Dracula (1958) 4K Blu-ray

Warner Archive, in association with Hammer Films, is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Terence Fisher's Dracula (1958), starring Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Michael Gough, Melissa Stribling, and Carol Marsh. The releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 27.

One Night Only Collector's Edition 4K Blu-ray

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced that it will release on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray Will Gluck's romantic dramedy One Night Only (2026), starring Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner, Bobby Cannavale, Molly Ringwald, and LeVar Burton. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

Gwendoline Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray

Severin Films has dated and detailed its upcoming Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray release of Just Jaeckin's Gwendoline (1984), starring Tawny Kitaen, Brent Huff, Zabou Breitman, Bernadette Lafont, and Jean Rougerie. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on November 24.

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

New Entertainment Media has announced the WWII drama Good for Blu-ray release on September 28. Good stars Viggo Mortensen as a literature professor in 1930s Germany who, after writing a book about euthanasia, is supported and enlisted by the Nazi Party. It had a limited theatrical release.

Scooby-Doo Blu-ray Double Feature Announced

Warner Home Video has announced that on November 9, it will release a "family double feature", comprised of two live action Scooby-Doo movies: Scooby-Doo/Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed. This is the first time Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed will be available on Blu-ray Disc (Scooby-Doo had been released separately in 2007).

Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment has officially announced Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam for Blu-ray release on September 7, in a BD/DVD/Digital Copy combo pack. This sequel to 2008's Camp Rock stars Teen Choice Award-winning actress and recording artist Demi Lovato and the hugely popular, Grammy-nominated Jonas Brothers. It will be presented in an extended version, with two exclusive additional music sequences.

The Criterion Collection has revealed its Blu-ray slate for November and the prestigious independent studio shows no signs of slowing down. On November 9, the studio will release the highly controversial Antichrist (Lars von Trier, 2009). A week later, the long-rumored The Night of the Hunter (Charles Laughton, 1955) will hit shelves, along with Modern Times (Charles Chaplin, 1936). And last but not least, on November 23, Criterion will release America Lost and Found: The BBS Story, a six-disc box set compiling seven films from the innovative New Hollywood of the late 1960s and early 1970s.

George Lucas Announces Star Wars Blu-ray for 2011

Confirming earlier reports, George Lucas himself announced today that the Star Wars films will be released on Blu-ray in 2011, in a six-movie box set. Speaking at the Celebration V convention in Orlando, Lucas said: "I wish I could say it was coming out this year, but it will come out next year." New, extensive special features will be featured, including documentaries, vintage behind-the-scenes moments, interviews, retrospectives and never-before-seen footage from the Lucasfilm archives.

Confirming earlier reports, Optimum Home Entertainment has announced seven titles for Blu-ray release in the UK on September 13 as part of the Studio Canal Collection: Breathless (À bout de soufflé, Jean-Luc Godard, 1960); Le cercle rouge (Jean-Pierre Melville, 1970); Delicatessen (Jean-Pierre Jeunet and Marc Caro, 1991); The Graduate (Mike Nichols, 1967); Mulholland Drive (David Lynch, 2001); The Pianist (Roman Polanski, 2002); and The Third Man (Carol Reed, 1949).

Blu-ray of Star Trek: The Next Generation a Possibility

During a presentation at the Star Trek convention in Las Vegas, a question was asked about a Blu-ray release of the Star Trek: The Next Generation series. CBS Consumer Products VP John Van Citters replied that an HD remaster of TNG is "incredibly difficult without making them look awful." However, there are conversations going on within CBS on the issue, and Van Citters expected it to happen eventually.

Two Flipside Blu-ray Titles from BFI in September

BFI Video has announced two titles as part of its Flipside series, devoted to rescuing "weird and wonderful British films from obscurity. On September 13, the studio will release Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush (Clive Donner, 1967) and, fresh from its recent theatrical run, Bronco Bullfrog (Barney Platts-Mills, 1969). Both will be presented in two-disc BD/DVD dual format editions.

Mad Max Blu-ray Coming Up

An early announcement to retailers indicates that, on October 5, MGM Home Entertainment will release George Miller's violent and dystopic movie Mad Max, starring Mel Gibson, in a Blu-ray/DVD combo edition. Other edition details are still unconfirmed, but the bonus features from the special edition DVD will probably be included – some on the DVD.

Warner Home Video has announced the Western Jonah Hex for Blu-ray release on October 12, on a BD/DVD/Digital Copy combo pack. This adaptation of a DC Comics series, starring Josh Brolin as a drifter and bounty hunter, was an unmitigated critical and commercial failure, with a Rotten Tomatoes rating of 13% and a box office take of just over $10 million.

Kick-Ass was clearly the top-selling title on Blu-ray during the week ended August 8, according to data from Nielsen VideoScan First Alert. Lionsgate's very R-rated superhero movie moved more than twice as many BDs as Clash of the Titans, and got a whopping 49% of its total sales from the Blu-ray edition – as much as Avatar did in its first week.

Samsung Electronics America, Inc. today announced that the 3D Blu-ray edition of the Dreamworks Animation movie How to Train Your Dragon will be available exclusively as part of the Samsung's 3D starter kit, which also includes two pairs of Samsung 3D glasses for at-home viewing. Samsung will also make available an exclusive offering of the Shrek film series. Samsung has separately secured the exclusivity for the 3D Blu-ray versions of the IMAX documentaries Into the Deep and Galapagos.

The Blu-ray of Blood Simple, the first movie from the Coen brothers, which was scheduled to come out on August 3 along with three other titles from MGM Home Entertainment, is indefinitely delayed (although some retailers are still taking preorders). Vivendi Visual Entertainment has revealed the disc contents for Grindhouse: 2-Disc Collector's Edition, which as previously reported , will be released on Blu-ray on October 5. This is the first time that the full "Grindhouse experience" is available on disc in the US (it was conceived by filmmakers Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino as a built-in double feature, complete with trailers, but it had been split into two separate releases for home video). The Blu-ray will exclusively feature extended trailers, featurettes and still galleries.

An early announcement to retailers indicates that Lionsgate Home Entertainment is set to release the 1980s action/adventure/fantasy movie Highlander on November 2. There is no information regarding technical specification or special features at this time. This movie was released in the UK in 2009 and it became a heavily imported title (especially in its now-out of print SteelBook edition).
