Dracula (1958) 4K Blu-ray

Warner Archive, in association with Hammer Films, is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Terence Fisher's Dracula (1958), starring Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Michael Gough, Melissa Stribling, and Carol Marsh. The releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 27.

One Night Only Collector's Edition 4K Blu-ray

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced that it will release on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray Will Gluck's romantic dramedy One Night Only (2026), starring Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner, Bobby Cannavale, Molly Ringwald, and LeVar Burton. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

Gwendoline Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray

Severin Films has dated and detailed its upcoming Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray release of Just Jaeckin's Gwendoline (1984), starring Tawny Kitaen, Brent Huff, Zabou Breitman, Bernadette Lafont, and Jean Rougerie. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on November 24.

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

Lionsgate has announced that it will release Open House on Blu-ray on Blu-ray on August 3. This independent horror movie of the house-invasion sub-genre was shot using the Red One camera, and premiered at the 2010 Tribeca Film Festival.

Warner Home Video has announced Cop Out: Rock Out with Your Glock Out Edition for release on Blu-ray on July 20 in a BD/DVD/Digital Copy combo pack. This buddy movie, starring Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan, was the first film that Kevin Smith directed but did not write. It will feature WB's Maximum Movie Mode, here redubbed "Maximum Comedy Mode."

Classic concerts from some of rock's greatest acts are getting the high-def treatment this summer. Eagle Rock Entertainment will release The Shadows: The Final Tour on June 15, followed a week later by Emerson, Lake & Palmer: Live At Montreux 1997 and The Moody Blues: Threshold of a Dream Live at the Isle of Wight Festival.

Reconstructed Metropolis in Cinemas in UK and Ireland Ahead of Blu-ray

Following rave reviews at the 60th Berlinale (Berlin International Film Festival) in February, Eureka Entertainment has announced the UK and Ireland cinema release of one of the biggest of all film finds – Fritz Lang's 1927 science fiction masterwork, Metropolis, newly reconstructed and restored, featuring almost 30 minutes of footage previously thought lost to the world. The cinema release date has been set for September 10, ahead of the Blu-ray release in late 2010 on the Masters of Cinema series.

Well Go USA has set a July 27 street date for the Blu-ray release of the Hong Kong martial arts movie IP Man, directed by Wilson Yip and starring Donnie Yen. The film premiered in North America at the 2009 New York Asian Film Festival and was the opening feature at 2009 Fantasia International Film Festival. Both a collector's edition and a standard edition will be available.

The UK branch of Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced the action thriller Armored for release on Blu-ray on May 31. This movie stars Matt Dillon, Jean Reno and Laurence Fishburne, as a crew of officers at an armored transport security firm who embark on the ultimate heist against their own company.

For the third week in a row, Avatar was the top-selling title on Blu-ray, according to data from Nielsen VideoScan for the week ended May 9. In a a week without any major new releases, second place went to a high-profile catalog release: Saving Private Ryan. The family film Tooth Fairy, starring Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, ended up third. Saving Private Ryan Blu-ray Audio Issue Confirmed/Return Instructions (Update 3)

When Saving Private Ryan came out on Blu-ray, some enthusiasts claimed that they noticed an audio issue with the movie and that, starting at chapter 15, the sound went out of sync with the picture. Now Paramount Home Entertainment has unofficially confirmed to The Digital Bits that "there IS a sound sync issue on current copies." The studio is reportedly working on fixed discs for retail, and is expected to announce a replacement plan soon. Update: UK sales stopped. Update 2: return instructions added. Update 3: UK sales resumed, other European releases delayed.

Avatar Sells 6.2 Million Copies on Blu-ray Worldwide

According to Deadline Hollywood's Nikki Finke, Avatar has sold 6.2 million copies on Blu-ray in its first three weeks on shelves, "more than double the industry standard for the high-definition format." James Cameron's epic is now the top-selling Blu-ray release of all time worldwide, and it has "no sign of slowing down."

Lionsgate Acquires Newmarket Titles for Home Video

Lionsgate and Newmarket Films (a subsidiary of Exclusive Media Group), a Los Angeles-based film production and distribution company, have announced that they have entered into a home entertainment distribution deal including Blu-ray. Under the terms of the arrangement, Lionsgate will become the exclusive home entertainment distributor for all Newmarket Films theatrical releases in the US in addition to a large majority of Newmarket's library.

The British Video Association (BVA) is coordinating a promotional Blu-ray bundle offer ahead of the FIFA World Cup in South Africa being televised in HD in the UK for the first time. The bundle includes a Blu-ray player from Samsung and six BD movies. The promotion will be available to stores nationwide week commencing 17 May 2010 and aims to help retailers capitalize on the expected increase in HDTV sales in the run up to the World Cup.

This double feature consists of Death Note and Death Note: The Last Name, the two Japanese live-action films made in 2006 based on the manga series of the same title. Yesterday was the world premiere of StreetDance 3D, attended by Britain's Got Talent Alumni Flawless, Diversity and George Sampson. This movie, the UK's first ever street dance movie, and the first British film to be shot entirely in 3D, will open in British theaters, in realD 3D and 2D, on May 21.

Amazon has an interesting Blu-ray related lightning deal: up to 2 p.m. PDT, you can order the Rambo 1-3 Box Set on Blu-ray (consisting of First Blood, Rambo: First Blood Part II and Rambo III) for only $18.49 (56% off MSRP). This works out to a little over $6 per Rambo movie. Note that the fourth movie, Rambo, is not included in this box set. Update: deal expired.

Regardless of their personal opinion regarding Mel Gibson, many agree with the conclusion best illustrated by his "cameo" in South Park – that he's completely insane. Whether that makes him a good actor (it works for Jim Carrey) or not is disputable, and his performance in the mediocre Edge of Darkness - out today on Blu-ray – is not going to help anyone decide. If only we could go back to happier, Braveheart times.

Avatar Is Top-selling Blu-ray in the UK

Avatar has broken another industry record: it is now the biggest selling Blu-ray title ever in the UK, announced the local branch of Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment announced. In two weeks, 505,057 units of Avatar were sold on the high-definition Blu-ray format – beating the all-time Blu-ray record of 490,633 held by The Dark Knight and passing the half-million milestone.

Warner Home Video has announced a wave of science fiction movies for release on Blu-ray on September 7: Forbidden Planet (Fred Wilcox, 1956); Lost in Space (Stephen Hopkins, 1998); Mars Attacks! Universal Studios Home Entertainment has announced Alfred Hitchcock's horror classic Psycho for release on Blu-ray on October 19, in a "meticulously restored" 50th Anniversary Edition, with a new 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack (the original mono audio track will be included as well). It will be presented in a single-sided BD50. Psycho will also be honored during its landmark anniversary by the upcoming 2010 Cannes Film Festival.

Fox Pathé Europa has announced I Love You Phillip Morris for release on Blu-ray on June 16. The French studio has set the same list price (€19.98) for the DVD and BD editions of this movie. What is more, the Blu-ray edition also includes the DVD, so consumers are being offered the BD essentially for free.

Blue Underground has announced the 1969 Italian (but English-spoken) crime film Machine Gun McCain for release on Blu-ray on August 24. This movie, starring John Cassavetes, Peter Falk and Gena Rowlands, was part of the Official Selection at the 1969 Cannes Film Festival. It is available for the first time now on home video in the US.
