Blu-ray Sales, May 30-June 5: True Blood Bows on Top

Posted June 8, 2011 10:58 PM by Tony Sanchez

For the week ending June 5, True Blood: The Complete Third Season finished on top of the Blu-ray sales chart with 25% of total sales coming from the Blu-ray format. Strong sales for 'True Blood' helped HBO Home Entertainment capture the No.1 sales spot in both the Blu-ray and the overall package media sales charts as disc buyers craved sexy vampires. Band of Brothers and The Pacific are two other very popular offerings from HBO which have generated considerable revenue for Blu-ray.

Bowing at No. 2 in both the Blu-ray and the overall sales charts was the Nicolas Cage starrer Drive Angry which raced away with 46% of total unit sales derived from the HD format. Drive Angry was a box office disappoinment with a domestic total just over the $10 million mark, considering its $50 million production budget, the film would need a strong run in the home video market to recoup some of its loses.

Last week's No.1 title Gnomeo & Juliet fell two spots in the Blu-ray and overall sales charts to No. 3. Gnomeo managed 23% of total package unit sales from Blu-ray. The theatrical release of X-Men: First Class and aggressive sales promotions on catalog X-Men titles led to an X-Men resurgence in the Blu-ray sales chart. Making significant contributions to the blu-ray sales week were: X-Men Origins: Wolverine at No.5, X-Men No.6, X-Men: The Last Stand No.7, and X2: X-Men United with the No.8 sales spot.
