Dracula (1958) 4K Blu-ray

Warner Archive, in association with Hammer Films, is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Terence Fisher's Dracula (1958), starring Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Michael Gough, Melissa Stribling, and Carol Marsh. The releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 27.

One Night Only Collector's Edition 4K Blu-ray

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced that it will release on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray Will Gluck's romantic dramedy One Night Only (2026), starring Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner, Bobby Cannavale, Molly Ringwald, and LeVar Burton. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

Gwendoline Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray

Severin Films has dated and detailed its upcoming Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray release of Just Jaeckin's Gwendoline (1984), starring Tawny Kitaen, Brent Huff, Zabou Breitman, Bernadette Lafont, and Jean Rougerie. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on November 24.

This Week on Blu-ray: August 31-September 6

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

The Crazies Remake Announced on Blu-ray

Anchor Bay Entertainment has announced The Crazies for release on Blu-ray on June 29. This horror/scifi movie is a remake of the 1973 movie of the same title (also available on Blu-ray from Blue Underground). It opened to positive critical reception and grossed nearly $39 million at the box office.

Showbox Home Entertainment has announced Newsmakers (Goryachie novosti) for release on Blu-ray on May 3. This crime movie is a Russian-language remake of Johnnie To's celebrated Hong Kong action/thriller Breaking News, directed by Swedish filmmaker Anders Banke (director of the award-winning vampire movie Frostbite).

G.I. Joe Animated Movie Announced on Blu-ray

Shout! Factory, in collaboration with Hasbro, Inc., has announced the original animated 1987 movie G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero, The Movie for release on a Blu-ray/DVD combo pack on July 27. This release is the final installment to complete G.I. JOE: A Real American Hero – The Complete Series (released last year, on DVD only). The Special Collectors Edition edition will offers viewers an exclusive option of viewing the animated movie presentation in widescreen.

StudioCanal Blu-ray Titles in September

On its Facebook page, Optimum Home Entertainment has revealed that it will release six titles on Blu-ray in September as part of the StudioCanal Collection: Le cercle rouge (Jean-Pierre Melville, 1970); Delicatessen (Jean-Pierre Jeunet and Marc Caro, 1991), The Graduate (Mike Nichols, 1967), Mulholland Drive (David Lynch, 2001), The Pianist (Roman Polanski, 2002) and The Third Man (Carol Reed, 1949).

Avatar UK Blu-ray Launched at London’s HMV

Avatar has been released in the UK today, after enjoying an official launch event at HMV Oxford St yesterday, where Stephen Lang (Colonel Miles Quaritch) signed copies of the film and was on hand for a Q&A. HMV's flagship store at 150 Oxford Street, London, was transformed into Pandora to host the official UK launch of the biggest film of all time- Avatar on DVD and Blu-ray.

Sanctuary Seasons 1 and 2 Announced on Blu-ray

E1 Entertainment has announced the Blu-ray release of Sanctuary: The Complete First Season and Sanctuary: The Complete Second Season for release on Blu-ray on June 15. This supernatural-themed TV series, which began life online as a webisode miniseries and subsequently expanded and aired on Syfy, is groundbreaking in that it is shot using the RED camera and almost entirely on green-screen.

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced The Last Station for release on Blu-ray on June 22. This film recounts the final year in the life of the great Russian writer, Leo Tolstoy. It stars Christopher Plummer as Tolstoy and Helen Mirren as his wife Sofya Tolstaya – both of whom received nominations for the Golden Globes and the Academy Awards.

Magnolia Home Entertainment has announced The Eclipse for release on Blu-ray on June 29. This supernatural drama set in Ireland, starring Ciarán Hinds (Rome's Julius Caesar), premiered at the 2009 Tribeca Film Festival and only got a limited theatrical release in March 2010.

The Warlords Announced on Blu-ray

Magnolia Home Entertainment has announced the epic war movie The Warlords (Tau ming chong) for release on Blu-ray on June 29. This 2007 Hong Kong production, despite its production budget and cast (starring Jet Li, Andy Lau and Takeshi Kaneshiro) only saw a very limited theatrical release on April 2.

Avatar Already Top-selling Blu-ray Ever

20th Century Fox Home Entertainment has announced that the Blu-ray edition of James Cameron's Avatar had sold 2.7 million units by Sunday afternoon, thus surpassing in four days the lifetime sales of the previous top-selling Blu-ray, The Dark Knight, which took over a year to sell 2.5 million units. Overall, Avatar has sold 6.7 million copies on packaged media.

Complete Metropolis Theatrical Rerelease and Trailer

As previously reported, Kino International's Metropolis website has gone online, revealing first details of the theatrical rerelease and Blu-ray edition of The Complete Metropolis, with 25 minutes of added footage. The film is getting its American premiere tonight at Grauman's Chinese Theatre, Los Angeles, as part of the TCM Classic Film Festival, accompanied by the Alloy Orchestra.

BFI Announces Two Flipside Titles

BFI Video has announced two titles for release on Blu-ray on May 17 as part of its Flipside series: the "unjustly overlooked Swinging Sixties gem" The Pleasure Girls (Gerry O'Hara, 1965), starring Francesca Annis, Ian McShane and Klaus Kinski, and the controversial The Party's Over (Guy Hamilton 1963-1965), in an uncensored pre-release cut. Both titles will be available as Dual Format Editions, containing the Blu-ray and DVD versions of the films and the extras (on two discs).

Four-week Delay for Universal and Fox Blu-ray Titles at Redbox

Redbox has announced that it has reached long-term distribution agreements with 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment and Universal Studios Home Entertainment, according to which DVD and Blu-ray titles from these two studios will be available for rental at redbox locations 28 days after release. Redbox's access to Blu-ray titles, which redbox is testing in select markets, will be extended.

Avatar Blu-ray Sells 1.5m, Breaks First-Day Sales Record

According to Deadline Hollywood's Nikki Finke, quoting sources from 20th Century Fox, the Blu-ray edition of Avatar has sold 1.5 million units in the US and Canada during its first-day and has thus "blown away" the record for first-day Blu-ray sales, until now held by The Dark Knight, which had sold 600,000 units in December 9, 2008.

An early announcement to UK retailers reveals that Warner Home Video will release a wave of movies on Blu-ray in September, most of them from the science-fiction genre. On September 20, it will release The Exorcist, Forbidden Planet, Lost in Space, Mars Attacks! and Rush Hour. A week later, the studio will release THX 1138 and Timecop.

Warner Home Video has announced three comedy movies for release on Blu-ray on August 10: Peter Bogdanovich's 1972 hit What's Up, Doc? and two 1980s Chevy Chase vehicles, National Lampoon's Vacation and National Lampoon's European Vacation. Note that the latter two will be released separately, rather than in the double-feature edition WHV has been favoring of late.

London-based compression and authoring facility Eyeframe has started to use Kaleidoscope software to enrich its Blu-ray titles with user-friendly entertaining features. Sherlock Holmes regained the top spot in the Blu-ray sales charts for the week ended April 18, according to Nielsen VideoScan. Multi-award winner The Hurt Locker, now in its 14th week, jumped back to number 2, while the top seller for the previous week, The Lord of the Rings: The Motion Picture Trilogy, plummeted to fifth place.
