Dracula (1958) 4K Blu-ray

Warner Archive, in association with Hammer Films, is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Terence Fisher's Dracula (1958), starring Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Michael Gough, Melissa Stribling, and Carol Marsh. The releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 27.

One Night Only Collector's Edition 4K Blu-ray

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced that it will release on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray Will Gluck's romantic dramedy One Night Only (2026), starring Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner, Bobby Cannavale, Molly Ringwald, and LeVar Burton. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

Gwendoline Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray

Severin Films has dated and detailed its upcoming Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray release of Just Jaeckin's Gwendoline (1984), starring Tawny Kitaen, Brent Huff, Zabou Breitman, Bernadette Lafont, and Jean Rougerie. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on November 24.

This Week on Blu-ray: August 31-September 6

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

Rumor: Zombieland Blu-ray this February

According to zombie website ShootForTheHead.com, the horror-comedy surprise hit 'Zombieland' will be released for Blu-ray on February 2nd by Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. Technical specs have not been announced at this time, but you can expect to see a 1080p AVC video presentation accompanied by a 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack.

World Series Blu-ray Coming this December

Shout Factory has announced that they will bring '2009 World Series Films: Philadelphia Phillies vs. New York Yankees' to Blu-ray on December 15th. The disc will feature 80 minutes of highlights from the recent World Series, including an additional 30 minutes of highlights from the games leading upto the championship game.

Fox Holds Free Fight Club Screening in NY and LA

J.J. Abrams on Attack of the Show Tonight

J.J. Abrams, director of 'Star Trek', which is being released for Blu-ray tomorrow, will be on G4's Attack of the Show tonight at 7pm ET/PT. On the show, he will be discussing some of the extras found on the Blu-ray release, his favorite deleted scene, and some inside information about what fans can expect to see in the next Star Trek film.

Walmart's Black Friday ad has been leaked, and not surprisingly, a Blu-ray Disc player is among the many deals bargain shoppers can look forward to when they go bargain shopping next week. The retailer will offer the Magnavox NB500MG1F BonusView (Profile v1.1) Blu-ray Disc player for only $78.

E1 Releases First Fitness BDs

On December 8, the “Jay Johnson's Boot Camp Fitness” series debuts on BD with four titles: 'Ultimate Cardio', 'Ultimate 3x30', 'Ultimate Abs' and 'Ultimate Body Vol. 1', each one a series of intense workouts led by Jay Johnson, retired U.S. Army Drill Instructor and official trainer of the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders. These are the first fitness titles to get a Blu-ray release in the US.

The Burning Plain Blu-ray Announced

Magnolia Home Entertainment has announced that it will release 'The Burning Plain' on Blu-ray on January 12, 2010. 'The Burning Plain' stars Charlize Theron and Kim Basinger and is the directorial debut of Guillermo Arriaga, who for a long time was the screenwriter of Alejandro González Iñárritu ('Amores Perros', '21 Grams', 'Babel').

Bon Jovi Blu-ray Announced for UK Release

Universal Music has announced that they will bring 'Bon Jovi: Live at Madison Square Garden' to Blu-ray in the UK on November 23rd, day-and-date with the DVD release. Technical specs have not been announced at this time, though previous Universal Music releases have been presented in 1080p AVC video accompanied by a 5.1 PCM soundtrack.

Meijer has revealed their Black Friday deals the the bargain hunger public, and one item sure to sell out quickly next Friday is an $89 Blu-ray Disc player. Using the photo from the ad, we can tell that the player offered will be the Sylvania NB530SLX, a BonusView (Profile v1.1) Blu-ray Disc player popular for its low entry price.

20th Century Fox Home Entertainment has announced the technical specs and special features for the upcoming Blu-ray release of 'Post Grad', which is due to hit store shelves on January 12th, day-and-date with the DVD release. Video will be presented in 1.85:1 1080p AVC accompanied by a 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack.

Soul Power Blu-ray Announced

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced that it will release 'Soul Power' on Blu-ray on January 26, 2010. This movie documents the three-night music festival planned in Zaire in 1974 to coincide with the now-legendary and epic "Rumble in the Jungle" between Muhammad Ali and George Foreman. It received a limited theatrical release in the US in July.

Halloween Remake Sequel BD Announced

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced 'Halloween II' for release on Blu-ray on January 12, 2010. This Rob Zombie-helmed sequel of his own remake of John Carpenter's horror modern classic had been distributed theatrically by The Weinstein Company, with a meager total box office take of around $33 million.

Rumor: Saving Private Ryan Blu-ray in March

German specialized site Bluray-Disc.de recently gained access to a list of upcoming Blu-ray titles from retail chain Saturn, which included Steven Spielberg's 'Saving Private Ryan' for March 25, 2010. As usual, this information must be considered unofficial until there is a formal announcement from the studio.

Criterion Reveals February Blu-ray Titles

The Criterion Collection has announced a very European Blu-ray slate for February 2010, which consists of two new releases – Steve McQueen's 'Hunger' and Götz Spielmann's 'Revanche' – and one major classic film – Max Ophüls's 'Lola Montès'. 'Hunger' and 'Revanche' will feature director-approved high-definition transfers and DTS-HD Master Audio sondtracks, whereas 'Lola Montès' will come in uncompressed (LPCM) stereo.

Pandorum Blu-ray Gets December Date

Anchor Bay Entertainment has announced the sci-fi/thriller/horror movie 'Pandorum' for release on Blu-ray on December 22, less than three months after opening in theaters. 'Pandorum' stars Dennis Quaid and Ben Foster as two crew members of a spacecraft who wake up to find the ship abandoned, with no idea who they are, how long they've been asleep, or what their mission is.

Roland Emmerich Talks 2012 Blu-ray Alternate Ending

During a promotion interview for '2012', German-born director Roland Emmerich was asked about whether the Blu-ray of his latest disaster extravaganza would include any deleted scenes. Emmerich said there was "not much", except for an alternate ending that was deemed "too unrealistic" and was therefore cut out.

Image's BD Revenue Increases 150%, Zooms Past Digital and Broadcast

Image Entertainment, as part of the reported financial results for its second fiscal quarter, informed that domestic Blu-ray revenues in July-September 2009 were over $2.5 million, 150.6% up from the same quarter last year. BD is now the second largest revenue stream for Image, while digital distribution revenues increased by just 8.7% and stuck around the $1 million mark, and broadcast dipped 47.9%.

Criterion BDs 50% Off at Amazon

Probably in response to the ongoing Criterion sale at Barnes & Noble, Amazon has reduced the price of most of the titles released on Blu-ray so far by The Criterion Collection, which now can be purchased at 50% off MSRP, or $19.99 in most cases.

Rumor: Road to Perdition in May 2010

According to French site HD Numérique, recent Blu-ray releases from Fox Pathé Europa include a flier with the studio's upcoming titles, including Sam Mendes' 'Road to Perdition' for May 2010. HD Numérique followed up with the studio's PR service, but there was no official comment or announcement.

MGM Library up for Sale

According to Variety, MGM is expected to essentially be auctioned off within the next few weeks. Its library would be acquired by a major studio; another party would buy the roaring lion logo; and yet another would buy the United Artists film studio. MGM's financial problems have been in the spotlight since the summer, and as of September was said to be teetering on bankruptcy.

District 9 Blu-ray Lands a Week Earlier

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has moved forward the release date of the science-fiction sleeper hit 'District 9', which will now hit store shelves on December 22, in time for Christmas shopping. Disc specifications and special features remain unchanged from those initially announced.

Fox Blu-ray Titles for January and February Revealed

Home entertainment site The Digital Bits has revealed the slate of titles that 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment intends to release on Blu-ray in early 2010. New releases 'Post Grad' and 'Whip It' will street on January 12 and 26 respectively, while catalog titles 'The Last King of Scotland' and 'Walk the Line' will come out on BD on February 2.

Antichrist Gets Blu-ray

Artificial Eye has officially announced that it will release Lars von Trier's controversial 'Antichrist' on Blu-ray on January 11, 2010. Initially this was expected to be an HMV exclusive for November, but now apparently all retailers will have it on the same date. There is no information regarding region encoding.

BD Sales: November 2-8 – G.I. Joe Wins the Battle (Update)

Joe: The Rise of Cobra' was the clear winner in BD sales for the week ended November 8, according to Nielsen VideoScan First Alert, selling over three times more than 'The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3'. Last week's number one, 'Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen', dipped to third place. Update: Charts and sales figures added.

Best Buy Ramps up BD Space, Promotion, Education

This holiday season, Best Buy Co. will allocate up to 30% of its entertainment retail space to BD, up from 10% last year, and move the BD software section up front. Consumer education on the benefits of Blu-ray and the product required is also a priority. Best Buy is also working with two studios to test new store patterns.

Warner Lowers Prices on Blu-ray TV Series

Warner Home Video has announced that they will lower prices on several Blu-ray TV series beginning December 1st. Currently listed with a manufacturers' suggest retail price of $79.99, these Blu-ray sets - which includes all three available seasons of 'Smallville' - will be discounted 15% to a new MSRP of $69.97.
