Dracula (1958) 4K Blu-ray

Warner Archive, in association with Hammer Films, is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Terence Fisher's Dracula (1958), starring Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Michael Gough, Melissa Stribling, and Carol Marsh. The releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 27.

One Night Only Collector's Edition 4K Blu-ray

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced that it will release on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray Will Gluck's romantic dramedy One Night Only (2026), starring Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner, Bobby Cannavale, Molly Ringwald, and LeVar Burton. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

Gwendoline Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray

Severin Films has dated and detailed its upcoming Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray release of Just Jaeckin's Gwendoline (1984), starring Tawny Kitaen, Brent Huff, Zabou Breitman, Bernadette Lafont, and Jean Rougerie. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on November 24.

This Week on Blu-ray: August 31-September 6

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

Superman Blu-ray Anthology Coming Up

Confirming earlier reports, information from UK retailers indicates that, on June 13, Warner Home Video will release The Superman Motion Picture Anthology (1978-2006), comprised of Superman, Superman II, Superman III, Superman IV: The Quest for Peace and Superman Returns. No release details are available, other than it will reportedly be a five-disc set.

The Illusionist 2010 Announced on Blu-ray

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced The Illusionist (L'illusionniste) for Blu-ray release on May 10. This animation movie (not to be mistaken with the 2006 movie of the same title) is directed by Sylvain Chomet based on an unproduced story by Jacques Tati, and earned an Academy Award nomination in the Best Animated Feature category.

Two More Ghibli Titles on Blu-ray in the UK

Optimum Home Entertainment has announced that on May 9, it will release two more movies from Studio Ghibli on Blu-ray: Laputa: Castle in the Sky (Hayao Miyazaki, 1986) and My Neighbours the Yamadas (Isao Takahata, 1999). Going from previous Ghibli titles in the UK, they are likely to be region-locked.

Once Upon a Time in America Getting Extended Cut

The Bologna Cinematheque, through its prestigious L'Immagine Ritrovata laboratory, is going to fully restore Sergio Leone's Once Upon a Time in America and add 40 minutes of original footage to its 229-minute running time. There is no information about a Blu-ray release, in Italy or elsewhere.

Sony Blu-ray Factory in Japan Impacted by Earthquake

According to numerous reports coming from Japan, Sony factories that make among other things Blu-ray discs, have been shut down due to the 9.0 earthquake that occured outside the coast of Japan around 05:46 UTC today. The reports at this stage may not be accurate and it is not known if there are going to be any lasting impacts. As more information becomes available over the next few days and as the impact becomes more clear we will update the news.

Alien Movies Getting Separate Blu-ray releases

Early retailer information indicates that, on May 10, 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment will separately release the four Alien movies – Alien, Aliens, Alien³ and Alien: Resurrection – previously only available as part of the Alien Anthology, released in October 26.

Sony Restoration Boss Talks Taxi Driver Blu-ray

European PS3 Injunction Lifted

A civil court in The Hague, Netherlands, has lifted the preliminary injunction that had been imposed last week on PS3 consoles, causing some 300,000 units to be seized at Dutch customs. LG will now have to pay legal fees of €130,000. However, a final judgment regarding a patent dispute between LG and Sony is still pending.

The Incredibles Blu-ray Gets New Extras

Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment has revealed the release details of the Blu-ray edition of Pixar's The Incredibles, which, as previously reported, will hit store shelves on April 12. This 2 BD/DVD/Digital Copy pack will include "all the classic DVD features", plus additional, previously unavailable content.

Blu-ray Presence in Redbox Kiosks to Increase

Speaking at a technology conference, Coinstar CFO Scott Di Valerio said that Redbox is going to increase the number of Blu-ray Disc titles in its kiosks, but focusing in the "more rentable genres" such as action movies. Blu-ray penetration in Redbox kiosks will now surpass 10%. Redbox plans to add 5,000 to 6,000 new kiosks in 2011.

New Sharp 3D Blu-ray Players Shipping Now

In March, Sharp Electronics Corporation is shipping all three of the 3D wireless Blu-ray Disc players it introduced in January at CES, models BD-HP75U (MSRP $329.99), BD-HP35U (MSRP $299.99) and BD-HP25U (MSRP $249.99. All provide consumers with access to content from a wide variety of Internet sources, including Netflix, VUDU, Pandora and YouTube via Wireless LAN (the BD-HP25U requires optional Wireless LAN dongle VR-WL25).

Blu-ray Sales, Feb. 28-Mar. 6: Bambi Crowned King

The Diamond Edition of Bambi was the top-selling title on Blu-ray during the week ended March 6, according to Nielsen VideoScan First Alert. Disney's 1942 animated feature sold more BDs than the rest of the top ten put together, and was the top-selling title on packaged media overall on the strength of its BD/DVD combo sales alone. The highest-selling new release was Burlesque, which entered at number 3, behind Megamind in its first full week in stores.

Coens' True Grit Announced on Blu-ray

Paramount Home Entertainment has announced the western True Grit for Blu-ray release on June 7, in a BD/DVD/Digital Copy combo pack. This new adaptation of the novel by Charles Portis (previously brought to the screen by Henry Hathaway in 1969), was nominated for 10 Academy Awards, although it came out of the Oscar ceremony empty-handed.

Rush Moving Pictures Audio Blu-ray Delayed

According to retailer information, Rush: Moving Pictures, initially scheduled for release on April 5, will finally come out four weeks later, on May 3, on a Blu-ray/CD set.The BD will feature the album and three bonus music videos, "Tom Sawyer," "Limelight" and the previously unreleased clip "Vital Signs." Audio will be presented in a 5.1 surround sound mix supervised by the band's Alex Lifeson using the original multi-tracks (DTS-HD Master Audio and 96kHz/24-bit PCM) and in newly remastered stereo from the original analog master tapes (96kHz/24-bit PCM).

Magnolia Home Entertainment has announced I Saw The Devil (Akmareul boatda) for Blu-ray release on May 10. This Korean crime thriller stars Choi Min-sik (Oldboy) as a serial killer and Lee Byung-hun (The Good, the Bad, the Weird) as a secret agent who decides to track him down. It premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and is having a limited theatrical release this month.
