Dracula (1958) 4K Blu-ray

Warner Archive, in association with Hammer Films, is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Terence Fisher's Dracula (1958), starring Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Michael Gough, Melissa Stribling, and Carol Marsh. The releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 27.

One Night Only Collector's Edition 4K Blu-ray

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced that it will release on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray Will Gluck's romantic dramedy One Night Only (2026), starring Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner, Bobby Cannavale, Molly Ringwald, and LeVar Burton. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

Gwendoline Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray

Severin Films has dated and detailed its upcoming Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray release of Just Jaeckin's Gwendoline (1984), starring Tawny Kitaen, Brent Huff, Zabou Breitman, Bernadette Lafont, and Jean Rougerie. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on November 24.

This Week on Blu-ray: August 31-September 6

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

Lost: Season 3 on Blu-ray

Buena Vista Home Entertainment has confirmed that 'Lost: Season 3' will be coming to Blu-ray on December 11th, day and date with the DVD set. You may recall that this title was announced a few months back in a news article, before being denied by Disney. More details are to follow.

Paramount Shifts Focus to Blu-ray

On August 28th, Paramount will ship its first high definition title to include a lossless or uncompressed soundtrack - 'Blades of Glory'. This title will feature a PCM 5.1 soundtrack for the Blu-ray release, but will feature no equivalent on the HD DVD, presumably because of the smaller disc capacity. Two weeks later, Paramount will ship 'Face/Off' with extras features available in high definition, but only on the Blu-ray version, again due to space constraints.

Led Zeppelin's The Song Remains the Same for Blu-ray

Warner Home Video has announced that they will bring the Led Zeppelin classic music film 'The Song Remains the Same' to Blu-ray on November 13th. The newly remastered version of the film will feature all 14 songs from the original concert, as well as 40 minutes of bonus material. Video will be encoded at 1080p using VC-1 accompanied by a newly remixed Dolby Digital soundtrack.

Optimum Announces Blu-ray Support

Optimum Home Entertainment has announced that they will be releasing 'Wolf Creek', 'Pan's Labyrinth', and 'The Host' for Blu-ray on November 12th in the UK. Previously, Optimum only supported HD DVD, but with their recent Blu-ray announcements, it's clear that they recognize the markets are turning in Blu-ray's favor. No specs were announced at this time.

BJ's Goes Blu-ray Exclusive

BJ's Wholesale Club, which operates membership warehouses similar to CostCo and Sam's Club, will be supporting Blu-ray exclusively at all 173 locations by the fourth quarter, according to sources. Though, they will continue to sell HD DVD products on their website. This move comes only days after Target announced their support for Blu-ray, and shows the growing trend of retailers supporting Blu-ray exclusively.

Return to House on Haunted Hill Dated

Warner Home Video has announced plans to release the straight-to-video film 'Return to House on Haunted Hill' for Blu-ray on October 16th, day and date with the DVD. The film will be presented in its unrated form with a special "Navigational Cinema" extra that will allow users to control the film experience by choosing alternate outcomes. SRP has been set at $34.99.

Paramount Postpones Zodiac Indefinitely

Paramount Pictures Home Entertainment has revealed that they are postponing the release of the David Fincher thriller 'Zodiac' indefinitely. The reason cited was that Paramount wants to create a special edition version for the high definition release. We'll keep an eye on this highly anticipated hidef title.

Twilight Zone: The Movie Announced

Warner Home Video has announced that they will bring 'Twilight Zone: The Movie' to Blu-ray on October 9th. The film features the works of four great filmmakers - John Landis, Steven Spielberg, Joe Dante and George Miller - each having their own segment. No specs or extra features have been announced at this time.

Pirates 3 Announced for Blu-ray

Buena Vista Home Entertainment has announced that 'Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End' will be released for Blu-ray on December 4th, day and date with the DVD release. No technical specs have been announced at this time, though you can expect similar treatment as was given to the first two films (AVC and 24-bit PCM). Extras will be numerous on the two-dics Blu-ray release, including a special "Enter the Maelstrom" BD-J featurette, where viewers will gain an inside look at the scene.

Specs Revealed for Blade Runner at Comic Con

Warner Home Video has revealed the specs for the upcoming 5-dics Blu-ray edition of 'Blade Runner', which is to feature all five cuts of the film, including a brand new cut which director Ridley Scott is finishing in post-production right now. No price has yet to be set for the release, but it is due on store shelves December 18th.

Close Encounters of the Third Kind Revealed

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment is planning to release Steven Spielberg's 1977 sci-fi classic 'Close Encounters of the Third Kind' for Blu-ray on November 13th. This 30th Anniversary edition will feature three cuts of the film - the 1977 original cut, the 1980 special edition cut, and the 1998 director's cut. Plus, only available on Blu-ray, a storyboard-to-scene comparison to the original 1977 'Watch the Skies' featurette.

Target to Sell Blu-ray Players Exclusively

Target will begin selling the Sony BDP-S300 in its stores starting this October, marking the first time the second-largest retailer will offer a stand-alone high definition movie player. The player will be featured along with movies from Sony Pictures and Disney on aisle endcaps. Sony will be paying for the endcaps, but Target's decision to not stock HD DVD players in store is solely their own. Target will continue to sell discs for both formats.

Stanley Kubrick on Blu-ray Dated

Warner Home Video has announced that the majority of the Stanley Kubrick library is coming to Blu-ray on October 23rd. These titles include '2001: A Space Odyssey (Special Edition)', 'A Clockwork Orange (Special Edition)', 'Eyes Wide Shut (Special Edition)', 'Full Metal Jacket (Deluxe Edition)', and 'The Shining (Special Edition)'. Each will come on a BD-50 and feature a TrueHD soundtrack.

MGM Is Back with Jeepers Creepers 2

MGM will be releasing 'Jeepers Creepers 2' for Blu-ray on September 11th, according to The Digital Bits. No specs have been announced at this time. As you may recall, MGM (along with their distributor 20th Century Fox) have been on Blu-ray hiatus since AACS was cracked many months ago. It now appears Fox is ready to get back in the game.

Caligula Revealed for Blu-ray

The Digital Bits is reporting that Image Entertainment is set to release the film Caligula on Blu-ray later this year or early next, with other titles to be announced soon. If you don't know what Caligula is, don't worry, most don't. The film was financed in part by Penthouse and goes into great detail of the reported sexual deviances of Roman Emperor Gaius Julius Germanicus.

Samsung Dates/Prices Three New Players

Samsung Electronics has announced prices for their three new players expected out later this year. The BD-P1400 (which will replace the current BD-P1200) will be available in September for $549. Its bigger brother, the BD-P2400, with the Silicon Optix HQV processor, will be available in October for $649. The BD-UP5000 Blu-ray/HD DVD player will be out sometime after these players for $1,049.

Dragon Ball Z Heads to Blu-ray

FUNimation Entertainment is planning to announce the release of their first Blu-ray disc later this week at the San Diego Comic-Con. Their first title will be two Dragon Ball Z titles on the same disc - 'Broly: The Legendary Super Saiyan' and 'Broly: Second Coming' - due out November 13th. The disc will be presented in 1080p with a new 5.1 surround sound mix.

Denon Debuts New Blu-ray Player

Denon Electronics announced today that they will ship two Blu-ray products this fall. The DVD-3800BDCI is a Profile 1.1 Blu-ray player, capable of decoding all approved audio codecs (including Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio) as well as play Profile 1.1 content (including Picture-in-Picture). It will also be the first player to have a 10-bit Silicon Optix Realta processor which presents outstanding video playback for both Blu-ray and DVD. The player will retail for $1,999.

Bram Stoker's Dracula Announced

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced that they will be bringing 'Bram Stoker's Dracula' to Blu-ray on October 2nd. Considered one of the best Dracula movies of all time, the feature will be presented in 1.85:1 1080p video and PCM audio. No extras have been announced at this time, though expect many, if not all, from the DVD to be ported over.

Questar Goes Blu-ray Exclusive

Questar, Inc. has announced that they will be supporting Blu-ray exclusively, beginning with their first high definition releases scheduled to debut this fall. The titles include 'Rudy Maxa's Europe to the Max', 'The Enchanted Pacific to the Max' and a yet to be announced PBS nature series title. No specs have been given at this time.

Razor Digital Exclusively Blu-ray

Razor Digital has announced that they will be supporting Blu-ray exclusively, and will release four IMAX titles for Blu-ray on November 13th. Those titles include 'Africa: The Serengeti', 'Alaska: Spirit of the Wild', 'Australia: Land Beyond Time' and 'Antarctica: An Adventure of a Different Nature'. More titles are promised if these sell well.

Tartan Update and US Release

A little over a week ago, Tartan Video announced their exclusive support of Blu-ray and the release of three titles, 'Black Book', 'The Seventh Seal', and 'Oldboy'. Today we have an update on some specs for these UK releases, as well as a US release date for Oldboy. The big news is that Tartan has announced that all their releases will be region free.

Flashdance Postponed

Those eager to view 'Flashdance' in all its high definition glory will have to wait a bit longer, as Paramount Home Entertainment has revealed that they have indefinitely postponed the release. No reason was given for the delay, which was originally scheduled for September 18th, and no other titles should be affected.

Reign Over Me Announced

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced that they will be bringing the Adam Sandler and Don Cheadle post 9-11 drama 'Reign Over Me' to Blu-ray on October 9th, day and date with the DVD release. Specs have yet to be announced, but expect 1080p video with PCM audio. Special features should be similar to those found on the DVD.

The Reaping Comes to Blu-ray

Warner Home Video has announced that they are bringing the Hillary Swank thriller 'The Reaping' to Blu-ray on October 16th, day-and-date with the DVD release. The title will be presented on a BD-25 using VC-1 video encoding and include a Dolby TrueHD soundtrack. Extras include four featurettes and an Anna Sophia Robb scary story.

Warner Home Video has announced that they will bring the Halle Berry thriller 'Gothika' to Blu-ray on September 25th. Video will be encoded using VC-1 at 1080p, and will be accompanied by a Dolby Digital 5.1 audio track. Extras will mirror that of the two-disc DVD, which include commentary, making-of featurettes, a music video, and a trailer.

Warner Home Video has announced that they will be bringing three classic westerns to Blu-ray on September 25th. The three titles include 'Wild Bunch', 'Wyatt Earp', and 'Gods and Generals'. 20 Million Miles to Earth Hits Blu-ray

Entertainment in Video (UK) has announced that they will be releasing their first wave of Blu-ray titles on August 13th. Their first seven releases feature three titles already on Blu-ray in the US ('The Departed', 'Phantom of the Opera', and 'Million Dollar Baby'), two HD DVD exclusive titles in the US ('Brokeback Mountain' and 'Lucky Number Slevin') and two titles eagerly awaited for by Blu-ray fans ('Gangs of New York' and 'The Crow').
