Dracula (1958) 4K Blu-ray

Warner Archive, in association with Hammer Films, is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Terence Fisher's Dracula (1958), starring Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Michael Gough, Melissa Stribling, and Carol Marsh. The releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 27.

One Night Only Collector's Edition 4K Blu-ray

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced that it will release on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray Will Gluck's romantic dramedy One Night Only (2026), starring Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner, Bobby Cannavale, Molly Ringwald, and LeVar Burton. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

Gwendoline Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray

Severin Films has dated and detailed its upcoming Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray release of Just Jaeckin's Gwendoline (1984), starring Tawny Kitaen, Brent Huff, Zabou Breitman, Bernadette Lafont, and Jean Rougerie. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on November 24.

This Week on Blu-ray: August 31-September 6

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

Warner Home Video, in conjunction with BBC Video, has announced Wallander for release on Blu-ray on October 19, just two weeks after airing on PBS Masterpiece Mystery. This two-disc set will include This two-disc set will include "Faceless Killers,", "The Man Who Smiled" and "The Fifth Woman," three 90-minute episodes based on the internationally best-selling novels by Henning Mankell and starring Kenneth Branagh as Swedish police detective Kurt Wallander.

MacGruber Announced on Blu-ray

Universal Studios Home Entertainment has officially announced and detailed the Blu-ray release of MacGruber, which is due out on September 7 in an unrated version. In this action comedy, based upon a recurring sketch and character on Saturday Night Live, special operative MacGruber has sworn off a life of fighting crime with his bare hands. But when he learns that his country needs him to find a nuclear warhead that's been stolen by his sworn enemy, Dieter Von Cunth, MacGruber figures he's the only one tough enough for the job.

Warner Home Video has announced the family movie My Dog Skip for Blu-ray release on October 19. This film about the friendship between a teenager and his highly talented terrier is based upon an autobiographical book by Willie Morris, and was a box office success in the year 2000.

1935 Mutiny on the Bounty Blu-ray Announced

Warner Home Video has announced Mutiny on the Bounty for Blu-ray release on November 16 in a Blu-ray book. Winner of the Academy Award for Best Picture and starring Clark Gable and Charles Laughton, this film has been especially remastered in honor of its 75th anniversary, having undergone a full photochemical restoration sourced from the film long-thought-lost, and recently rediscovered original nitrate camera negative.

Doctor Who Series 5 Announced on Blu-ray

Warner Home Video has set a November 9 street date for the Blu-ray release of the BBC series Doctor Who: The Complete Fifth Series, starring Matt Smith as the Next Doctor - after the departure of David Tennant. This series will be presented in six Blu-ray Discs.

The Bounty Hunter was easily the top-selling title on Blu-ray during the week ended July 18, according to data from Nielsen VideoScan First Alert. Avatar climbed back to second place. Matching up action and comedy might be one of the greatest cinematic accomplishments of all time. Okay, that might be a little extreme, but for those who want to "turn on, tune in, and drop out", action comedies provide the perfect combination of aggression relieving explosions and fall down laughing dialog to complement whatever mood you're in. For fans of this genre, today's Blu-ray release of The Losers will be a welcome addition to your Sunday-afternoon library.

Target Stores Inc. has announced they will have one of the many unique retailer exclusives to debut on September 28 when Iron Man 2 releases. Each case will be individually numbered and limited to 30,000 units. The Blu-ray release will duplicate the already announced Iron Man 2 Blu-ray release. The Iron Man 2 Blu-ray Metal Case is available for pre-order from Target.com for $34.99.

Fans of the 1968 fantasy filled classic Chitty Chitty Bang Bang will be glad to hear that web giant Amazon has placed this Blu-ray up for pre-order. No date is listed but they have clued us in on that it will be a Blu-ray + DVD combo packaging as well as a DVD + Blu-ray packaging.

Sharp introduces the 100GB BDXL Blu-ray Disc

Sharp announced they will introduce a new BDXL Blu-ray Disc that are capable of offering 100GB-128GB's of Storage. The current BD-50 is dual layer and the increased storage space will more than double that with the use of 3 and 4 layers respectively. The BDXL will be available as recordable discs, however the 100GB will be the largest rewritable disc offered at the moment.
So far, the latest Sharp BD-HDW700 Blu-ray recorder/Player is the only player to support the newly announced media. The cost of this player will be 5000¥ or $57,452 and will only be available in Japan on July 30,2010.

Warner Home Video has announced the vampire movie Lost Boys: The Thirst for release on Blu-ray on October 12. This new, direct-to-BD installment of the Lost Boys franchise has Corey Feldman return as "ace vampire hunter" Edgar Frog. The Blu-ray will include a DVD and Digital Copy.

This is officially one of the most exciting days in the history of HD news reporting. The Criterion Collection has announced no fewer than five films for release on Blu-ray in October. On October 12, it will release The Magician (Ingmar Bergman, 1958) and The Darjeeling Limited (Wes Anderson, 2007); a week later, the anxiously-awaited Seven Samurai (Akira Kurosawa, 1954); and finally, on October 26, the label will release House (Nobuhijo Obayashi, 1977) and Paths of Glory (Stanley Kubrick, 1957).

Grindhouse Special Edition Blu-ray in October

An early announcement to retailers indicates that, confirming earlier rumors, Vivendi Visual Entertainment is set to release the Weinstein Company production Grindhouse on a Special Edition Blu-ray on October 5 (perfect for a Halloween viewing party with friends). No release details are available at this moment, other than it will be a two-disc edition.

The Blu-ray release of Alien Anthology, just announced, is only one aspect of Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment's yearlong campaign to honor the studio's 75th birthday. Select Fox fan-favorites are coming out on Blu-ray this year, and have just gone up for preorder (albeit without a date): The Last of the Mohicans, Moulin Rouge!, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Romeo + Juliet, and The Sound of Music.

Alien Anthology Blu-ray Dated and Detailed

IGN has the scoop on the release date and details for the Alien Anthology, which will come out in the US on October 26. This six-disc set contains about 60 hours of special features and over 12,000 images, including material from the legendary early 1990s LaserDisc release, the "Legacy" release and the Quadrilogy DVDs. 20th Century Fox claims that the four Alien films have been "reinvigorated for an intense Blu-ray high-definition viewing experience."

BFI Video has revealed the edition details for the 1961 classic The Innocents, which, as previously reported, will come out in the UK on August 23. Jack Clayton's superbly haunting film retains the ambiguity of Henry James' novella The Turn of the Screw from which it is adapted, and continues to inspire today's "haunted house" movies. It will be presented in 2.35:1 1080p video, with a mono uncompressed audio track (at 48kHz/24 bit).

14 Blades Announced on Blu-ray

Market research company Media Control GfK International announced today the release of its First Half 2010 Home Video Report. Based on actual point-of-sale retail data, consumer purchases of Blu-ray titles increased 107% in major markets in Western Europe/Japan during the first half of 2010, compared to the same period of 2009.

Grand Canyon Adventure IMAX Documentary Gets 3D Blu-ray

Sony had the first movie on 3D Blu-ray, but the first non-movie stereoscopic Blu-ray for general release in the US will come from Image Entertainment. The IMAX documentary Grand Canyon Adventure: River at Risk, already available on 2D, will come out on a 3D BD edition on October 26. MSRP for the 3D is $24.98, the same as the 2D.

Universal Studios Home Entertainment has announced Red Dragon for release on Blu-ray on October 12. This crime thriller, directed by Brett Ratner and starring Anthony Hopkins, is the second adaptation of Thomas Harris's novel (the first one was Manhunter, only available as part of MGM's The Hannibal Lecter Collection). Red Dragon will be presented in a single-sided BD50 disc.

October Blu-ray Date for Spielberg’s A.I. (Update)

Even after the bonanza of this spring, it seems that studios are not quite done yet releasing Spielberg titles on Blu-ray: an early announcement to German retailers indicates that A.I. Artificial Intelligence will finally see the light on Blu-ray on October 15. No official announcement has ben made yet. Update: title delayed.

Warner Home Video has announced that on October 19 it will release Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban: Ultimate Edition and Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire: Ultimate Edition. Like the UEs of Sorcerer's Stone and Chamber of Secrets, released in 2009, each title will feature a new chapter of "Creating the World of Harry Potter," a unique 8-hour documentary series with never-before-seen footage, intriguing stories and the definitive insider look behind the films.
