Dracula (1958) 4K Blu-ray

Warner Archive, in association with Hammer Films, is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Terence Fisher's Dracula (1958), starring Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Michael Gough, Melissa Stribling, and Carol Marsh. The releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 27.

One Night Only Collector's Edition 4K Blu-ray

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced that it will release on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray Will Gluck's romantic dramedy One Night Only (2026), starring Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner, Bobby Cannavale, Molly Ringwald, and LeVar Burton. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

Gwendoline Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray

Severin Films has dated and detailed its upcoming Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray release of Just Jaeckin's Gwendoline (1984), starring Tawny Kitaen, Brent Huff, Zabou Breitman, Bernadette Lafont, and Jean Rougerie. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on November 24.

This Week on Blu-ray: August 31-September 6

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

Lionsgate Announces Battle for Terra Blu-ray

Lionsgate Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring the animated film 'Battle for Terra' on Blu-ray on September 22nd, day-and-date with the DVD release. Featuring the voices of Luke Wilson, Evan Rachel Wood, Dennis Quaid, Danny Glover and James Garner, this sci-fi film will be presented in 1080p AVC accompanied by a DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack.

Michael Jackson's Final Rehearsal Rumored for Blu-ray

When Michael Jackson died last week, he was rehearsing for a final series of live concerts in London. Those gigs will obviously never happen, but Jackson's last rehearsal, recorded in multi-camera, high-definition video, could be released on Blu-ray, according to concert promoters cited by the British newspaper The Independent.

Santa Buddies Gets Detailed

Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment has announced the technical specs and a name change for the upcoming Blu-ray release of 'Santa Buddies: The Legend of Santa Paws', which is due to hit store shelves on November 24th, day-and-date with the DVD release. Coming in Disney's Blu-ray Combo Pack form with accompanying DVD, video will be presented in 1080p AVC with a 5.1 Dolby Digital soundtrack.

Sony Brings Two Westerns to Blu-ray This Fall

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring 'Silverado' and 'The Quick and the Dead' to Blu-ray on September 8th. 'Silverado' will come with a booklet, presumably in the digibook format. For both releases video will be presented in 1080p AVC accompanied by 5.1 Dolby TrueHD soundtracks.

Classic Christmas Carol Gets Blu-ray

In an early announcement to retailers, it has been revealed that VCI will enter the Blu-ray arena with the release of the movie 'A Christmas Carol' (also known as 'Scrooge') on November 3. No information on audio/video specifications or special features is available, other than a DVD copy of the film will also be included.

Scooby Doo Live-Action Prequel BD for September

Warner Home Video has announced that it will release the direct-to-video movie 'Scooby Doo! The Mystery Begins' on Blu-ray on September 22, day-and-date with the DVD. This will be a two-disc edition where the second disc holds the DVD and a digital copy of the movie. Video will be 1.78:1 VC-1, accompanied by a 5.1 Dolby TrueHD track.

El Superbeasto Coming to Blu-ray

Anchor Bay Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring the direct-to-video animated feature 'The Haunted World of el Superbeasto' to Blu-ray on September 22nd, day-and-date with the DVD release. The feature is based on Rob Zombie's comic book of the same name, and should be considered as for adult audiences only.

Zack Snyder Talks Blu-ray

When beginning work on the upcoming Blu-ray release for his latest film 'Watchmen', he was surprised how far the format had evolved since the release of his film '300'.

BDA Disputes Harris Poll

Citing recent data from Adams Media Research, the Blu-ray Disc Association is disputing the results of a recent Harris Poll which indicated that more consumers own HD DVD players (11%) than Blu-ray Disc Players (7%). Sales data provided by the research company shows the number closer to an 8% share for Blu-ray compared to less than 1% for HD DVD.

Mysteries of Pittsburgh, Valentino Docu on BD from Phase 4

Phase 4 Films has added two titles to its Blu-ray slate. The indie movie 'The Mysteries of Pittsburgh' is announced for August 4, whereas the documentary 'Valentino: The Last Emperor' is scheduled for September 15. There is no information on audio or video specifications, or special features at this time.

BD Sales Information: June 15-21 (Update)

'Gran Torino' continued to be the top-selling title on Blu-ray for the week ended June 14, according to Nielsen VideoScan First Alert, closely followed by the 2009 remake of 'Friday the 13th', in its first week on store shelves. In third place, and not far behind, was a catalog title: 'Ghostbusters'. Update: overall sales figures added.

Ocean's Trilogy in Amazon Gold Box Today

Amazon's Gold Box deal-of-the-day is a special offer on 'Ocean's Trilogy' (Ocean's Eleven, Twelve & Thirteen Gift Set), which today can be bought on Blu-ray for only $36.99, or just over $12 each title. This was a runner-up in the vote Amazon held to decide which titles to offer during its High-def week.

BD Revenues at Image Entertainment Skyrocket

Image Entertainment has reported financial results for its fiscal fourth quarter and year ended March 31, 2009. The figures show a sharp upturn in net revenues from Blu-ray: in the financial fourth quarter (i.e., January-March 2009), they were $1.3 million, up 440% from the $222,000 for the same period in 2008.

The Exorcist, Logan's Run Rumored for BD in 2009

Our friends at The Digital Bits, always in the hunt for juicy Blu-ray scoops, now have word that Warner Home Video plans to release 'Logan's Run' and 'The Exorcist: The Version You've Never Seen' in 2009, as well as the already mentioned 'Heat'. As already reported, Paramount is preparing 'It's a Wonderful Life' for this year and 'Chinatown' for 2010.

BBC Brings Yellowstone to Blu-ray

BBC Home Entertainment in conjunction with Warner Home Video have announced that they will bring the latest BBC Natural History production 'Yellowstone: Battle for Life' to Blu-ray on September 29th, day-and-date with the DVD release. The release will feature all three one-hour episodes of the series in high definition, which represents nearly a full year at the famous national park.

Pioneer and Sharp Make Joint Venture Official

Sharp and Pioneer have officially announced that their optical disc joint venture - Pioneer Digital Design and Manufacturing Corporation - will launch on October 1st of this year. As we previously reported, Sharp and Pioneer agreed to merge their optical disc business as part of Pioneer's restructuring plan.

Philips Announces Blu-ray Soundbar

In Singapore today, Philips unveiled its home-entertainment lineup for 2009. Philips is expanding its range of Soundbars (compact one-piece home theater systems that consist of a tuner, a disc player and speakers), including the company's first such device with Blu-ray playback: the HTS8160B.

Watchmen Comic-Con BD-Live Community Screening Announced

Comic-Con 2009 opens on July 23, and 'Watchmen' director Zack Snyder has announced "something special" for the fans. On July 25, there will be a "Live Community Screening" of the film at the convention, which will be relayed via BD-Live, so owners of the Blu-ray (which comes out on July 21) can watch the film along with Snyder and talk about the film.

Michael Bay Talks Transformers 2 Blu-ray

Michael Bay has already intimated some details about the Blu-ray edition of 'Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen'. It's going to have "lots of stuff" and is being produced by "Ridley Scott's DVD guy" – in other words, the extraordinary Charlie de Lauzirika. Bay also confirmed that the BD version will have variable aspect ratio for the scenes shot in IMAX, like 'The Dark Knight' did.

ESCA: Blu-ray is the Future

At the Entertainment Supply Chain Academy Conference yesterday, many industry representatives openly commented on the current state of Blu-ray, almost unilaterally agreeing that Blu-ray is still the future of home entertainment. Recent analysis has shown that Blu-ray sales are already up 212% this year, and the outlook is favorable to reaching 500M units by 2013.

20th Century Fox Home Entertainment has announced the Blu-ray release of 'X-Men Origins: Wolverine' for October 19, day-and-date with the DVD. Audio and video specifications are not determined, but you can expect a 2.39:1 1080p AVC video encode accompanied by a DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack from the studio.

Toshiba President Hints at Supporting Blu-ray

At the annual shareholder meeting of Toshiba Corporation today, outgoing president Atsutoshi Nishida did not rule out the possibility of selling Blu-ray products. In a new pragmatic vein, Nishida said: "It makes no sense to decide not to enter the Blu-Ray market simply because we lost the DVD-format war. We cannot change the fact that we lost, but we would like to keep our options open."

U-Tech Media Lands BD Movie Orders from Drive Makers

Taiwan-based replicator U-Tech Media has received orders for Blu-ray movie discs from two of the world's top three ODM/OEM optical disc drive makers: Hitachi-LG Data Storage (HLDS) and Toshiba-Samsung Storage Technology (TSST). HLDS and TSST plan to offer free BD movie discs with their BD drives and players to promote sales.

Vizio Blu-ray Player Coming Exclusively to Walmart

During a press conference today, John Schindler, New Product Development Vice President for Vizio, commented on the company's upcoming Blu-ray Disc player, the VBR100. The player will be available in late July, exclusively at Walmart, for the suggested retail price of $188. It will be BD-Live capable with the addition of a USB thumb drive.

Onkyo Announces DV-BD507 Blu-ray Player for Europe

Onkyo has announced a new Blu-ray player for the European market: the DV-BD507. Specifications are similar to other recent models. It is BD-Live compatible, supports 1080/24p and 1080p upscaling and decodes Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio. It also supports AVCHD and DivX-HD playback. It will be available in July, for a price still unconfirmed.

Keane Live BD Announced for US Release

Universal Music Enterprises has announced that they will bring the concert film 'Keane Live' to Blu-ray on July 14th, day-and-date with the DVD release. Technical specs have not been announced at this time, though previous releases from the studio have been presented in 1080p AVC accompanied by PCM soundtracks.
