Dracula (1958) 4K Blu-ray

Warner Archive, in association with Hammer Films, is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Terence Fisher's Dracula (1958), starring Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Michael Gough, Melissa Stribling, and Carol Marsh. The releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 27.

One Night Only Collector's Edition 4K Blu-ray

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced that it will release on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray Will Gluck's romantic dramedy One Night Only (2026), starring Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner, Bobby Cannavale, Molly Ringwald, and LeVar Burton. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

Gwendoline Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray

Severin Films has dated and detailed its upcoming Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray release of Just Jaeckin's Gwendoline (1984), starring Tawny Kitaen, Brent Huff, Zabou Breitman, Bernadette Lafont, and Jean Rougerie. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on November 24.

This Week on Blu-ray: August 31-September 6

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

Spartacus: Blood and Sand Blu-ray Announced (Update)

Anchor Bay Entertainment has announced the Blu-ray edition of the TV series Spartacus: Blood and Sand – The Complete First Season, originally aired on Starz, with a release date of September 21, in high-end collectible, book-style packaging. As a Blu-ray exclusive, four episodes have been personally selected as "Directors' Cut Extended Episodes," featuring content too risqué (even for cable TV). Update: video will be 1080p.

Western Europe: Blu-ray Sales Double in Q1, Drive Overall Growth

According to figures released by the Digital Entertainment Group Europe (DEGE), strong Blu-ray Disc sales continued during the first quarter of 2010, with 8.4 million discs sold (94% up year-on-year). BD sales revenues reached €151.4 million (up 61.5%). Thanks to that, sales revenue from packaged media grew by 2.3%; Blu-ray now accounts for over 10% of that revenue.

Severin Planning Two Cushing/Lee Movies on Blu-ray

Severin Films has revealed that it plans to give the Blu-ray treatment to two cult horror movies teaming up Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee: Horror Express and The House That Dripped Blood. There is not a fixed release date at the moment. Likewise, edition details and special features are still pending.

Blu-ray Sales, May 10-16: Avatar Hangs On (Update)

Avatar showed no signs of weakness and comfortably held on to the top-selling spot for the fourth week in a row. According to data from Nielsen VideoScan for the week ended May 16, James Cameron's epic outsold runner-up Legion by over 50%. All three theatrical new releases for the week managed a Blu-ray market share of 30% or more. Update: overall sales figures added.

When he directed and starred in the acclaimed Gran Torino, many thought it was the way that the veteran actor and filmmaker had chosen to take a bow and retire from the scene. But far from slowing down, he jumped right into directing Invictus, based on the true story of how Nelson Mandela joined forces with the captain of South Africa's rugby team to help unite their country after the abolition of apartheid.

Grand Canyon Adventure 3D Blu-ray Coming Up

During the Media-Tech fair in Frankfurt, German authoring studio Imagion announced that it's currently producing what will be the first European-produced 3D Blu-ray: the documentary Grand Canyon Adventure: River at Risk, originally shot using IMAX 3D cameras. This title will be released by the studio Eurovideo in late June. Not only will it include 3D menus, but also a 3D-compatible BD-Live application.

House Season 6 Blu-ray Announced (Update)

Universal Studios Home Entertainment has announced that it will start giving the high-definition treatment to its award-winnning medical series House on Blu-ray with the release of House: Season Six, which is scheduled for August 31. This season set will include all 21 episodes in five BD50 discs. Update: special features added.

Warner Home Video has announced Wonders of the Solar System for September 7, presented in two BD50 discs. In this BBC science documentary series, Professor Brian Cox (not to be mistaken with the Scottish actor) visits some of the most stunning locations on Earth to describe how the laws of nature have carved natural wonders across the Solar System.

The UK branch of Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced that it will release the thriller Exam on Blu-ray on June 7. Nominated for Outstanding Debut at this year's BAFTA awards, Exam has a group of strangers embark on the most testing –and maybe final- job interview of their lives. It is the first feature from writer/director Stuart Hazeldine.

Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps Photos and Videos

Blu-ray a PS3 Buy Motivator for 2 out of 3 Gamers

The Blu-ray capabilities of the PS3 are a console purchase motivator for 65% of gamers who do not currently own a PS3 but are thinking of doing so, according to a survey carried out by Nielsen. On the other hand, the urge to buy a specific game appears lowest in the list of motivators, with only 12% mentioning it as a purchase motivator.

Universal Studios Home Entertainment has announced The Breakfast Club for release on Blu-ray on August 3. When it was released 25 years ago, this movie, written and directed by John Hughes, quickly became the definitive teen film of the 1980s and remains as moving and poignant today as it was 25 years ago.

The five new Blu-ray two-packs released today by Paramount Home Entertainment (Black Sheep / Tommy Boy, Coming to America / Trading Places, Defiance / Enemy at the Gates, Four Brothers / The Warriors and Tropic Thunder / We Were Soldiers) are selling this week for $19.99 at Wal-Mart, or just about $10 per movie.

Repo Men Unrated Blu-ray Announced

Universal Studios Home Entertainment has announced Repo Men for release on Blu-ray on July 20. This futuristic action-thriller has no relationship with the previous Repo! The Genetic Opera, even though it shares the premise of a dystopian future where transplanted human organs can be repossessed. The BD will contain two versions of the movie: the unrated director's cut (120') and the theatrical version of the film (113').

Buy Panasonic 3D TV, Get 3D Blu-ray of Ice Age 3 and Coraline Free

Panasonic has announced exclusive agreements with Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment and Universal Studios Home Entertainment, to offer the Blu-ray 3D versions of Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs and Coraline with its VIERA 3D HDTVs. Consumers who purchase a Panasonic VIERA VT25 plasma TV between May 16 and July 10 will be able to receive the two Blu-ray 3D titles via mail-in coupon.

Jackie Chan’s Robin-B-Hood Blu-ray Detailed

Showbox Home Entertainment has revealed the details for the Blu-ray release of Robin-B-Hood, which is due out in the UK on May 24. In this 2006 Hong Kong action/comedy movie, Jackie Chan stars as an acrobatic safe cracker whose life is turned upside down when he accepts a mysterious kidnapping assignment from an eccentric underworld tycoon.

BFS Entertainment has announced Last Chance to See for release on Blu-ray on July 6. In this documentary series, aired on the BBC, British comedy legend Stephen Fry, follows in the footsteps of his good friend, the late writer Douglas Adams (The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy), along with zoologist Mark Carwardine, to remote regions in search of some of the rarest, most threatened animals on Earth.

Warner Home Video has announced the Blu-ray release of the New Line title Se7en (also known as Seven) for September 14. This Blu-ray edition, supervised by director David Fincher, will come in DigiBook form, with a 32-page booklet containing information and photos on the making of the movie, and a special look at its alternate endings.

Image Signs Blu-ray Deal with World Extreme Cagefighting

Image Entertainment has announced the signature of a long-term distribution agreement with World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC), providing the studio exclusive Rights for US Blu-ray releases of selected WEC fights. The first title under this deal is UFC Presents WEC: Aldo Vs. Faber, due out on July 20, following the significant pay-per-view event held in Sacramento, California, on April 24.

One of the movies with the most home video releases ever is now going high-def. An early announcement to retailers indicates that, on August 31, Anchor Bay entertainment will release Sam Raimi's The Evil Dead on Blu-ray. There is no information regarding technical specifications or special features at this stage.

Criterion Blu-ray in August: Black Orpheus, Crumb

The Criterion Collection has announced two titles for release on Blu-ray in August. On August 10, the studio will release the award-winning documentary Crumb (Terry Zwigoff, 1994), and a week later, the classic Black Orpheus (Orfeu negro, Marcel Camus, 1959). Both will be presented in new, restored high-definition digital transfers (director-approved for Crumb) with uncompressed mono audio.

Humanoids from the Deep Blu-ray Coming Soon

An early announcement to retailers indicates that, on August 3, Shout! Factory will release on Blu-ray another title from the Roger Corman Cult Classics collection: Humanoids from the Deep, a 1980 horror movie about an aquaculture experiment gone wrong, resulting in fish-like humanoids rising from the sea to spawn their vengeance. Release details and special features haven't been announced at this time.

Wal-Mart Expands Blu-ray, Brings Back Low-priced Players

Wal-Mart has announced that it will allocate up to 50% more floor space for Blu-ray Disc players and movies in more than 1,200 stores across the US, as part of a planned expansion of its in-store home entertainment and technology departments. The retailer is also offering two low-price Blu-ray players: the Magnavox MB500MG1F (BonusView) for $78, and the Philips BDP3020 (BD-Live) for $97.
