Dracula (1958) 4K Blu-ray

Warner Archive, in association with Hammer Films, is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Terence Fisher's Dracula (1958), starring Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Michael Gough, Melissa Stribling, and Carol Marsh. The releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 27.

One Night Only Collector's Edition 4K Blu-ray

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced that it will release on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray Will Gluck's romantic dramedy One Night Only (2026), starring Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner, Bobby Cannavale, Molly Ringwald, and LeVar Burton. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

Gwendoline Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray

Severin Films has dated and detailed its upcoming Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray release of Just Jaeckin's Gwendoline (1984), starring Tawny Kitaen, Brent Huff, Zabou Breitman, Bernadette Lafont, and Jean Rougerie. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on November 24.

This Week on Blu-ray: August 31-September 6

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

A Serious Man on Blu-ray in February

Universal Studios Home Entertainment has announced 'A Serious Man' for release on Blu-ray on February 9, 2010. 'A Serious Man', the latest movie by the Coen brothers, centers around a physics professor who, as his life falls apart before his eyes, consults three different rabbis for answers. This BD will be a single-sided, non-flipper BD50.

Studio Canal Preparing More Blu-ray Titles for Cinephiles

According to the French media publication Ecran total, Studio Canal will release its third wave of Blu-ray titles in early 2010, which includes some acclaimed movies by major filmmakers: 'Mulholland Drive' (David Lynch, 2001), 'Peeping Tom' (Michael Powell, 1960), 'That Obscure Object of Desire' (Luis Buñuel, 1977), and 'Grand Illusion' (Jean Renoir, 1937).

Computer animation has allowed storytellers to create fantastic dream worlds where imaginations can fly through the air just as easily as they can converse under water. Rarely is the technology used to manifest nightmares of post-apocalyptic war zones, an unfortunate result of incorrect labeling of CG as always having to be child friendly. Today's Blu-ray release of ‘9' is an excellent example of a more adult focused animated film, and it goes a long way to change that stereotype.

Ripley's Daughter Gets Alien Blu-ray as Xmas Gift

The 'Alien' tetralogy is still unannounced on Blu-ray, but one lucky person already has it at home - Sigourney Weaver has revealed that she just gave the discs to her 19-year-old daughter as a "surprise Christmas present." Previously, the New York-born actress had also said she had recorded new commentaries for all four movies.

An early announcement to retailers indicates that Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 'Breaking Bad: The Complete Second Season' on Blu-ray on March 9, 2010. There is no information on special features or technical specifications at this time. Update: 'Breaking Bad: The Complete First Season' (which SPHE had released in March 2009 in standard definition only) is up for preorder as well, also with a release date of March 9, 2010.

National Entertainment Media has announced 'Motherhood' for Blu-ray release on February 23, 2010. This comedy stars Uma Thurman as a stay-at-home mom of two who must plan a birthday party, deal with her scatter-brained husband, save her car from being towed, and write an essay for a parenting magazine before deadline.

Law Abiding Citizen Unrated Blu-ray Announced

Anchor Bay Entertainment has announced 'Law Abiding Citizen' for Blu-ray release on February 16, 2010. 'Law Abiding Citizen', starring Gerard Butler and Jamie Foxx, is a thriller about a brilliant sociopath who orchestrates a series of high-profile murders that grip the city of Philadelphia - all from inside his jail cell - and the prosecutor assigned to his case who realizes he is the only one who can end the reign of terror. The BD will exclusively feature an unrated director's cut of the movie.

Blu-ray Sales, December 14-20: A Blu Hangover

Warner Home Video's comedy blockbuster 'The Hangover' was also the top-selling title on Blu-ray during the week ended December 20, according to Nielsen VideoScan First Alert. 'Inglourious Basterds', the war movie directed by Quentin Tarantino, came in second. The family title 'G-FORCE' entered at number 4.

Cirque Du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant Blu-ray Announced

Universal Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring 'Cirque Du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant' to Blu-ray on February 23rd. The film, which was directed by Paul Weitz of 'American Pie' fame, bombed at the box office, only grossing $14M in domestic receipts. For this release, video will be presented in 1080p VC-1 accompanied by a 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack.

Specialised site TV Shows on DVD has the scoop on the release date and edition details for 'Mad Men: Season Three', which explores the "glamorous and ego-driven Golden Age of advertising, where everyone is selling something, and nothing is ever what it seems." Studio Statement on Highlander Season One Blu-ray

In response to the concerns voiced by the first buyers of the Blu-ray edition of 'Highlander: Season One' (namely, that this was a 720p upconvert of a standard-definition source), Davis-Panzer has sent a statement (as a comment to blu-ray.com's news post of December 15), clarifying the production process for this title. In the studio's opinion, "the critiques about the quality of the Highlander Blu-ray experience seem to be due to a lack of awareness regarding HD/Blu-ray technology."

This offer expires today at 6 p.m. PST, or when stock runs out. The price history for this title shows that the cheapest it has been is $57.95, and then for a limited time as well. Unrivaled Announced for Blu-ray Release

Lionsgate Home Entertainment has announced that they will release the film 'Unrivaled' to Blu-ray on March 16th. The film features mixed martial arts stars Rashad "Sugar" Evans, Nate "The Great" Marquardt, Forrest Griffin and Keith "The Dean of Mean" Jardine. Technical specs have not been announced at this time.

Typically, the week before Christmas lacks big name releases due to studios admission that the majority of holiday shopping has already taken place, and there is no room for last minute purchases like a new Blu-ray release. In fact, the week after Christmas is typically when releases start picking up again, with studios hoping to cash in on the inevitable gift card purchases following the festivities. It is because of this that Sony's decision to push the Blu-ray release of 'District 9' up a week is curious, but we are very thankful we can pick up this title today (or at least find it under the tree on Friday).

Oppo Preparing Lower-Cost Blu-ray Player

Oppo Digital, the maker of the acclaimed but pricy BDP-83 Blu-ray player, has announced on its Twitter page: "We will be announcing a lower-cost Blu-ray player in early January 2010." There is no information regarding technical details or specific pricing at this time, but people interested are encouraged to visit the company's website "around that time" (presumably coinciding with CES) to learn more.

Universal Announces Couples Retreat Blu-ray

Universal Studios Home Entertainment has announced 'Couples Retreat' for release on Blu-ray on February 9, 2010. This marital-therapy comedy starring Vince Vaughn grossed over $107 million domestically, making it Universal's second-biggest movie this year. This will not be a "flipper" BD/DVD release, although it will include a digital copy on disc.

Wal-Mart, Best Buy Pushing Blu-ray Players for Xmas

This week, Wal-Mart and Best Buy have launched aggressive promotions on their own brand Blu-ray players. Like it did in Black Friday, Wal-Mart is offering the Magnavox MB500MG1F player for $78. Best Buy, in turn, is offering the Insignia NS-WBRDVD for $119.99. The Magnavox is a BonusView player, whereas the Insignia supports BD-Live, Netflix streaming and wireless connectivity.

Robert Rodriguez: Mexico Trilogy on Blu-ray in 2010

Robert Rodriguez has confirmed that all three movies from his "Mexico Trilogy" –or "Mariachi Trilogy"– ('El Mariachi', 'Desperado' and 'Once Upon a Time in Mexico') will be released in 2010 and that he's been personally involved in the project. At this early stage there is no information as to whether the titles will be released individually or as part of a trilogy box set.

IP Control for Sony Blu-ray Megachanger

The Sony BDP-CX7000ES 400-disc Blu-ray Disc megachanger (part of Sony's ES high-end product line) has now IP control, thanks to a new firmware version. IP control is much faster than the more usual RS232 connection, and makes for faster visualization of disc metadata on touch panels from companies like Crestron and AMX.

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced 'The Damned United' for release on Blu-ray on February 23, 2010. This movie is based on the incredible true story of soccer manager Brian Clough and his 44 controversial days at the helm of Leeds United. Release details mirror those of the UK edition, released in August 2009 and reviewed by blu-ray.com.

Wal-Mart Blu-ray Catches up with Best Buy

According to the NPD Group, Wal-Mart has now caught up with Best Buy in Blu-ray Disc software market share, thanks to its aggressive merchandising of the format during the fourth quarter of the year. Best Buy is losing the dominant position it has been holding for all the existence of high-definition optical media.

Warner Announces Blu-ray for The Informant!

Warner Home Video has announced that it will release 'The Informant!' on Blu-ray on February 23, 2010. This will be the first title under WHV's new policy of including a DVD and a digital copy with all the studio's new releases. 'The Informant!' is directed by Steven Soderbergh and stars Matt Damon, and tells the true story of a company VP who became an informant for the US government in a price-fixing investigation.

For this film, Duff plays a suicidal teen whose new love interest quickly changes her outlook on life. Video will be presented in 2.35:1 1080p accompanied by a 5.1 Dolby TrueHD soundtrack.
