Dracula (1958) 4K Blu-ray

Warner Archive, in association with Hammer Films, is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Terence Fisher's Dracula (1958), starring Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Michael Gough, Melissa Stribling, and Carol Marsh. The releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 27.

One Night Only Collector's Edition 4K Blu-ray

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced that it will release on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray Will Gluck's romantic dramedy One Night Only (2026), starring Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner, Bobby Cannavale, Molly Ringwald, and LeVar Burton. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

Gwendoline Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray

Severin Films has dated and detailed its upcoming Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray release of Just Jaeckin's Gwendoline (1984), starring Tawny Kitaen, Brent Huff, Zabou Breitman, Bernadette Lafont, and Jean Rougerie. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on November 24.

This Week on Blu-ray: August 31-September 6

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

HMV to Hold 24 Signing with Carlos "Tony Almeida" Bernard

Actor Carlos Bernard is in the UK to promote the release of '24: Season 7', which streets in Blighty next Monday, and will be signing copies of the DVD and Blu-ray sets at HMV, 150 Oxford Street, London, from 6 p.m. of October 19. As well as getting to meet the legendary Tony Almeida, the first 50 people in line will also receive "exclusive '24' goodies."

Transformers Midnight Launch Parties and Rebates

On October 19, about 110 Best Buy stores across the USA will reopen shortly before midnight, offering special discounts and related freebies with the DVD and Blu-ray releases of 'Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen'. Reportedly, Best Buy will discount $3 off the BD version for early bird shoppers. Two food companies are also offering rebates.

Special Edition BD for 10 Things I Hate About You

In an early announcement to retailers it has been revealed that Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment is set to release the romantic comedy '10 Things I Hate About You', starring Heath Ledger and Julia Stiles, on Blu-ray on January 5, 2010. No release details are available at this time, other than it will be a two-disc special edition.

Rumor: Branagh's Hamlet Blu-ray in 2010

Kenneth Branagh's famously unabridged adaptation of William Shakespeare's 'Hamlet' used to be one of the longest awaited titles on DVD, and when it was finally released in 2007, it didn't get a Blu-ray or HD DVD version, contrary to earlier reports. Now Warner Home Video has allegedly put the title back on the schedule for a BD release, with a tentative street date of August 17, 2010.

Public Enemies Blu-ray Announced

Universal Studios Home Entertainment has announced that it will release 'Public Enemies' on Blu-ray on December 8, day-and-date with the DVD. This crime movie, directed by Michael Mann, is inspired by infamous outlaw John Dilliger (Johnny Depp) and the FBI agent who pursued him (Christian Bale). The Blu-ray will include a digital copy of the movie.

Oppo Launches in UK, Pulls Plug on DVD

Oppo, the maker of the acclaimed BDP-83 Blu-ray player, is expanding its BD business to the UK and has revealed that the company is no longer interested in developing DVD hardware. "We have sold out of DVD players and there are no more to come," said Oppo spokesman Pan Min to UK magazine Home Cinema Choice. "The DVD business is over for us. We are committed to Blu-ray."

No Moon in America Until Next Year

Many science-fiction enthusiasts are eagerly waiting for the Blu-ray release of Duncan Jones's critically-acclaimed space isolation drama 'Moon', especially after it was announced in the UK for November 16. But they'll have to wait a bit longer, according to what Jones himself posted on his Twitter page: the US release is unofficially set to January 12.

Criterion Starts BD Case Replacement Program

When The Criterion Collection started releasing titles on Blu-ray, many enthusiasts complained about the cardboard Digipak cases used by the studio. Now Criterion has switched to clear plastic cases for future titles, and owners of the existing cardboard cases will be able to replace them with the new ones, albeit for a price.

BD Sales: October 5-11 (Update)

'Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs: Platinum Edition' was far and away the top-selling title on Blu-ray on the week ended October 11, according to Nielsen VideoScan. In a format first, this BD edition of the classic Disney title (which was released weeks ahead of the equivalent DVD edition, although with a bundled DVD) was also clearly the top title on the overall packaged-media sales chart. Update: overall sales figures added.

Universal Studios Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring the Will Ferrell comedy 'Land of the Lost' to Blu-ray on November 23rd, day-and-date with the DVD release. Technical specs have not been announced at this time, though you can expect them to be similar to the US release with 1080p AVC video accompanied by a 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack.

Anchor Bay Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring the Michael Douglas film 'Beyond a Reasonable Doubt' to Blu-ray on December 22nd, day-and-date with the DVD release. For the release, video will be presented in 1.85:1 1080p video accompanied by a 5.1 Dolby Digital soundtrack.

When the time came to transition the fictional town of South Park, Colorado to the big screen, creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone decided that a musical would be the perfect format for conveying the shows theme. A true testament to their talents, the film - 'South Park: Bigger, Longer, & Uncut' - was a hit despite its unconventional format. Today, fans of the film get to see the movie for the first time in high definition on Blu-ray.

BluFocus Certified as Blu-ray Movie Player Testing Center

BluFocus has announced that they have been certified by the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) as a Blu-ray Movie Play Verification Testing Center, the first company to receive such a certification in the United States. Additionally, they have been approved to test BD-ROM Audio Visual Content and are in the process of obtaining certification for BD-ROM PC Application Software testing.

Kong Blu-ray Delayed

Our good friends over at TV Shows on DVD have the scoop that Image Entertainments upcoming Blu-ray release of 'Kong: Return to the Jungle' has been delayed until January 26th. Originally scheduled for release tomorrow, October 13th, no reason was given for the delay, though we have now learned that a PCM track will be included as part of the release.

Blu-ray Propels Rental Revenue to New Highs

According to Rentrak, a dramatic increase in Blu-ray rentals has spurred an overall increase in rental revenue despite tough economic times. Third quarter rental revenue for Blu-ray was up 44.5% over this same period last year, which has, in turn, increased overall rental revenue by 10% for the third quarter.

Blu-ray Brings New Life to Black & White Films

The vast majority of new Blu-ray owners are enticed to the format with high-dollar blockbuster action films, but there are a smaller, similarly dedicated group of people who would rather see more black and white films brought to the high definition format. These films, due to their age and monochrome characteristics, are often more difficult to restore, but the results are often more rewarding.

Blu-Con 2.0 Dated for November

After a successful first outing, Blu-Con 2.0 is set to kick off November 3rd at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles, CA. Target Exclusive Transformers 2 Blu-ray Packaging

Not to be out-done but Walmarts exclusive IMAX Blu-ray release, Target will be offering their own exclusive 'Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen' Blu-ray release with a case that "transforms" into a 14" replica of Bumblebee. Before you get too excited, transforming the Blu-ray case into Bumblebee takes all of 5 steps to expand arms and legs on the case.

Blu-ray Batman Collection is Coming

The folks over at The World's Finest have recently learned that Warner Home Video will release the 'Blu-ray Batman Collection' exclusively for Blu-ray on November 3rd. The box set will feature Blu-ray copies of 'Batman Begins', 'The Dark Knight', and 'Batman: Gotham Knight' in a new cardboard slipcase.

BD Sales: September 28 - October 4 (Update 2)

The monsters were too much for the wizard to handle, as Dreamworks animated feature 'Monsters vs. Aliens' took the top spot over last week's other high profile release, 'The Wizard of Oz: 70th Anniversary Edition' which came in second on the Nielsen VideoScan Blu-ray charts. And after two consecutive weeks in the top spot, 'X-Men Origins: Wolverine' drops to the third spot.

BDA: No Discs Bigger than 50GB for Movies

With recent announcements from Sharp and TDK regarding increased capacity of Blu-ray discs (100GB and 320GB respectively), the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) was asked to comment on the possibility of Blu-ray movie titles utilizing the new technology. Andy Parsons, Chair of the Blu-ray Disc Association Promotion Committee in the United States, made it clear that this would be unlikely to happen any time soon.

Vanguard Announces First Blu-ray Release

Vanguard Cinema has announced that they will release 'Fuel' for Blu-ray on January 1st, day-and-date with the DVD release. This film starring C. Thomas Howell is the first Blu-ray release from the independent studio. Technical specs and special features for the release have not been announced at this time.

Walmart Gets Exclusive Transformers 2 IMAX Blu-ray

According to "nelson", the forum admin for the official Michael Bay forum (and confidant of the world famous director), Walmart has exclusive rights to sell the IMAX version of 'Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen' Blu-ray. This version is roughly a minute longer (featuring extended fight sequences) and will "open up" the aspect ratio during IMAX film scenes (similar to 'The Dark Knight' Blu-ray).
