Dracula (1958) 4K Blu-ray

Warner Archive, in association with Hammer Films, is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Terence Fisher's Dracula (1958), starring Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Michael Gough, Melissa Stribling, and Carol Marsh. The releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 27.

One Night Only Collector's Edition 4K Blu-ray

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced that it will release on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray Will Gluck's romantic dramedy One Night Only (2026), starring Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner, Bobby Cannavale, Molly Ringwald, and LeVar Burton. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

Gwendoline Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray

Severin Films has dated and detailed its upcoming Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray release of Just Jaeckin's Gwendoline (1984), starring Tawny Kitaen, Brent Huff, Zabou Breitman, Bernadette Lafont, and Jean Rougerie. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on November 24.

This Week on Blu-ray: August 31-September 6

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

Apollo 13 Blu-ray Blasts Off in April

Universal Studios Home Entertainment has announced Apollo 13 for release on Blu-ray on April 13, just two days after the 40th anniversary of the launch of the NASA mission that nearly ended in disaster when an oxygen tank in the spaceship ruptured two hundred. This Blu-ray will exclusively include a U-Control track with a wealth of history and technology information. It will come in a non-flipper BD50 disc.

The 82nd Oscars and Blu-ray: Nominations

Today, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the nominees for the 82nd Academy Awards. The Oscar race is led by James Cameron's Avatar and Kathryn Bigelow's The Hurt Locker, with nine nominations each. This year, ten movies fight for the best picture award, four of which are already out on Blu-ray and five others will be soon.

Zombies are the speed bumps of the horror world. Inherently evil by design, they pose little more than an annoyance when only one is involved. But as they multiply, the danger increases exponentially (try managing a parking lot full of speed bumps without losing your sanity). The works of zombie guru George A. Romero are nothing short of legendary, but recent zombie spoofs, including today's Blu-ray release of Zombieland have proven to be just as (if not more) entertaining.

Warner Ends Blu-ray Replication Deal with Cinram, Goes with Technicolor

Warner Home Video has notified replication company Cinram that it has exercised an option to terminate its service agreements on July 31, 2010. The notice covers all Cinram entities globally and will directly impact operations in North America, Mexico, UK, France, Germany and Spain. This is a serious blow for Cinram: in 2009, WHV revenues represented approximately 28% of the total consolidated revenues of the replication company. Update: Warner alliance with Technicolor announced.

Walmart Selling Pioneer Blu-ray Player for $108

Retail giant Wal-Mart is offering the Pioneer BDP-120 Blu-ray player for only $108 plus shipping, labeled as "rollback". Unlike other recent Blu-ray players on special sale, such as the Sylvania player in last Friday's Amazon Deal of the Day, the BDP-120 supports BonusView and BD-Live.

GoodFellas 20th Anniversary Blu-ray Recycles 3-Year-Old Disc

Ever since Warner Home Video announced GoodFellas: 20th Anniversary Edition, many enthusiasts expressed their hope that WHV would use this opportunity to improve the audio or the video presentation of this major Martin Scorsese movie. However, site reviewer Kenneth Brown has taken a preliminary look at the 20th Anniversary Edition Blu-ray and, pending a full review, informs that the movie disc is identical to the GoodFellas Blu-ray released in early 2007.

Old Dogs Blu-ray Announced and Detailed

Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment has revealed the release details for Old Dogs, which is coming out on Blu-ray on on March 9. This comedy starring John Travolta and Robin Williams will be available in two editions: a single-disc BD and a BD/DVD/Digital Copy combo pack.

Panasonic 3-D Authoring Center Up and Running

Panasonic unveiled its "fully operational" Blu-ray 3D Advanced Authoring Center located at Panasonic's R&D facility, Panasonic Hollywood Laboratory. The Advanced Authoring Center was recently upgraded and equipped with the latest 3-D technological innovations, based on standards developed by the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA). It now offers studios and filmmakers image processing, interactive programming, authoring and disc certification services, which are capable of making Blu-ray 3D Discs commercially available as early as Spring 2010.

Pirate Radio Blu-ray Announced

Universal Studios Home Entertainment has announced that it will release the British comedy Pirate Radio on Blu-ray on April 13. Note that this BD edition will only feature the U.S cut of the movie, 12 minutes shorter than the original version (titled The Boat That Rocked and released on Blu-ray in the UK in September 2009).

Battlestar Galactica Series Blu-ray Repackaged, Adds The Plan

Universal Studios Home Entertainment has announced Battlestar Galactica: The Complete Series for release on April 6. The main change from the July 2009 edition (which is now discontinued) is that this new box set will include Battlestar Galactica: The Plan (released in October 2009). Additionally, it will come in slimmer packaging and the list price is lower.

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced Broken Embraces (Los abrazos rotos), the latest movie directed by Spanish filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar, for Blu-ray release on March 16. Broken Embraces, starring Penélope Cruz, is a complex story of amour fou, jealousy, betrayal, and dark secrets revealed, going back and forth in time, and both behind the camera and in front of it.

Confirming previous rumors, an early announcement to retailers indicates that, on
May 4April 27, Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment will release the Michael Bay sci-fi/action movie Armageddon and the western Tombstone on Blu-ray. No information on audio/video specifications or special features is available at this time. Update: date change. -
Lost Season 6 & Complete Collection Blu-ray Dated

The sixth season of the TV phenomenon Lost doesn't even premiere until next Tuesday, and it already has a Blu-ray release date. TV Shows on DVD (citing information posted on Ingram Entertainment's VideoETA website) is reporting that, on August 24, Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment will release both Lost: The Complete Sixth and Final Season and the mammoth Lost: The Complete Collection, with exclusive bonus content.

Sherlock Holmes Blu-ray Gets Late March Date

Warner Home Video has announced Sherlock Holmes for release on a BD/DVD/Digital Copy combo pack on March 30. This kinetic reimagining of the character created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle outraged purists but was a box office hit. The BD will feature the already-familiar "Maximum Movie Mode" with director Guy Ritchie.

Restored Battleship Potemkin Blu-ray in April

Kino Video is set to release the classic of silent cinema Battleship Potemkin, directed by Sergei M. Eisenstein, on April 20. For this 1080p restoration, Kino has joined the Deutsche Kinematek in association with Russia's Goskinofilm, the British Film Institute, Bundesfilm Archive Berlin, and the Munich Film Museum. Dozens of missing shots have been replaced, and all 146-title cards restored to Eisenstein's specifications.

Anchor Bay Entertainment has announced the release on Blu-ray, on April 13, of 'The Slammin' Salmon', the latest work of Broken Lizard, the comedy troupe behind 'Beerfest' and 'Super Troopers. It stars Michael Clarke Duncan as a restaurant owner and ex boxing champ who, indebted to the Japanese mob, challenges his waiters to sell more food in one night than they've ever sold before – or face a pummeling.

Blue Underground has announced two movies for release on Blu-ray on May 25: the horror cult movie 'City of the Living Dead', directed by Lucio Fulci, and the spaghetti western 'Django', directed by Sergio Corbucci. Both of them have received new video transfers from the original camera negative.

Everything with Blu-ray 3D is happening extremely fast. January isn't even over yet and Amazon already has a compatible player up for preorder: the Samsung BD-C6900, announced mere weeks ago at CES. At the time of writing, it appears as "temporarily out of stock", with no fixed availability date. It carries a price tag of $399.99.

At the moment there is no information on which specific titles might be included, or if they will be released separately or in a commemorative box set.

Over 10% of Netflix Subscribers Pay for Blu-ray Option

As a part of the earnings conference call for the fourth quarter of 2009, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings announced: "Now over 10% of our subscribers are Blu-ray enabled." In other words, over 1.2 million Netflix subscribers now pay the $1-$9 Blu-ray access charge over their monthly subscription rate. This represents over 70% growth year-on-year, despite the 20% rate increase during 2009.

Rumor: Jurassic Park Blu-ray in Late 2010

The Netherlands branch of Universal Studios Home Entertainment has listed Steven Spielberg's 'Jurassic Park' and 'The Lost World: Jurassic Park' as coming soon to Blu-ray, with a release date of November 4. 'Jurassic Park III' was not mentioned. No other release details or special features are known at this early stage.

Blu-ray Sales, Jan. 18-24: Gamer is Winner (Update)

Gamer was the top-selling title on Blu-ray during the week ended January 24, according to Nielsen VideoScan First Alert. This science-fiction/action movie (which was far from a box office hit) benefited from Lionsgate's long-standing strategy of saving some appealing content for release after the holiday season. BD accounted for 31% of total disc sales of this title. Update: top 10 chart and BD sales percentages added.

Warner Exec Confirms Hobbit Delay – No Extended LOTR Blu-ray till 2012?

Warner Bros. COO Alan Horn (who also oversees New Line Cinema, which became a part of WB in early 2008) said that the most probable date for the theatrical release of 'The Hobbit' would be in the fourth quarter of 2012, thus confirming earlier reports. In that case, the theatrical version of the 'Lord of the Rings' trilogy (due out on April 6) could be the only one available on Blu-ray for a long time.
