Dracula (1958) 4K Blu-ray

Warner Archive, in association with Hammer Films, is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Terence Fisher's Dracula (1958), starring Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Michael Gough, Melissa Stribling, and Carol Marsh. The releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 27.

One Night Only Collector's Edition 4K Blu-ray

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced that it will release on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray Will Gluck's romantic dramedy One Night Only (2026), starring Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner, Bobby Cannavale, Molly Ringwald, and LeVar Burton. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

Gwendoline Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray

Severin Films has dated and detailed its upcoming Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray release of Just Jaeckin's Gwendoline (1984), starring Tawny Kitaen, Brent Huff, Zabou Breitman, Bernadette Lafont, and Jean Rougerie. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on November 24.

This Week on Blu-ray: August 31-September 6

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

Last of the Mohicans Blu-ray in October

An early announcement to retailers indicates that 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment is set to release Michael Mann's The Last of the Mohicans on Blu-ray on October 5. The movie will be presented in a "director's definitive cut," and bonus features will include an interview with actor Daniel-Day Lewis.

Iron Man 2 Blu-ray to Include Captain America and Thor Footage

Comicbookmovie.com is reporting that the two-disc special edition Blu-ray of Iron Man 2 (due out September 28) will include teaser trailers for the Thor movie and Captain America. Both will reportedly be easter eggs, hidden in a special S.H.I.E.L.D. Data Vault.

Redbox Rolls out Blu-ray Rentals

As was announced earlier in the year, Redbox has started offering Blu-ray titles for rental at more than 13,000 of its 23,000 kiosk locations. Rental price is $1.50 a night (50 cents more than for DVD). By the fall, all of the company's kiosks will offer BDs; and by the end of the year, 10% of kiosk inventory will be in high definition. Customers can check for Blu-ray availability in their area at the dedicated Redbox Blu-ray site.

Panasonic Expands Full HD 3D Blu-ray Player Line

Panasonic have expanded their line of Full HD 3D Blu-ray Disc players with the recently announced DMP-BDT100, which is set to be released this August. Additionally, compared to Panasonic's DMP-BDT300 and DMP-BDT350 models, the DMP-BDT100 will carry a substantially lower price tag.

Apocalypse Now Blu-ray Detailed, Gets Back Original Framing

IGN has the scoop on the full release details for the Apocalypse Now Blu-ray, and they include two welcome surprises. Firstly, Hearts of Darkness, the acclaimed documentary on the grueling shoot of Francis Ford Coppola's classic (included only in the Full Disclosure Edition), will be presented in high-definition 1080p resolution. Secondly, both cuts of Apocalypse Now will be presented in the original theatrical aspect ratio of 2.35:1.

Robin Hood Blu-ray Announced for September

Universal Studios Home Entertainment has announced Robin Hood for Blu-ray release on September 21. The movie reuniting Russell Crowe with Ridley Scott will be presented in a three-disc Blu-ray Hi-Def Combo Pack (BD/DVD/digital copy), including the theatrical film, as well as a never-before-seen unrated director's cut of the movie. The BD itself will be a single-sided BD50. The Blu-ray release also exclusively features an interactive "Director's Notebook," which seamlessly takes fans inside the making of the specific scenes of the film, from production design to special effects.

Warner Announces Trio of 3D Blu-ray Titles, Bundled with LG, Sony Gear

Warner Home Video has announced that it will release 3D Blu-ray versions of the IMAX documentaries Under the Sea, Space Station and Deep Sea. However, all three will be bundled with select Blu-ray 3D players, 3DTVs and 3D projectors, under a new partnership between Warner and two consumer electronics manufacturers: LG and Sony.

Blu-ray Sales, July 19-25: Losers Win, Get Most Sales from BD (Update 2)

The Losers was the top-selling title on Blu-ray during the week ended July 25, according to data from Nielsen VideoScan. WB's actioner also managed 51% from its total optical media sales from the BD, breaking the BD percentage record for a new, theatrically-released movie. How to Train Your Dragon Announced on Blu-ray

Paramount Home Entertainment has announced that it will release the Dreamworks Animation title How to Train Your Dragon in a Blu-ray/DVD combo on October 15. Although this adventure/fantasy movie was produced and shown theatrically in 3D, only a 2D BD version has been announced at the moment; like Monsters vs Aliens, it may eventually be available as part of a hardware bundle.

V Season 1 Blu-ray Announced

Warner Home Video has announced V: The Complete First Season for Blu-ray release on November 2. This ABC science-fiction series, a remake of the acclaimed 1980s TV series, will be presented in two discs, with over two hours of all-new bonus features.

Amityville Horror 2005 Blu-ray Coming Up

An early announcement to retailers indicates that MGM Home Entertainment will release the 2005 remake of The Amityville Horror on Blu-ray on September 14. Like other recent catalog releases from the studio, this release will include both the BD and DVD versions (in separate discs). Other technical specifications and special features are still pending.

This Week on Blu-ray, July 27-August 2

As I write today's post, I can't help but see the similarities between the cover of today's Blu-ray release of Clash of the Titans and a scene from the beginning of Transformers. That might explain why this action-packed remake failed to provoke the same level of attention - even while boasting a 3D presentation - as some of the more popular action films in the last decade.

Mirrors 2 Blu-ray Announced

Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment has announced Mirrors 2 for Blu-ray release on October 19. This direct-to-video sequel to the psychological thriller Mirrors will come out in a BD/DVD combo and include Into the Mirror (Geoul sokeuro), the 2003 Korean film in which the contemporary horror classic is based, about a series of gruesome deaths in a department store all involving mirrors (in standard definition only).

Lionsgate Home Entertainment has announced Killers for release on Blu-ray on September 7. This action movie/romantic comedy (not the 1946 film noir classic) stars Katherine Heigl as a woman who thinks she has found the man of her dreams (Aston Kutcher) - only he happens to be an international spy.

Fox Announces Family Guy: It's a Trap!

Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment has announced the Blu-ray release of Family Guy : It's A Trap, an "outrageous retelling" of Star Wars: Episode VI Return of the Jedi, and the third installment of the Family Guy Star Wars satire. Street date has been set for December 21. Family Guy: It's A Trap! will also be available in a Blu-ray triple-pack featuring all the "Family Guy"Star Wars spoofs: Blue Harvest (previously unreleased on BD) and Something Something Something Dark Side.

Baseball: The Tenth Inning Announced on Blu-ray

Paramount Home Entertainment has announced Baseball: The Tenth Inning for release on Blu-ray on October 5. This documentary by Ken Burns and Lynn Novick, scheduled to air on September 28, picks up the story of the national pastime where Ken Burns' epic 1994 documentary film series Baseball left off. It will be presented in a two-disc edition.

Lionsgate Announces Apocalypse Now Blu-ray

Lionsgate President and Co-Chief Operating Officer Steve Beeks and filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola announced today that Lionsgate and American Zoetrope have entered into a multi-year home entertainment distribution agreement (including Blu-ray). The first title released as part of the deal was Coppola latest film, Tetro; the next one will be the renowned and award-winning war film Apocalypse Now, scheduled for Blu-ray release on October 19.

The Secret in Their Eyes Announced on Blu-ray

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced The Secret in Their Eyes (El secreto de sus ojos) for release on Blu-ray on September 21. This Argentinean psychological thriller, directed by Juan José Campanella, was the surprise winner of the 2010 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, defeating the favorites A Prophet and The White Ribbon.

Warner Home Video has announced that it will release the New Line production A Nightmare on Elm Street on Blu-ray on October 5, in a BD/DVD/digital copy combo pack. The BD of this remake of the Wes Craven horror classic will exclusively include WB's Maximum Movie Mode, renamed for the occasion "Maniacle Movie Mode."

Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Return of the Living Dead Blu-ray

Early retailer alerts indicate that MGM will add to the pre-Halloween glut of horror titles with two titles from its catalog: Invasion of the Body Snatchers (Philip Kaufman, 1978) and The Return of the Living Dead (Dan O'Bannon, 1985). Both have a street date of September 14. There is no information on technical specifications or special features at the moment.

During the San Diego Comic-Con, it has been revealed that A&E Home Entertainment will release Space: 1999 - Season 1 on Blu-ray on November 2. No technical details are available, other than it will be a "complete, uncut and restored in high definition" release, in pillarboxed 1.33:1 video.

Clash of the Titans Gets 3D Blu-ray in Germany

The first day-and-date 3D Blu-ray release in the world will come from an unlikely studio, with an unlikely title - and outside the US. On August 10, the German branch of Warner Home Video is releasing Clash of the Titans in a two-disc edition, with one disc for the 2D version and another for the 3D. There is no information regarding region coding, but WHV doesn't usually region-lock its titles.

Alien Anthology Blu-ray Promoted at Comic-Con, Egg Up for Preorder

At the San Diego Comic-Con, Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment is promoting the upcoming release of the Alien Anthology Blu-ray, setting up a life-size replica of the hibernation chamber of the Nostromo spaceship. At the same time, the studio has released two teasers, for the Anthology itself and for the "Egg" limited packaging, which is already up for preorder at the Fox site, with a list price of $199.99 (current price $149.99).

Warner Home Video has announced Splice for Blu-ray release on October 5, in a BD/DVD/Digital Copy combo pack. This science-fiction movie, directed by Vincenzo Natali (Cube) and starring Adrien Brody and Sarah Polley, was well received in the festival scene, but upon its US theatrical release met with mixed reviews and a lukewarm box office reception.

Verizon FiOS TV Launches WealthTV in 3D

Verizon has announced it is going 3D with the new video-on-demand offering from WealthTV. This FiOS Exclusive, will feature an upcoming episode on classic cars, "Wealth on Wheels Classic," in 3D. While most of us will never be able to afford most of these exotic cars, FiOS will have you in the drivers seat in no time.

Gladiator Remastered Blu-ray and Exchange Program (Update)

After months of rumors, announcements and cancellations, a new Blu-ray edition of Ridley Scott's Gladiator has at last been actually released in the Netherlands. Eager enthusiasts have compared the picture quality of this new release with that released last year and confirmed that the image is now noticeably superior. The Digital Bits has received confirmation that this remastered disc will also be available in the US, and that Paramount Home Entertainment will implement a "limited exchange program." 3D Blu-ray of Monster House Announced

Confirming earlier reports, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced its second movie for release on 3D Blu-ray: Monster House, which is scheduled to hit store shelves on September 14. Like the 3D edition of Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, this BD will include both a full-resolution 3D version and a 2D version of the movie.
