Digital Playground Boss Believes in Blu-ray Endurance, Cautiously Supports 3D

During an interview with the technology site ConceivablyTech, adult entertainment baron Joone said that Digital Playground will support 3D, although he reckons that the format is still two or three years away from mass penetration. He also remarked that Blu-ray sales are increasing steadily, and that there is "no reason to believe Blu-ray Disc will die anytime soon."

One of the reasons why Joone thinks optical media are here to stay is quite simple: you can't share downloads, while a disc is "just like a book. You can give it to a friend. You can't do that with a digital version." Content for the iPhone, on the other hand, has the advantage of a level of privacy that the TV and now the PC cannot offer.

Regarding 3D, Joone had high praise for the enhanced viewing enjoyment, comparing it to going from "stereo sound to Dolby 5.1." However, he questioned whether the public will buy now a 3D set if they just bought an HDTV; therefore mass adoption is in his opinion at least "2 to 3 years away," by which time 3D TVs will be available for under $1,000. Nevertheless, he said Digital Playground "will support it," although no specific release plans were mentioned.
