Dracula (1958) 4K Blu-ray

Warner Archive, in association with Hammer Films, is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Terence Fisher's Dracula (1958), starring Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Michael Gough, Melissa Stribling, and Carol Marsh. The releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 27.

One Night Only Collector's Edition 4K Blu-ray

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced that it will release on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray Will Gluck's romantic dramedy One Night Only (2026), starring Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner, Bobby Cannavale, Molly Ringwald, and LeVar Burton. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

Gwendoline Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray

Severin Films has dated and detailed its upcoming Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray release of Just Jaeckin's Gwendoline (1984), starring Tawny Kitaen, Brent Huff, Zabou Breitman, Bernadette Lafont, and Jean Rougerie. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on November 24.

This Week on Blu-ray: August 31-September 6

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

Undertow Blu-ray Announced

Wolfe Video has announced Undertow (Contracorriente) for Blu-ray release on June 1. This Spanish-language movie is an unusual ghost story about a married fisherman's struggles to reconcile his devotion to his male lover within his town's rigid traditions. Undertow played over 100 film festivals and won 39 awards, including Sundance's World Cinema Audience Award. It was Peru 's submission to the Academy Awards for best Foreign Film, but it didn't make the nominations short list.

Drive Angry 2D and 3D Blu-ray Announced

Summit Entertainment has officially announced that on May 31 it will release Drive Angry on Blu-ray, in two editions, 2D and 3D. Thus, this is Summit's first release using the Blu-ray 3D specification. This action movie, starring Nicolas Cage and Amber Heard, was shot natively in 3D, not converted. Stereoscopy notwithstanding, the movie flopped, drawing only $10 million at the box office.

Extended Lord of the Rings Blu-ray Officially Announced

Confirming earlier reports, Warner Home Video has officially announced the Blu-ray release of the extended version of The Lord of the Rings: The Motion Picture Trilogy for June 28. This three-movie collection will be presented in a 15-disc set (6 BDs, 9 DVDs), packaged in multi-disc elite packaging inside a premium rigid slipcase, with an SRP of $119.98. Each movie will be split across two discs. Audio will be 6.1 DTS-HD Master Audio. The Fellowship of the Ring has been remastered from the original 2k digital files.

No Strings Attached Blu-ray Announced

Paramount Home Entertainment has announced No Strings Attached for Blu-ray release on May 10, on a BD/DVD combo pack. Academy Award winner Natalie Portman and Ashton Kutcher star in this R-rated romantic comedy, directed by Ivan Reitman, that gives "a sharp and funny view of modern-day relationships," or more specifically, sex friends.

Paramount Announces Western Blu-ray Wave, Including Once Upon a Time in the West

Paramount Home Entertainment has announced no fewer than four western movies from its late-60s and early-70s catalog for Blu-ray release on May 31, in time for Father's Day: Big Jake (George Sherman, 1971), A Man Called Horse (Elliot Silverstein, 1970), Once Upon a Time in the West (Sergio Leone, 1968) and Rio Lobo (Howard Hawks, 1970).

Sony Pictures Home Entertainmenth has announced The Mechanic for Blu-ray release on May 17. This crime thriller, a remake of a 1972 movie of the same title, stars Jason Statham as an elite assassin whose next, self-imposed assignment is to eliminate those who killed his friend and mentor.

Daydream Nation Blu-ray Announced

Anchor Bay Home Entertainment has announced Daydream Nation for Blu-ray release on May 17. This independent teenage movie, dubbed by Variety as "Juno reimagined by David Lynch or a funnier Donnie Darko," premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and will have a very limited theatrical release on May 6.

Apocalypse Now Back to UK Cinemas Ahead of Blu-ray

Optimum Releasing has announced that it will release Francis Ford Coppola's acclaimed war movie Apocalypse Now in UK cinemas for a limited run of a week, starting May 27, featuring the director-approved restoration of the film. The Blu-ray will come out, in a three-disc collector's edition, on June 13.

Two Flipside Blu-ray Titles from BFI in April

BFI Video has announced two more titles as part of its Flipside label, presenting two rare and little seen films that explore changing attitudes towards sex and gender equality in 1960s Britain: Lunch Hour (James Hill, 1962) and Joanna (Mike Sarne, 1968). Both will come out on April 25, in dual-format BD/DVD editions.

Confessions Blu-ray Announced in the UK

Third Window Films has announced that on April 25 it will release Confessions (Kokuhaku). Following the critical acclaim of his previous features, Kamikaze Girls and Memories of Matsuko, genre-busting auteur Tetsuya Nakashima now reins in his impulse to create surreal candy-colored worlds full of chaos and confusion and opts instead for an intense drama throbbing with dark emotions and powered by a savage central performance.

The Tempest Blu-ray Announced

Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment has announced The Tempest for Blu-ray release on September. This modern retelling of William Shakespeare's last play is directed by Julie Taymor and stars Helen Mirren, Russell Brand and Alfred Molina. It premiered in Venice and received a limited theatrical release in December 2010.

Rumor: Kubrick's The Killing Blu-ray Coming Up

The Criterion Collection's monthly newsletter includes an illustration hinting at an upcoming, unannounced title. This time it features a poodle running with a cloud of banknotes swirling around it. Film buffs have been quick to point out that it is a reference to the withering finale of Stanley Kubrick's The Killing, which would be hence slated for a Blu-ray release in the near future.

Four Miramax Movies Coming up on Blu-ray

Early retailer information indicates that, on May 3, Echo Bridge Entertainment will release on Blu-ray four movies from the Miramax/Dimension catalog: The Crow: City of Angels, From Dusk Till Dawn, Halloween H2O and The Yards. No release details are available at the moment.

Robot Chicken: Star Wars III Blu-ray Announced

Robot Chicken makes it to high-definition disc! Warner Home Video has announced Robot Chicken: Star Wars III for Blu-ray release on July 12. This title "brazenly combines" the satirical sensibilities of Seth Green and Matthew Senreich's stop-motion comedy (featured on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim) with the Star Wars universe – among them, its creator himself, George Lucas. It will carry a list price of $19.89.

Criterion's Three Reasons Trailer: The Red Shoes

The Criterion Collection has created a new "Three Reasons" trailer, this time for a title already available: The Red Shoes, released by the studio in July 2010. This trailer expresses three reasons why, in Criterion's opinion, Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger's Technicolor tragic ode to dance and the performing arts is a must-see.

Blu-ray Sales, March 7-13: Bambi Beats Jackass (Update)

For the second week, Bambi was the top-selling title on Blu-ray, according to data from Nielsen VideoScan for the week ended March 13. Jackass 3 movie got 40% of its total disc sales from Blu-ray and was the top-selling in overall packaged media, but only second for Blu-ray. The Walking Dead: The Complete First Season performed strongly, coming in at third place. Update: Blu-ray sales percentages added.

Lord of the Rings Extended Blu-ray Details, Possible Street Date

The highly-anticipated Blu-ray release of the extended edition of The Lord of the Rings: The Motion Picture Trilogy doesn't have an official announcement yet, but retailers are revealing further release details, including special features and number of discs. Also, according to Canadian retailer Futureshop, it will come out on June 28.

Optimum Home Entertainment has announced that it will release Oliver Stone's The Doors on a Blu-ray in the UK on April 18. The "newly restored" 20th Anniversary Blu-ray will include a new documentary titled Back to the Roots, featuring interviews with Kyle McLachlan and Oliver Stone, as well as Jim Morrison: A Poet in Paris.

Hereafter Blu-ray to Benefit Japan Earthquake Relief

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Group has announced that part of the proceeds from sales of the Blu-ray and DVD of Hereafter (which streeted yesterday) will go towards relief efforts in earthquake-stricken Japan. The amount of the donation has not been disclosed, but is reported to be in the vicinity of $1 million.

The Criterion Collection has announced that it will release six films on Blu-ray in June. On June 14, it will release Insignificance (Nicolas Roeg, 1985) and The Makioka Sisters (Kon Ichikawa, 1983). A week later, it will release Kiss Me Deadly (Robert Aldrich, 1955). And finally, June 28 will see three BD titles: People on Sunday (Menschen am Sonntag; Robert Siodmak and Edgar G.Ulmer, 1930), Zazie dans le métro (Louis Malle, 1960) and Black Moon (Louis Malle, 1975).

According to information from retail giant Walmart, 20th Century Fox will follow up its Blu-ray onslaught with a wave of titles from the MGM catalog, including Some Like It Hot (Billy Wilder, 1959) for May 10. Fox proper will release The Hustler (50th Anniversary) (Robert Rossen, 1961) on May 17. Both will carry an MSRP of $34.99 and thus are likely to be presented in special-edition DigiBooks.
