Dracula (1958) 4K Blu-ray

Warner Archive, in association with Hammer Films, is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Terence Fisher's Dracula (1958), starring Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Michael Gough, Melissa Stribling, and Carol Marsh. The releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 27.

One Night Only Collector's Edition 4K Blu-ray

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced that it will release on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray Will Gluck's romantic dramedy One Night Only (2026), starring Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner, Bobby Cannavale, Molly Ringwald, and LeVar Burton. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

Gwendoline Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray

Severin Films has dated and detailed its upcoming Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray release of Just Jaeckin's Gwendoline (1984), starring Tawny Kitaen, Brent Huff, Zabou Breitman, Bernadette Lafont, and Jean Rougerie. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on November 24.

This Week on Blu-ray: August 31-September 6

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

Race to Witch Mountain Gets UK BD Release

Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment has announced that it will release 'Race to Witch Mountain' on Blu-ray in the United Kingdom on August 24, day-and-date with the DVD. This will be the first Disney UK release to include a digital copy of the movie, as has long been the norm for the studio's new releases in the US.

BD Player Production Cost to Fall to $50 in 2010

Taiwan-based disc drive makers expect production costs of BD players to gradually drop to US$50 in 2010, according to local industry sources. These same sources say that currently the production cost of a BD player starts at approximately $100, with pick-up heads and chipsets accounting for 50% and 25% respectively.

Sony Launches Real-time Movie Database on BD-Live

In September, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will unveil MovieIQ, its latest BD-Live feature. This will give Sony Blu-ray fans access to a real-time, continuously-updated movie database, with scene-by-scene cast and crew data, music and soundtrack information, and trivia. Every new and major catalog Blu-ray Disc release down the line from the studio will support this feature.

Blu-ray Compatible Popcorn Hour C-200 Announced

Syabas, makers of the popular Popcorn Hour A-110, have announced the Popcorn C-200, an Internet set-top box that streams digital content from the Internet or its internal hard drive to your television set and home stereo. One of its new features is the ability to add a Blu-ray drive with full support for Blu-ray navigation and Blu-ray Live.

Hannah Montana Blu-ray Gets Detailed

Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment has announced the special features for the upcoming Blu-ray release of 'Hannah Montana: The Movie', which is due to hit store shelves on August 18th, day-and-date with the DVD release. This three-disc set - which includes a DVD and digital copy of the film along with the Blu-ray - will be presented in 1.85:1 1080p AVC accompanied by a lossless/uncompressed soundtrack.

UK to Let the Right One In on Blu-ray

Momentum Pictures has announced that they will bring the critically acclaimed Swedish horror film 'Let the Right One In' to Blu-ray on August 3rd, day-and-date with the DVD release. Technical specs have not been announced at this time. Special features include audio commentary with director Tomas Aldredson and writer John Ajvide Linqvist, as well as deleted scenes.

BD Sales Information: June 8-14 (Update)

The commercial and critical hit 'Gran Torino', starred and directed by Clint Eastwood, was the clear winner in Blu-ray sales for the week ended June 14, according to Nielsen VideoScan First Alert. Following far behind was another new release, 'The International'. The previous week's top seller, 'Defiance', dropped to number 5.

Bollyblu: Two Tamil Films on BD for June

Ayngaran International has announced two Tamil action-oriented films on Blu-ray for the last week of June: 'Kuruvi' and 'Pokkiri'. 'Kuruvi' will be presented in 2.35:1 1080p AVC video, taken from the Digital Intermediate, accompanied by an uncompressed 5.1 PCM Tamil track, with English subtitles. Region coding is ABC (free). No details are available for 'Pokiri'.

On June 16, 2009, Paramount released several new features to the Transformers Blu-ray BD-Live page, some of which tie in with the upcoming theatrical release of Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen and others that add more exclusive content that take viewers deeper into the making of the original Transformers.

BFI Brings Three Lost British Films to Blu-ray

The British Film Institute (BFI) has announced that it will release on Blu-ray three films directed by Jane Arden and Jack Bond: 'Separation' (1968), 'The Other Side of the Underneath' (1972) and 'Anti-Clock' (1979), on July 13, day-and-date with the DVD. These films have remained unseen since Arden committed suicide in 1982.

The Accidental Husband Sees German BD Release

The German subsidiary of Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment has announced the Blu-ray release of 'The Accidental Husband' on August 13, day-and-date with the DVD. This romantic comedy starring Uma Thurman won't be seeing a US theatrical release any time soon, after its distributor filed for bankruptcy.

Miike's Audition Special-Edition BD in October

Shout Factory is releasing Takashi Miike's cult movie 'Audition' on Blu-ray in October (the specific week is still to be confirmed). No audio or video specifications are available, but it will be a double-disc edition and will feature the uncut version, in a new high-definition transfer from the internegative, with a fresh digital stereo soundtrack.

Wolverine Blu-ray Gets October Date in UK and France

In an early announcement to retailers, it has been revealed that 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment is set to release 'X-Men Origins: Wolverine' on Blu-ray in the United Kingdom on October 19. In turn, the unofficial release date for France is October 29. There is no information on audio or video specifications or special features.

Requiem for a Dream & Crank 2 for September

Lionsgate Home Entertainment have announced that they will bring 'Requiem for a Dream' to Blu-ray on September 8th. On the same day, they will release 'Crank 2: High Voltage', day-and-date with the DVD release. For both releases, video will be presented in 1080p AVC accompanied by 7.1 DTS-HD Master Audio soundtracks.

International Home Video Slumps, Despite 4x BD Growth

Media analysis firm Screen Digest has published a rather gloomy report on the global video business in 2008. International revenue (that is, global revenue excluding North America) was $26.4 billion, of which sales accounted for $18.1 billion, 4.7% down from 2007. International BD sales increased fourfold, for $482 million.

Earth Blu-ray from Disney in September

Disneynature, the Walt Disney Company's label specialized in big-screen nature documentaries, is set to release its first Blu-ray on September 1, day-and-date with the DVD: the BBC documentary feature 'Earth'. Video will be presented in 1.78:1 1080p, and audio will be 48 kHz/24 bit DTS-HD Master Audio.

National Geographic Collection Announced for Blu-ray

National Geographic in conjunction with Warner Home Video has announced that they will bring the 'National Geographic Ultimate High Definition Collection' to Blu-ray on September 29th, exclusively to Blu-ray. The set will feature six National Geographic Blu-ray titles, including 'Atmospheres: Earth, Air & Water', 'Relentless Enemies', 'Kingdom of the Blue Whale', 'Rhino Rescue', 'Extreme', and 'Journey to the Edge of the Universe'.

MGM Re-Announces Spinal Tap Blu-ray

MGM Home Entertainment in conjunction with 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment have announced that they will bring 'This is Spinal Tap' to Blu-ray on July 28th. Originally scheduled for a January 20th release, famous mockumentary will be presented in 1.85:1 1080p AVC accompanied by a 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack.

The Last House on the Left Remake on Unrated Blu-ray

Universal Studios Home Entertainment has announced that it will release the 2009 remake of the Wes Craven horror classic 'The Last House on the Left' on Blu-ray on August 18, day-and-date with the DVD. The disc will be a BD50 and will include both the R-rated theatrical cut and the unrated cut, four minutes longer. Audio will be 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio, with English, French or Spanish subtitles.

Criterion September BDs: Pierrot le Fou, Monterey

The Criterion Collection has announced two titles for release on September 22: Jean-Luc Godard's masterpiece 'Pierrot le fou', and 'The Complete Monterey Pop Festival'. 'Pierrot le fou' will be presented in 2.35:1 AVC video, with a mono PCM soundtrack. 'The Complete Monterey Pop Festival' will be a two-disc set. Joint Rebate Program for Summit's Knowing and Push

Summit Home Entertainment has positioned 'Knowing' and 'Push', its two new Blu-ray titles coming up on July 7, to support each other in sales. To do it, the studio is using cross-promotion and a rebate program: consumers who buy both titles can get $5 back by mail. Thus, Summit executives hope to improve the titles' chances of success in the tough economic environment.

Blu-ray Gaining Traction in Australia

Recent Blu-ray Disc player price reduction in Australia have dramatically increased consumer adoption, according to new reports. They have found that 5% of Australian households now have a Blu-ray Disc player, and that some Blu-ray titles are maintaining as much as a 20% share for new releases. The new reports show a welcome change from the relatively slow adoption rates of just a year ago.

Philips Announces Entry-level Blu-ray Player for China

Philips has announced that they will bring an entry-level Blu-ray Disc player to China in order to better compete with the budget minded CBHD format. Currently, the format - which is an offspring of HD DVD - only has two manufacturers supporting it and one Hollywood studio. Philips hopes that by releasing a player closer to the price of CBHD players, it will sway consumers on the edge about which high definition format to support.

Valkyrie Tops UK Blu-ray Sales Chart

During the week of June 8 – June 14, Fox's 'Valkyrie' was the top-selling Blu-ray in the United Kingdom, followed by Lionsgate's 'My Bloody Valentine 3-D'. Warner's 'The Curious Case of Benjamin Button' got third place. The top seller for the previous week, 'Slumdog Millionaire', stayed strong at number 4.

Mid-September Catalog Wave from Paramount

Marantz Releases High-end BD/SACD Player in Japan

Marantz has announced the imminent launch of its high-end Blu-ray player, the UD9004. It will support DVD, BD and SACD (but not DVD-Audio). It will feature a 10-bit Silicon Optix REALTA video processor, 14-bit video DAC, an SD card reader, RS-232 control interface, and support for BD-Live. It will be available in Japan in July for 577,500 Yen (just under $6,000).
