Blu-ray Disc Market Share Stays at 19% for Week Ended 5/7/11

Blu-ray recorded a market share of 19% for the week ending 5/7/11 and saw a much smaller drop than packaged media as a whole. Overall spending on Blu-ray was down 7.7% year on year to $22.3m, while DVD was down a much larger 29.5%. The relative strength of Blu-ray is down to The Green Hornet, which recorded 50% of all its sales on the format, and The Dilemma which saw 25% of all sales on the format.

While there were reasons to cheer, there was also some concern at the lack of longevity for Blu-ray sales of Academy Award winning titles, The King's Speech and Black Swan. Both titles recorded below average market share for the week and will be troubling for studios as Blu-ray continues to struggle outside of the core demographic.
