Dracula (1958) 4K Blu-ray

Warner Archive, in association with Hammer Films, is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Terence Fisher's Dracula (1958), starring Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Michael Gough, Melissa Stribling, and Carol Marsh. The releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 27.

One Night Only Collector's Edition 4K Blu-ray

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced that it will release on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray Will Gluck's romantic dramedy One Night Only (2026), starring Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner, Bobby Cannavale, Molly Ringwald, and LeVar Burton. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

Gwendoline Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray

Severin Films has dated and detailed its upcoming Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray release of Just Jaeckin's Gwendoline (1984), starring Tawny Kitaen, Brent Huff, Zabou Breitman, Bernadette Lafont, and Jean Rougerie. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on November 24.

This Week on Blu-ray: August 31-September 6

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

James and the Giant Peach Blu-ray Dated

An early announcement to retailers indicates that Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment is set to release Henry Selick's animated movie James and the Giant Peach on August 3. No release details are available at the moment, other than the edition will consist of two discs (which might very well be a BD and DVD).

To celebrate the release of Sir Ridley Scott's latest film Robin Hood, May has now been officially designated "Robin Hood month" in the city of dreams, Nottingham. Lionsgate Home Entertainment has announced a set of catalog movies for release on Blu-ray on July 27 to tie in with the theatrical release of Sylvester Stallone's The Expendables: Johnny Handsome, Lock Up, Rambo: Extended Cut (with 9 minutes of additional footage) and Rambo: The Complete Collector's Set (including First Blood, Rambo: First Blood Part II, Rambo III and the original, theatrical-cut BD release of Rambo).

Ponyo Announced on Blu-ray in the UK

Optimum Home Entertainment has announced that on June 7, it will release the animated movie Ponyo on a Blu-ray/DVD combo edition, as the first title in the studio's Studio Ghibli Collection. At the moment there is no information regarding technical specs (especially audio codecs used for each language). A limited deluxe edition, in a Digipak with a sticker sheet and a set of artcards, will also be released.

Two Corman Cult Classics on Blu-ray in July

Shout! Factory has officially announced two "science-fiction shockers" on July 20 as part of its Roger Corman's Cult Classics collection: Forbidden World (in a 2-disc BD/DVD edition) and Galaxy of Terror. Forbidden World will include the R-rated theatrical cut in a high-definition transfer from the interpositive film elements, and the never-before-seen, unrated director's cut (in standard definition, full-frame video).

Eureka Entertainment has announced Profound Desires of the Gods on Blu-ray for June 21, as part of the studio's Masters of Cinema series, in an exclusive digital restoration. The culmination of Shôhei Imamura's extraordinary examinations of the fringes of Japanese society throughout the 1960s, Profound Desires of the Gods was an 18-month super-production which failed to make an impression at the time of its release, but has since risen in stature to become one of the most legendary - albeit least seen - Japanese films of recent decades.

1981 Clash of the Titans Gets Non-Digibook Blu-ray

Warner Home Video has announced that, from May 25, the mythological fantasy/adventure film Clash of the Titans (released in March in a Digibook edition) will be available on a Blu-ray edition with a standard BD case. Release details are unchanged (except for the printed content). There are no plans to discontinue the first edition.

The Simpsons Season 13 Blu-ray Coming Up

According to specialized site TV Shows on DVD, 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment is set to release The Simpsons: The Thirteenth Season on Blu-ray on August 24. It will be presented in three discs. Video will be in the original 1.33:1 aspect ratio. The only special feature announced so far is the inclusion of audio commentaries on all 22 episodes.

In its second week, Avatar was once again the clear Blu-ray top-seller during the week ended May 2, according to Nielsen VideoScan. Fox's blockbuster outsold the number-two title, Universal's new release It's Complicated, by 16 to one, and moved nearly three times as many units as the rest of the top 20 put together. BVA Publishes 2010 Yearbook

Today, the British Video Association (BVA) published its 2010 Yearbook, with a statistical analysis of the UK's audiovisual sector and providing comprehensive insights into the impact of new and evolving delivery channels on the home entertainment market. This values the entire home entertainment sector at over £2.5 billion, split between retail at £2.196 billion and rental at £415 million.

Warner Expands DVD2Blu Program, Now Starting at $4.95

Responding to the extraordinary growth of Blu-ray set-top hardware, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Group has expanded its DVD2Blu upgrade program. 90 of WHV's titles are now available to upgrade starting at $4.95. When this program launched last year, upgrade prices started at $7.95.

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment UK has announced Did You Hear About the Morgans? for Blu-ray release on May 24. This is a comedy about a New York estranged couple (played by Sarah Jessica Parker and Hugh Grant) who, after witnessing a crime, is forced to hide in a small town in Wyoming. It made $29 million at the box office.

Date Change for Percy Jackson Blu-ray

Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment has informed that the Blu-ray release of the action/adventure movie Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief, initially scheduled for June 22, will now hit store shelves a week later, on June 29. Edition details and special features are unchanged.

Lebanon Theatrical Release

On May 14, Metrodome Films is releasing Lebanon in UK theaters. This movie, directed by Samuel Maoz, won the Golden Lion Award at the 2009 Film festival, thus becoming the first film from Israel to win such an award. It is a personal look at the First Lebanon War from the inside of an Israeli tank dispatched to search a bombarded hostile town.

Avatar Sells 4 Million Blu-ray Discs in 10 Days

Avatar isn't done breaking records. During an interview with Fox News' Neil Cavuto, News Corp. Chairman and CEO Rupert Murdoch revealed that James Cameron's science-fiction epic has sold "10 million DVDs in 10 days, the highest ever, 40 percent of it in Blu-ray at $24, which is, again, an all-time record."

Usually, titles from The Criterion Collection are first officially announced and then come up for preorder. But this time, the opposite has happened and five major titles are apparently coming soon from the studio: Antichrist (Lars Von Trier, 2009); The Darjeeling Limited (Wes Anderson, 2007); The Seven Samurai (Akira Kurosawa, 1954); The Thin Red Line (Terrence Malick, 1998); and Videodrome (David Cronenberg, 1982).

Universal Studios Home Entertainment has announced Greenberg for release on Blu-ray on July 13. Greenberg is a comedy directed by Noah Baumbach and starring Ben Stiller as a New Yorker in search of a place to restart his life who agrees to house sit for his brother in Los Angeles. This movie will be presented in a single-sided, non-flipper BD50.

Anchor Bay entertainment has announced Operation: Endgame for release on Blu-ray on July 27. Operation: Endgame (previously titled Rogues Gallery) is an action thriller that centers around two rival teams of government assassins, who work out of a top-secret underground facility. Anchor Bay Films had acquired this film in February with a view to a third-quarter theatrical release, but it is going straight to video instead.

Our Family Wedding Announced on Blu-ray

Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment has announced that on July 13 it will release Our Family Wedding, a comedy about the culture clash that ensues when a Mexican-American woman (America Ferrera) marries an African-American man (Lance Gross). A digital copy of the movie will be included with this Blu-ray.

MGM Home Entertainment, in conjunction with 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment, has announced the Blu-ray release of the comedy Hot Tub Time Machine, with a street date of June 29, barely three months after it opened in theaters. The Blu-ray will include the R-rated theatrical cut, and an unrated version with over 10 additional minutes of unrated footage not seen in theaters. A digital copy will also be included.

HBO Home Entertainment, in conjunction with Warner Home Video, has announced the Blu-ray release of Bored to Death: The Complete First Season. This three-disc season set has a street date of September 14, just before the premiere of the second season. This comedy series stars Jason Schwartzman as a writer who, after a breakup, decides to become "the Sam Spade of Brooklyn."

According to the 2010 Consumer Technology Household Online Penetration Study from research company The NPD Group, the percentage of households with a Blu-ray player nearly doubled since last year, going from just 6% in 2009 to 11% in 2010. Key factors behind this increase were deep discounting during the 2009 holiday season, and the broadening penetration of HDTV (64% of households now have a flat-panel TV).
