Dracula (1958) 4K Blu-ray

Warner Archive, in association with Hammer Films, is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Terence Fisher's Dracula (1958), starring Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Michael Gough, Melissa Stribling, and Carol Marsh. The releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 27.

One Night Only Collector's Edition 4K Blu-ray

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced that it will release on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray Will Gluck's romantic dramedy One Night Only (2026), starring Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner, Bobby Cannavale, Molly Ringwald, and LeVar Burton. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

Gwendoline Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray

Severin Films has dated and detailed its upcoming Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray release of Just Jaeckin's Gwendoline (1984), starring Tawny Kitaen, Brent Huff, Zabou Breitman, Bernadette Lafont, and Jean Rougerie. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on November 24.

This Week on Blu-ray: August 31-September 6

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

Stardust Gets Blu-ray Release in the US

Paramount Home Entertainment has officially announced the US release of Stardust for September 7. This fantasy/adventure movie, based on a novel by Neil Gaiman, is one of the last few titles released on HD DVD by the studio in 2007 but still awaiting a BD release in the US (although it was already available as an import).

Two Masters of Cinema Blu-ray Titles for July

Eureka Entertainment has announced two titles for release on Blu-ray within its Masters of Cinema Collection, with a street date of July 26: La planète sauvage (René Laloux, 1973) – also known as Fantastic Planet –, winner of the Grand Prix at Cannes and a landmark of European animation; and Japanese cult classic Vengeance Is Mine (Fukushû suru wa ware ni ari; Shohei Imamura, 1979).

The Mission Blu-ray in October, Exclusive to Amazon

Warner Home Video is set to release the 1986 epic movie The Mission, directed by Roland Joffe and starring Robert De Niro and Jeremy Irons, on October 5. According to retailer information, it will be an Amazon exclusive for an undetermined length of time. Disc specifications and special features are still to be announced.

American Beauty Coming Soon on Blu-ray

An early announcement to Canadian retailers indicates that Paramount Home Entertainment will release American Beauty on Blu-ray on September 21, possibly as part of the Sapphire Series. This 1999 Dreamworks SKG production, written by Alan Ball and directed by Sam Mendes, won five Academy Awards (Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor – Kevin Spacey –, Best Original Screenplay and Best Cinematography).

Retailer Leaks October Date for Back to the Future Blu-ray

One of the most eagerly-awaited catalog titles is definitely getting closer to an actual Blu-ray release. A Swedish home video retailer already has the Back to the Future Trilogy up for preorder, with a release date of October 27. There is no release information available, other than it will be a three-disc set.

Roger Waters’ The Wall Live Blu-ray Coming Soon

Pink Floyd news resource Brain Damage is reporting that Roger Waters: The Wall - Live in Berlin will be released "on or about July 23," tying in with the upcoming tour of the concept album/rock opera The Wall. This concert was held in Berlin, Germany, on July 21, 1990, in what mere months before was the no-man's land of the Berlin Wall, and featured numerous special guests, including Scorpions, Cyndi Lauper and Bryan Adams.

Thanksgiving and Christmas Blu-ray from Warner

Warner Home Video has announced two holiday-themed titles for Blu-ray release on October 5: the Peanuts special A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving and the 1974 stop-motion movie The Year without a Santa Claus. Additionally, the studio will release the Peanuts Holiday Collection (comprised of It's The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown, A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving and A Charlie Brown Christmas).

Robin Hood Blu-ray with Extended Director’s Cut

According to German specialised site bluray-disc.de, Robin Hood will be released on Blu-ray in that country on September 23. Full edition details are still pending, but it has been revealed that the feature will be presented in an extended director's cut, with approximately 26 additional minutes of footage. At the moment there is no information as to whether the 140-minute theatrical cut will also be included.

The Greatest Blu-ray Exclusively at Blockbuster

Blockbuster Inc. has announced the exclusive release of the movie The Greatest, which is now available in its stores and by mail. It will be available at other retailers on July 13. The first feature film from writer and director Shana Feste, The Greatest received its world premiere at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival.

Image Announces $5 a Day on Blu-ray

Image Entertainment has officially announced $5 a Day for release on Blu-ray on August 24 (pushed from an initial January street date). This comedy/road movie about "relationships on a shoestring budget" is directed by Nigel Cole (Sundance Festival winner for Saving Grace) and features a cast that includes Christopher Walken, Sharon Stone, Amanda Peet and Peter Coyote.

Blu-ray Sales, June 7-13: Alice Keeps Her Head (Update)

In its second week on shelves, Alice in Wonderland was again the top-selling title on Blu-ray, according to data from Nielsen VideoScan for the week ended June 13. Martin Scorsese's Shutter Island came in a strong second, selling more than 80% as many units as Alice. From Paris with Love was third, and The Wolfman dropped to fifth place. Update: sales charts and figures added.

Smallville Season 9 Announced on Blu-ray

Warner Home Video has announced another TV season set for Blu-ray release in September, to be added to the three announced yesterday. Smallville: The Complete Ninth Season will hit store shelves on September 7. As previously reported, the release of earlier seasons is being held up by technical issues on the first one, which the studio is "trying to work through."

Bambi Diamond Collection Blu-ray in 2011

Yamaha Announces 2D Blu-ray Player, 3D Receiver

Yamaha has announced a new Blu-ray Disc player, model BD-S667. It supports BonusView and BD-Live. It is also compatible with Netflix streaming, and includes DLNA client certification. However, unlike many players announced this year, it doesn't support the Blu-ray 3D specifications. It will carry a list price of $329.95, and availability is set for the month of July. Yamaha also announced an AV receiver, model RX-V667 - which will be 3D-compatible.

Chuck, Fringe, Supernatural New Seasons on Blu-ray

Warner Home Video has announced three TV series season sets for release on Blu-ray in September. Chuck: The Complete Third Season and Supernatural: The Complete Fifth Season have a street date of September 7, whereas Fringe: The Complete Second Season is slated for a September 14 release.

Paramount Blu-ray Movies Available Day-and-date at Redbox

Paramount Home Entertainment (PHE) has decided to extend its revenue sharing license agreement with redbox, providing access to the studio's DVD and Blu-ray titles to rent at the approximately 22,000 redbox kiosk locations - on the same day they are released in the sell-through market. The deal is valid through 2011, and can be extended a further three years.

Criterion Blu-ray in September: Donen, Godard, Malick, Oshima

The Criterion Collection has announced no fewer than four major films for release on Blu-ray in September. Jean-Luc Godard will open fire on September 14, with the Nouvelle vague 1960 classic Breathless (À bout de souffle). A week later, the comedic thriller Charade (Stanley Donen, 1963) will hit store shelves. The studio will close the month with two unusual war movies: Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence (Nagisa Oshima, 1983) and the highly-anticipated The Thin Red Line (Terrence Malick, 1998).

After winning a Tony this past weekend, one has to wonder if Denzel Washington will consider abandoning Hollywood for the glamour of Broadway. The Oscar-award winning actor has had a storied career, but his latest effort The Book of Eli - which is out on Blu-ray today - did not live up to the expectations of critics, who collectively gave it a 47% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

To print it, go to the dedicated coupon website and click on the appropriate tab on the upper-right corner. This coupon is redeemable at participating retailers in the US and Canada, and expires on June 20.

3D Blu-ray Production Tools Now Available

Sony Creative Software, Inc. has announced the availability of the Blu-print 6 Blu-ray Disc authoring application and Z Depth 3D subtitle offset editing application. The upgraded Blu-print 6 offers new features, including 3D title authoring in accordance with the Blu-ray 3D spec from the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA), 3D menu and subtitle graphics, and easy MVC encoded content importing. Z Depth application generates the required offset metadata file needed for a Blu-ray 3D project, thus enabling editors to accurately position subtitles and menu graphic elements in the 3D space.

Three Kings Blu-ray Announced

Warner Home Video has announced the Blu-ray release of Three Kings, with a street date of October 12. This 1999 war movie starring George Clooney had such an unconventional cinematography that when it came out on DVD, the studio added a "do not adjust your set" disclaimer stating that the look of the film was intentional.

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced Death at a Funeral for release on Blu-ray on August 10. This Neil LaBute dark comedy is a remake of a 2007 British film of the same title. Despite its high-profile comedic cast, it got mixed reviews when it was released in theaters last April.

Stargate Universe 1.5 Blu-ray in Late July

Stargate Universe 1.5 (or SGU 1.5, for short), initially reported to come out on July 13, will finally hit store shelves on July 27. The Blu-ray will include the final 10 episodes of season one and feature an exclusive all-new survival instinct game, which challenges players to use their knowledge, intelligence and skillfulness to jump through a series of time loops in order to return to the Destiny.

The Man Who Fell to Earth Blu-ray Going Out of Print

The Criterion Collection has posted a list of titles from its catalog that are going out of print effective June 30. The list includes one Blu-ray: The Man Who Fell to Earth (Nicolas Roeg, 1976). Like The Third Man and Pierrot le fou which also went OOP recently, this was a title licensed by Studio Canal.

Marantz Announces Blu-ray 3D Players

Marantz has unveiled its hi-fi and home cinema product line for 2010. Initially announced for the UK, it features two new 3D-ready Blu-ray universal players with DLNA support (models UD5005 and UD7005). They will be available between July and August. 3D support will be added with an enabling firmare upgrade, due "before Christmas."

Amazon Runs out of Porcupine Tree Blu-ray

Anesthetize, the first Blu-ray release from progressive rock band Porcupine Tree, doesn't come out on Blu-ray until June 29, but it is already sold out at Amazon.com. The product page at the Internet retailer displays the message: "We have sold through our allocation of the Anesthetize DVD + Blu-ray Edition. The Anesthetize single-disc DVD edition [due out on June 15] is still available to order."
