This Week on Blu-ray: August 31-September 6

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

Scream Factory and Shout Factory have announced their November batch of releases. They are: The Chow Yun-Fat Collection Volume One, The Family Man (2000), Women in Prison Collection (1971-1985), and The Transformers: The Movie (1986).

Ice Cream Man 4K Blu-ray

Alliance Entertainment is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Eli Roth's Ice Cream Man (2026), starring Ari Millen, Charlie Zeltzer, Shiloh O'Reilly, Sarah Abbott, and Benjamin Byron Davis. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

Blu-ray Sales: August 9-15: Project Hail Mary Fends Off Mars Attacks! in First Week

For the week that ended on August 15th, Alliance Entertainment's Project Hail Mary topped the Blu-ray-only, overall packaged media and 4K UHD charts in its debut. Second place on the Blu-ray-only chart went to Warner Bros. Home Entertainment's Mars Attacks!, which was released on 4K UHD this week, while third place went to Warner's own Mortal Kombat II in its third week.

The Rock 30th Anniversary 4K Blu-ray

Twentieth Century Studios plans to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Michael Bay's The Rock (1996) with a new combo pack release, which is expected to arrive on the market before the end of the year.

Dead Poets Society 4K Blu-ray

20th Century Studios is preparing a combo pack release of Peter Weir's Dead Poets Society (1989), starring Robin Williams, Robert Sean Leonard, Ethan Hawke, Josh Charles, and Gale Hansen. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on September 29.

Universal Studios Home Entertainment is releasing director Tom Shadyac's Liar Liar on Blu-ray on July 9th. The Jim Carrey comedy co-stars Maura Tierney, Jennifer Tilly, Swoosie Kurtz, Anne Haney, Justin Cooper and Cary Elwes, and tells the tale of a lawyer who finds himself unable to lie for 24 hours.

Nova: Australia's First 4 Billion Years Blu-ray

PBS Distribution is releasing the next title in its Nova series this June: Australia's First 4 Billion Years, an overview of the history of the planet via an exploration of the land Down Under. The 2-disc Blu-ray edition of the four-hour documentary series streets on June 25th.

Battlestar Galactica (1978) Blu-ray

Currently available as a Best Buy exclusive, Universal Studios Home Entertainment has announced the wide release of Battlestar Galactica (1978), the re-cut 124-minute version of "Saga Of A Star World," released in theaters (in Sensurround) several months after the TV pilot's broadcast premiere. The film will be available online and in retail stores on August 6th.

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment has announced the Blu-ray release of director Steve Carr's Next Friday, starring producer/screenwriter Ice Cube, Mike Epps, Justin Pierce, Tamala Jones, Don "D.C." Curry, John Witherspoon and Tommy "Tiny" Lister Jr. The stoner comedy sequel to 1995's Friday arrives on Blu-ray on September 10th.

Anchor Bay Home Entertainment and RADiUS-TWC will release on Blu-ray director Philipp Stölzl's action thriller Erased a.k.a The Expatriate (2012), starring Aaron Eckhart, Liana Liberato, and Olga Kurylenko. Madonna: The MDNA World Tour Blu-ray

Madonna has confirmed in an exclusive interview with "Extra's" Jerry Penacoli that a Blu-ray with footage from her MDNA tour will be out in September. Exact technical specs and possible supplemental features to be included with this upcoming release, however, are yet to be revealed.

The release is expected to arrive on the market later this year.

Upcoming Olive Films Titltes

Olive Films have revealed that they are planning to upgrade four titles from their catalog which were previously available only on DVD: Peter Glenville's Summer and Smoke (1961), Stuart Rosenberg's WUSA (1970), Guy Green's Once is not Enough (1975), and Gordon Douglas' Harlow (1965). All four titles will arrive on the market in July.

French distributors Mars Distribution have released a trailer for Guillaume Canet's (Tell No One, Little White Lies) latest film Blood Ties (2013), starring Clive Owen, Marion Cotillard, James Caan, Billy Crudup, and Mila Kunis. The film, which is based on a script by Canet and James Gray (The Yards), is part of the official selection of this year's Cannes Film Festival.

Abrams' Star Trek Into Darkness, but online retailer Amazon already has live pre-orders for three different Blu-ray releases. Star Trek Into Darkness opened in cinemas across the United States on May 17th, 2013.

Steven Soderbergh has claimed that this feature will be his last theatrical venture - he shot his Liberace docudrama, Behind the Candelabra, for HBO - and if the notoriously prolific director is telling the truth, then he's going out on a high note.
