NEC Electronics has finalized their new EMMA 3P SoC for Blu-ray playback, and are now shipping samples. The two-core chip - which features a 655MIPS 64-bit VR5500 and MIPS Technologies Inc's 457MIPS 32-bit CPU - supports dual-screen playback from all three approved Blu-ray video codecs.
The chip already supports playback of both Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD audio formats, and plans are underway to integrate DivX into the chip at a later date. It also supports HDMI and Ethernet connections.
Sample shipments began on Friday for $118. Volume production is expected to ramp up to 300,000 units a month by August.
