Dracula (1958) 4K Blu-ray

Warner Archive, in association with Hammer Films, is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Terence Fisher's Dracula (1958), starring Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Michael Gough, Melissa Stribling, and Carol Marsh. The releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 27.

One Night Only Collector's Edition 4K Blu-ray

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced that it will release on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray Will Gluck's romantic dramedy One Night Only (2026), starring Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner, Bobby Cannavale, Molly Ringwald, and LeVar Burton. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

Gwendoline Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray

Severin Films has dated and detailed its upcoming Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray release of Just Jaeckin's Gwendoline (1984), starring Tawny Kitaen, Brent Huff, Zabou Breitman, Bernadette Lafont, and Jean Rougerie. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on November 24.

This Week on Blu-ray: August 31-September 6

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

BCI Plans First Blu-ray Release

BCI Home Entertainment has announced that they will release 'Ultimate Force' for Blu-ray on November 13th. The film stars Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) star Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic as an ex-cop who is recruited by a secret government organization to become an assassin. No specs have been announced for the release at this time.

Pixar's Cars Announced for November

HollywoodinHiDef.com is reporting that Buena Vista Home Entertainment will release Pixar's Cars for Blu-ray on November 6th. This title was delayed from June as director John Lasseter wanted to be very hands on with this release (and at that time he was busy completing Ratatouille). Now it appears that the delay will be worth it with John supervising everything from the AVC encoding to the special "Car Finder" BD-J extra.

Memoirs of a Geisha and Tekkon Kinkreet Announced

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced that 'Memoirs of a Geisha' and the anime 'Tekkon Kinkreet' will be released for Blu-ray on September 25th along with the previously announced 'Black Book' and 'Underworld: Unrated' releases. Both releases will receive the 1080p treatment with PCM audio. 'Tekkon Kinkreet' will maintain its Japanese soundtrack with English subtitles. No special features have been announced at this time.

Underworld Unrated Announced for Blu-ray

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced that they will be releasing the sci-fi film 'Underworld' in unrated form for Blu-ray on September 25th. The disc, which will feature an additional 12 minutes of footage, will be encoded at 1080p using AVC and will feature a PCM soundtrack. No special features are announced at this time.

Harry Potter and Blade Runner Boxsets Announced

Warner Brothers Home Entertainment has announced that they will be delivering Blu-ray box sets for two highly anticipated series this winter. The first is the Harry Potter boxset which will feature the first five Harry Potter films. That set will come with a collectible bookmark and trading cards, and retail for $150. The second is a Blade Runner box set, which will come out the same time as the 5-disc Blade Runner DVD set. No price has been announced at this time.

DVD International Announce Blu-ray Titles

DVD International, distributors of the popular HDScape titles, has announced they will be bringing their content to Blu-ray this fall. The discs will be authored by RADCO, are schedule to hit shelves October 30th. While the demand for scenic discs is generally not as high as movies, their $6.95 sampler disc is sure to sell plenty of copies for those looking to show off their Blu-ray systems.

Disney's Magical Blu-ray Tour

Walt Disney Home Entertainment and Panasonic have teamed up to bring "Disney's Magical Blu-ray Tour" to 18 malls across the country. The event will be set up for three-day runs and feature high definition displays where mall patrons can watch the upcoming Blu-ray releases of 'Cars' and 'Meet the Robinsons', as well as play games from both 'Pirates of the Caribbean' releases. Disney hopes this tour will bring the advantages of Blu-ray to the eyes of the general public.

New Line: First BD Title is Hairspray

New Line has reportedly told indie retailers that their soon to be released remake of the classic film 'Hairspray' will be their first high definition release. Obviously, its too early to talk about specs, but it is good to see that the studio who distributes many fan favorite movies (including 'Lord of the Rings') will get into the HD arena soon.

Sony Partners with Rentrak

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced that Rentrak will begin distributing and tracking Sony Blu-ray titles starting in September. The revenue sharing agreement, Rentrak's first agreement for high definition Blu-ray content, gives greater access to Blu-ray content for independent retailers. Rentrak will have access to over 60 Sony catalog titles, along with all future Blu-ray releases.

Horror Dated: Starz Reveals First Wave of Blu

Starz Home Entertainment has revealed their first wave of high definition titles coming exclusively to Blu-ray. On October 2nd, they will release 'Dawn of the Dead', 'Day of the Dead', 'Halloween', and 'Evil Dead II' followed the next month by 'Beowulf & Grendel' on November 6th. Specs have yet to be finalized, though sources say PCM audio is being considered.

Masters of Horror: Detailed and Dated

An advertisement in Video Business magazine has finally revealed some details about the upcoming Blu-ray release of 'Masters of Horror' from Starz Home Entertainment. The first season of the series will be released in four parts, the first two hitting store shelves on October 16th. Part Three will come November 13th, and a month later on December 11th, Part Four will be released. Still no specs, but those should be coming shortly.

Image Entertainment/Criterion Goes Exclusively Blu? (Updated)

A few months back, GalleryPlayer declared they would begin releasing their content (which includes the largest library of protected high definition images) on Blu-ray. Today, they announced a partnership with Image Entertainment (who also hold distribution rights to many Criterion Collection films) to release four Blu-ray discs. Previously, Image Entertainment has released the 'Discovery Atlas' series on both high-def formats. What is unknown, is if this signifies Image Entertainment's desire to support Blu-ray exclusively, or if this stance is specific to this agreement.

New US Version of Planet Earth

The BBC release (via Warner Brothers in the US) of 'Planet Earth' has become the highest grossing high definition release since it hit store shelves earlier this year. Now, Discover Channel, who broadcasted the series in the United States, wants to get in on the action. They will release the Americanized version of the film at the end of this month on Blu-ray, which replaces British commentator David Attenborough with actress/conservationist Sigourney Weaver.

Wings of Honneamise Announced

Bandai Visual has announced that they will be bringing the classic anime title 'Wings of Honneamise' to Blu-ray on September 11th. The disc will feature a new 1080p transfer from a restored print, as well as both PCM and Dolby TrueHD Japanese soundtracks (an English dub will also be provided in Dolby Digital). The release will be paired with a DVD, making it accessible to both Blu-ray and DVD owners.

FUNimation Goes Blu-ray Too

In an article over at IGN, anime distributor FUNimation Entertainment has revealed that they will support Blu-ray exclusively for high definition movie content. The company, most notably associated with 'Full Metal Alchemist', stated their intent to deliver content on Blu-ray by the end of the year. This decision came after 18 months of researching both formats.

Tartan Video Exclusively Blu-ray

Tartan Video has announced that they will support Blu-ray exclusively for high definition movies, and will release three of their most popular titles this fall. First up will be Paul Verhoeven's 'Black Book' and a 50th Anniversary Edition of the classic film 'The Seventh Seal' on August 27th in the UK (Black Book: September 25th in the US). A few weeks later, the thriller 'Oldboy' will be released on September 24th.

Black Book Announced for Blu-ray

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced that the Paul Verhoeven film 'Black Book' will be released for Blu-ray on September 25th, day-and-date with the DVD. Paul Verhoeven, as many of you know, has directed such classic films as 'Robocop', 'Total Recall', and 'Basic Instinct'. No specs have been announced at this time, but expect a full 1080p transfer and lossless audio.

The Hoax Put on Hold

Buena Vista Home Entertainment has revealed that they are delaying the Blu-ray release of the Richard Gere film 'The Hoax' indefinitely. No reason was given for the delay at this time. The movie is still planned for a DVD release on October 16th (the day originally scheduled for both the DVD and Blu-ray releases). Hopefully we'll get an updated release date soon for this title as Q4 release dates are firmed up.

Bug Announced for Blu-ray (Update)

Lionsgate Home Entertainment has announced that they will release the William Friedkin horror film 'Bug' for Blu-ray on September 25th, day-and-date with the DVD release. Cursed with the same theatrical release date as 'Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End', this title sparked little attention at the cinema, but on video it's sure to garner a cult following. No specs have been announced, but supplemental features include a commentary track, two featurettes, and the theatrical trailer.

Samsung Brings Two New Players This Fall

Samsung will introduce two new Blu-ray players this fall, both featuring HDMI v1.3 with the ability to pass Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio to a compatible receiver. The BD-P1400, which will retail for $549, will include support for 24fps video. The BD-P2400, which will retain for $599, will include all the features of the 1400, with addition of the HQV processor (which is currently found in the 1200).

The marketing minds of Disney, Fox, and Sony have come together and created a website dedicated to educating consumers on the advantages of Blu-ray over DVD. That website, hollywoodinhidef.com, features a blog by industry expert Scott Hettrick, a compilation of Blu-ray news from across the Internet, and information on current and future Blu-ray releases.

Paramount Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring the Nicholas Cage film Next to Blu-ray on September 25th, day-and-date with the DVD release. No specs have been released for the title, but expect a 1080p AVC video transfer with PCM audio.

A Few Good Men marches onto Blu-ray

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring the Jack Nicholson classic A Few Good Men to Blu-ray on September 18th. Featuring one of the most quoted movie lines ever, this title has proven a huge seller on DVD, and will surely be a favorite on Blu-ray. Video will be presented in 1080p and accompanied by a PCM soundtrack.

Navigational Cinema on Haunted Hill BD Release

The full schedule for the San Diego Comic-Con has been released, and an interesting detail about an upcoming Blu-ray release was buried therein. You may recall that the straight-to-video movie 'Return to the House on Haunted Hill' will be coming to Blu-ray. Well, it appears that the release will feature a Navigational Cinema experience where users will be able to "control the nightmare".

PS3 Gets $100 Price Cut

After weeks of speculation, Sony Computer Entertainment has announced that starting tomorrow, July 10th, the PlayStation 3 (PS3) will be priced at $499, a reduction of $100 from its current price. Additionally, a new 80GB model will be introduced this fall bundled with a copy of the popular off-road racing game MotorStorm. That unit will be priced at $599.

Remember That Night hits Blu-ray this September

When former Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmore and keyboardist Rick Wright decided to tour in support of Gilmore's solo album, fans of Pink Floyd were excited. When it was announced that the set list would include classic Pink Floyd hits like "Breathe" and "Echoes", fans were ecstatic. Sony Pictures will release the concert, 'Remember That Night', filmed at London's Royal Albert Hall on September 18th for Blu-ray.

The Hoax comes to Blu-ray

Miramax (via Buena Vista) has announced that they will bring the Richard Gere film 'The Hoax' to Blu-ray on October 16th, day-and-date with the DVD. The film will be presented in 1.85:1 1080p video with accompanying PCM 5.1 audio. Extras include two featurettes, a commentary with the film's producers, and some deleted and extended scenes, same as the DVD.

Delta Farce and Troy: DC for Blu-ray

Lionsgate Home Entertainment has revealed that they are bringing the Larry the Cable Guy military comedy 'Delta Farce' to Blu-ray on September 4th. A surprise move by Warner Brothers was also revealed, as they will be releasing 'Troy: Director's Cut' for Blu-ray on September 18th. This is a surprise because the theatrical version of Troy already exists on HD DVD.

Disney Brings The Invisible to Blu-ray

Buena Vista Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring the teen thriller 'The Invisible' to Blu-ray on October 16th, day-and-date with the DVD release. The disc will feature a 1080p video encode with PCM 5.1 audio. The Blu-ray will feature all the same extras as the DVD, including audio commentaries, deleted scenes, and music videos.

Sharp Announces First Blu-ray Player

Sharp Electronics has announced that they will release their first Blu-ray player, the BD-HP20S, this fall. No price has been set, but we do know some hardware specs. The player will output 1080p at 24fps (and 60fps) and supports Dolby TrueHD. Additionally, the player will come equipped with HDMI v1.3 as well as 5.1 analog outs.
