of outputting 500,000 discs per month.
The factory is a joint venture with China-based Shanghai Media Group, which originally joined with Sony seven years ago for DVDs. The factory has already received orders for more Sony Pictures Blu-ray releases (who were the first to release Blu-ray titles in China) as well as Guangdong Zoke Culture Development Co., one of the largest distributors of Chinese films in the country.
A fifth Sony Blu-ray Disc production facility is expected to open later this year in New Jersey.
