For the most part, August has been quiet in terms of must-have Blu-ray
releases. In this last week of August, that trend continues, but looking
over the horizon we see the release of several blockbuster titles, including
next week's release of '
Braveheart' and '
Gladiator'. Combine that with the release of
PlayStation 3 Slim at the new $299 price point, and its
going to be a month to
remember for Blu-ray. With that said, we still have a few titles coming out
today that are worth a look.
While its popularity in the US is mediocre at best, soccer is a top sport
pretty much everywhere else in the world, so it is no surprise that many
foreign films feature the sport as it's main theme. Today, Sony releases '
Rudi y
Cursi' on Blu-ray. Staff reviewer Martin Liebman recommends the title,
saying "Well-written, superbly shot, and expertly acted,
Rudo y
Cursi superbly rounds out Sony's trio of fantastic sports titles under
their "Classic" banner."
Another title Martin had a chance to review this week was '
Sunshine
Cleaning', an independent release coming from Anchor Bay. He
concludes his review by stating, "Supported by a collection of equally
understated but nevertheless genuine and effective performances, as well
as steady direction from Christine Jeffs,
Sunshine Cleaning is
another standout independent feature from Starz/Anchor Bay/Overture.
Likewise, the Blu-ray release is of the high quality format aficionados
should now expect from Starz."
Paramount brings the Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey romantic
comedy '
How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days', which is sure to please the
female high definition audience. If you're looking for a film you and your
significant other can enjoy together, Universal's Blu-ray release of '
Duplicity
may just do the trick.
Horror fans will jump at the chance to own '
Children of the Corn' on Blu-
ray today, while TV fans will be sure to check out '
Smallville:
The Complete Eighth Season' and '
Lie to Me: Season One'. All
come out on Blu-ray today.
