Dracula (1958) 4K Blu-ray

Warner Archive, in association with Hammer Films, is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Terence Fisher's Dracula (1958), starring Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Michael Gough, Melissa Stribling, and Carol Marsh. The releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 27.

One Night Only Collector's Edition 4K Blu-ray

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced that it will release on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray Will Gluck's romantic dramedy One Night Only (2026), starring Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner, Bobby Cannavale, Molly Ringwald, and LeVar Burton. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

Gwendoline Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray

Severin Films has dated and detailed its upcoming Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray release of Just Jaeckin's Gwendoline (1984), starring Tawny Kitaen, Brent Huff, Zabou Breitman, Bernadette Lafont, and Jean Rougerie. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on November 24.

This Week on Blu-ray: August 31-September 6

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

The Music Man and Mystic River Announced for Blu-ray

Warner Home Video has announced that they will bring the Academy Award- winning films 'The Music Man' and 'Mystic River' to Blu-ray on February 2nd. Video for both films will be presented in 2.4:1 1080p VC-1. Audio specs have yet to be announced for 'The Music Man', but 'Mystic River' will feature a 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack.

Jazzmix Heading to Blu-ray (Update)

Barking Dogs Productions has announced that they will bring 'Jazzmix in NYC: Vol 1' to Blu-ray on February 2nd (November 17th in France). Last November, a French film crew went to the Big Apple and filmed some of the best Jazz musicians the city has to offer in high definition. The two-disc set will present eight hours of material in 1.78:1 1080p AVC accompanied by a 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack.

For Disney, the animated classic 'Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs' represents many firsts. It was not only the company's first animated feature, but also the first commercially successful animated feature ever released. Today, it achieves another first as the first Blu-ray release in the company's Diamond Series line of animated classics. And while not the first Blu-ray title to be released before the DVD, this is the first substantial lead given to Blu-ray with seven weeks separating it from the DVD release. Shorts Announced for Blu-ray Release

Warner Home Video has announced that they will bring the Robert Rodriquez film 'Shorts' to Blu-ray on November 24th, day-and-date with the DVD release. This BD-25 release will present the film in 1.85:1 1080p AVC accompanied by a 5.1 Dolby TrueHD soundtrack and include both a DVD and digital copy of the film.

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced the technical specs and special features for the upcoming Blu-ray release of 'Angels & Demons', which is currently scheduled to hit store shelves on November 24th, day-and-date with the DVD release. This two-disc set will present both the theatrical and extended versions of the film in 2.40:1 1080p AVC video accompanied by a 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack.

TDK Develops a 320GB Blu-ray Disc

TDK is set to demonstrate a 10-layer 320GB Blu-ray Disc at CEATEC in Japan this week. The company was able to expand the capacity of each layer from the standard 25GB to 32GB, and stack them them up to 10 layers thick while using existing Blu-ray technology. TDK was able to do this by altering the material of each layer to operate at higher efficiency.

Ritek to Double Blu-ray Production Capability

Ritek is planning to issue up to 250 new shares in order to raise additional capital for the expansion of their Blu-ray production capability. Currently, the company can produce one million Blu-ray discs per month, and hopes to expand that capability to two million Blu-ray discs per month by the end of the year.

In an early announcement to retailers, 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring 'Cheaper by the Dozen 2' to Blu-ray on January 5th. Technical specs have not been officially announced at this time, but you can expect to see a 1080p AVC video presentation accompanied by a 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack.

With Help from PS3, Adoption of Blu-ray Faster than DVD

According to a new study released by Futuresource, adoption of Blu-ray will surpass DVD when comparing year five for each home video medium. In 2002, DVD adoption (including the PS2) was 32.6%, and Futuresource is predicting that in 2010, Blu-ray adoption (including PS3) will be 34.1%. They further predict that in year eight (2013), adoption of Blu-ray will rise to 67.8%.

Season 2 of Sarah Connor Chronicles Announced for UK Release

Warner Home Video has announced that they will bring 'Terminator: Sarah Connor Chronicles, Season 2' to Blu-ray in the UK on November 16th, day-and-date with the DVD release. Technical specs have not been announced at this time, but you can expect to see 1080p VC-1 video and Dolby Digital audio similar to the US release.

For the second week in a row, 20th Century Fox's release of 'X-Men Origins: Wolverine' took the top spot on the Nielsen VideoScan charts. It again dominated the competition, selling four times as units as the next best seller. Second and third places went to new releases 'Star Trek: The Next Generation Movie Collection' from Paramount and Warner's 'Observe and Report'.

Beginning sometime next month, Pioneer will offer their new BDR-205 Blu-ray Writer to system integrators, a Blu-ray Disc drive that offers an amazing 12X write speed for both single and dual layer Blu-ray media. According to the Library of Congress, the 1939 film adaptation of the American fairy tale 'The Wizard of Oz' is the most watched film of all time. After a mediocre (but successful) theatrical debut, the film gradually obtained an iconic status through re-releases and annual televised broadcasts - a tradition which is still being observed to this very day. For today's Blu-ray release celebrating the 70th anniversary of the film's release, Warner (who acquire MGM's pre-1986 library) has delivered one of the most stunning Blu-ray releases yet.

PSP Digital Copy Included on Sony Blu-ray Releases

Beginning with the November 10th Blu-ray releases of 'Godzilla' and 'The Ugly Truth', Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will include a digital copy especially for the PSP on select Blu-ray disc releases. The announcement comes just days before the release the PSP Go, Sony's latest iteration of their portable gaming platform which will - for the first time - have no removable media option.

Image Entertainment has announced that it will release the drama 'The Other Man' on Blu-ray on December 15, day-and-date with the DVD. This movie stars Liam Neeson, as a husband who suspects his wife (Laura Linney) of adultery and tracks down "the other man", a shoe designer (Antonio Banderas). It got a limited release at a dozen theaters in September.

According to a recent article by EMediaLive, the upcoming Blu-ray release of 'Highlander: Season One' will feature many BD Touch special features including facts, bios, and bonus videos that viewers can download to their iPhone or iPod Touch. According to site Den of Geek, 'Inglourious Basterds' will be released in the US on December 15 (December 14 in the UK). BD Sales Information: September 14-20 (Update)

During the week ended September 20, 'X-Men Origins: Wolverine' cut through the Blu-ray sales charts like butter, according to Nielsen VideoScan. The domination of the charts by the origin story of the mutant superhero was such that the BD sold over six times as much as the rest of the top ten put together. Update: overall sales figures added.
