Dracula (1958) 4K Blu-ray

Warner Archive, in association with Hammer Films, is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Terence Fisher's Dracula (1958), starring Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Michael Gough, Melissa Stribling, and Carol Marsh. The releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 27.

One Night Only Collector's Edition 4K Blu-ray

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced that it will release on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray Will Gluck's romantic dramedy One Night Only (2026), starring Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner, Bobby Cannavale, Molly Ringwald, and LeVar Burton. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

Gwendoline Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray

Severin Films has dated and detailed its upcoming Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray release of Just Jaeckin's Gwendoline (1984), starring Tawny Kitaen, Brent Huff, Zabou Breitman, Bernadette Lafont, and Jean Rougerie. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on November 24.

This Week on Blu-ray: August 31-September 6

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

Fox/MGM DigiBook and DVD-less Blu-ray Re-releases Coming Up

Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment (in association with MGM where appropriate) is re-releasing two dozen Blu-ray titles from its catalog using two opposite strategies. Some movies are coming out in DigiBook editions, with a list price of $34.99. On the other hand, other titles previously available only as BD/DVD combos are shedding its low-definition disc and shaving a few dollars off MSRP. There is no information as to whether the BDs themselves will be any different.

Bridge on the River Kwai Gets Non-DigiBook Blu-ray

On June 7, Sony Pictures Home Entertaiment will re-release The Bridge on the River Kwai on a regular Blu-ray edition. This classic movie directed by David Lean had been released by SPHE in November 2010 in a book edition with an accompanying DVD and a set of lobby card replicas. List price for this no-frills re-release is $19.95, or $15 less than the existing edition.

Transformers Single-Disc Blu-ray Release in April

Paramount Home Entertainment has announced that it will re-release Transformers on June 7, in a single-disc release tied in with the theatrical release of Transformers: Dark of the Moon. Michael Bay's action blockbuster had been released on BD in 2008, in a two-disc special-edition Blu-ray.

Scarface Blu-ray Announced (Update)

Universal Studios Home Entertainment has announced Scarface for Blu-ray release on September 6. Considered one of the most influential gangster films ever made, Brian De Palma's film has been "newly-restored" and will be presented with 7.1 audio for the first time. It will come in a limited-edition BD with SteelBook packaging, ten exclusive art cards, a digital copy of the film and a DVD of the original 1932 Scarface. The studio is also holding a national Scarface fan art contest. Update: preorders up; humidor gift set MSRP not a typo!

New Miramax/Dimension Blu-ray Wave from Echo Bridge

According to early retailer information, on May 10 Echo Bridge Home Entertainment will release on Blu-ray no fewer than seven movies from the Miramax/Dimension catalog: Children of the Corn III: Urban Harvest, Dracula 2000, Equilibrium, Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers, Hellraiser: Bloodline, Supercop and Texas Rangers. List price is $19.99. No disc details are available yet.

Eagle Rock Announces May-June Blu-ray Lineup

Eagle Rock Entertainment has announced its slate of Blu-ray releases for May and June. On May 10, it will release Heaven & Hell: Radio City Music Hall Live!. Two titles are due out on May 31: David Byrne: Ride, Rise, Roar and Primal Scream: Screamadelica - Live. Finally, a week later, Bad Company: Live At Wembley and Sheryl Crow: Miles From Memphis - Live at The Pantages Theatre will hit stores.

Catalog and Asian Blu-ray Wave from Vivendi

According to retailer information, Vivendi Visual Entertainment will continue releasing catalog Blu-ray titles from the Weinstein Company catalog and the Dragon Dynasty series in April-May. On April 5, it will release Miss Potter and The Nanny Diaries. Two weeks later, the studio will release The Last Legion. The Enforcer (Gei ba ba de xin, also known as Jet Li Is the Hero and My Father Is a Hero) is set for release on April 26. On May 10, The Libertine will come out. Finally, The Five Deadly Venoms (Wu du) will hit store shelves on May 17.

Captain America 1990 Coming Up on Blu-ray with Director’s Cut

The 1990 movie version of Captain America is coming up on Blu-ray in May, just in time for the theatrical release of Captain America: The First Avenger. The movie will be presented in a director's cut with 30 additional minutes of footage. According to director Albert Pyun, it will be "more character-oriented and less super hero action."

Samsung is discontinuing its existing 3D Starter Kit (model number SSG-P2100S/ZA), which contained two pairs of 3D glasses and Shrek: The Complete Collection 3D. A new 3D Starter Kit has been launched (model SSG-P3100M), which includes two pairs of glasses,the Shrek movies and also a mail-in voucher to receive the exclusive 3D Blu-ray of Megamind. The UK branch of Universal Studios Home Entertainment has announced Brian De Palma's Scarface in a "triple-play" BD/DVD/Digital Copy pack, with a release date of September 5. Three different packagings will be available: a regular Amaray, a limited-edition SteelBook and a limited-edition cigarbox-shaped box set, priced at £24.99, £29.99 and £59.99 respectively.

American: The Bill Hicks Story Announced on Blu-ray

BBC Video, in conjunction with Warner Home Video, has announced American: The Bill Hicks Story for Blu-ray release in the US on June 7, in a two-disc set. This documentary tells the life story of outlaw comic Bill Hicks using innovative filmmaking and animation techniques. It featured at the 2010 SXSW festival in Austin and will get a limited theatrical release in April (dates and venues available on the movie's official page).

New Kiosk Chain Rents Blu-ray for $1 and Less

Public Media Works Inc. has test-launched a new brand of movie rental kiosks in Southern California. This brand, named Spot, offers Blu-ray discs at a cost of $1 plus tax (same price as DVD). If two movies are rented together, the price is $1.78 , or 89 cents per movie – 41% cheaper than existing kiosks such as Redbox (which rents BDs for $1.50 a day). The kiosks have capacity for up to 1,400 discs and feature a 32-inch HD display.

MGM Home Entertainment, in conjunction with 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment, has announced Platoon for Blu-ray release on May 24, in a BD/DVD combo. This acclaimed semi-autobiographical Vietnam war drama, directed by Oliver Stone, received eight Academy Award nominations, winning four (Best Picture, Best Director, Best Sound and Best Film Editing).

Existing Miramax Blu-ray Titles Shift to Lionsgate

On May 3, all Miramax movies previously released on Blu-ray by Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment will be re-released by Lionsgate Home Entertainment. This will reassure enthusiasts who feared that some or all of these titles could go out of print. List price is generally $19.99, except for Adventureland and No Country for Old Men (Collector's Edition), which are $24.99. The studio has confirmed to Blu-ray.com that in most cases, the discs themselves will be substantively identical, with the same special features.

It will notably include a supplement in which the director will answer viewer questions about his film, which revisited the acclaimed and controversial 1998 film Happiness. All WWE Blu-rays Walmart-Exclusive for 3 Months

WWE and Vivendi Entertainment have announced the extension of their distribution deal, which includes a provision that Walmart will be the exclusive retailer for WWE Studios' films for the first 90 days of release. This exclusive deal will cover WWE Studios' next five theatrical releases and will run through 2012. The Chaperone, starring WWE Superstar Paul "Triple H" Levesque, Ariel Winter and Kevin Corrigan, recently released, is the first film of the deal.

The Fighter was easily the top-selling title on Blu-ray during the week ended March 20, according to data from Nielsen VideoScan. Paramount's Academy Award winning boxing movie got 40% of its total sales from its BD version. The Diamond Blu-ray edition of Bambi, now in its third week, dropped to second place.

At the recent Golden Globes award show, host Ricky Gervais now famously took a few cheap shots at some high profile films, including The Tourist, which is out today on Blu-ray. Typically, putting Hollywood's top actor and actress in a film together should result in instant gold, which tells you just how bad the rest of the pieces must have been for it to earn a 20% rating on RottenTomatoes. As this weeks most popular title, the film does have its fans, but those thinking about a blind buy might want to think again.

Both will be presented in BD/DVD combo packs, restored "from original 35mm elements." List price has been set at $15.99 for Dementia 13 and $19.99 for Poor Pretty Eddie.
