This Week on Blu-ray: August 31-September 6

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

Scream Factory and Shout Factory have announced their November batch of releases. They are: The Chow Yun-Fat Collection Volume One, The Family Man (2000), Women in Prison Collection (1971-1985), and The Transformers: The Movie (1986).

Ice Cream Man 4K Blu-ray

Alliance Entertainment is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Eli Roth's Ice Cream Man (2026), starring Ari Millen, Charlie Zeltzer, Shiloh O'Reilly, Sarah Abbott, and Benjamin Byron Davis. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

Blu-ray Sales: August 9-15: Project Hail Mary Fends Off Mars Attacks! in First Week

For the week that ended on August 15th, Alliance Entertainment's Project Hail Mary topped the Blu-ray-only, overall packaged media and 4K UHD charts in its debut. Second place on the Blu-ray-only chart went to Warner Bros. Home Entertainment's Mars Attacks!, which was released on 4K UHD this week, while third place went to Warner's own Mortal Kombat II in its third week.

The Rock 30th Anniversary 4K Blu-ray

Twentieth Century Studios plans to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Michael Bay's The Rock (1996) with a new combo pack release, which is expected to arrive on the market before the end of the year.

Dead Poets Society 4K Blu-ray

20th Century Studios is preparing a combo pack release of Peter Weir's Dead Poets Society (1989), starring Robin Williams, Robert Sean Leonard, Ethan Hawke, Josh Charles, and Gale Hansen. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on September 29.

Anchor Bay Home Entertainment and The Weinstein Company will release a combo pack edition of Norwegian directors Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg's Kon-Tiki (2012), starring Pål Sverre Hagen, Anders Baasmo Christiansen, and Gustaf Skarsgård. Upcoming Eureka Entertainment Releases

British distributors Eureka Entertainment have revealed that they are planning to add six releases to their Blu-ray catalog between August and September. Amongst them are Douglas Sirk's A Time to Love and a Time to Die and The Tarnished Angels, Federico Fellini's Il Bidone, and Maurice Pialat's Van Gogh.

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release a combo pack edition of director Antoine Fuqua's action thriller Olympus Has Fallen (2013), starring Gerard Butler, Aaron Eckhart, Morgan Freeman, Dylan McDermott, Angela Bassett, and Melissa Leo. Acorn Media Announces Jack Irish, Set 1

Following their successful release of Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries: Series 1, Acorn Media and RLJ Entertainment plan to bring another hit Australian detective series, Jack Irish, to Blu-ray. The first two full-length TV movies, starring Guy Pearce as the hard- drinking detective, will be released on Blu-ray/DVD combo discs. Tentative street date is October 1.

Skyfall Named the Biggest-Selling Home Video Release in the UK

Director Sam Mendes' Skyfall is the biggest-selling home video release in the United Kingdom this year. According to data provided by Official Charts Company, the mega-blockbuster has sold over 2.8 million units on Blu-ray and DVD. In 2013, Skyfall has been the only title to sell more than 2 million units.

Upcoming Carlotta Films Releases

Amongst them are Japanese master Yasujirô Ozu's newly restored The Only Son (1936) and Tokyo Story (1953), Michael Powell's 49th Parallel (1941), and Brian De Palma's The Fury (1978).

Independent British distributors Third Window Films have revealed that they are planning to bring to Blu-ray controversial Japanese director Sion Sono's latest film Kibo no kuni a.k.a The Land of Hope (2012), starring Isao Natsuyagi, Naoko Ohtani, and Jun Murakami. The preliminary release date set by the distributors is August 12th.

U.S. Trailer for Johnnie To's Drug War

A new U.S. trailer for veteran Hong Kong director Johnnie To's Drug War (2012) has been released. Texas-based distributors Well Go USA and Variance Films are bringing the film to U.S. theaters. Drug War will be screened at the IFC Center on July 26th, and then will head to Los Angeles where it will open in select theaters on August 2.

For the week that ended on June 30th, Warner Bros' Jack the Giant Slayer remained at the top of the Blu-ray-only rankings. The adventure-fantasy has now enjoyed two weeks of strong home media sales, and this performance comes as a corrective to its disappointing theatrical run last March.

Disney Acquires Rights to Four Marvel Movies

Walt Disney Studios announced today that it has acquired the distribution rights for Marvel Studios' Iron Man, Iron Man 2, Thor and Captain America: The First Avenger. The Marvel Studios films were previously distributed by Paramount Pictures.
