A press officer from Panasonic UK has confirmed that the
Avatar 3D Blu-ray bundle deal between the consumer electronics manufacturer and 20th Century Fox "does run until Feb 2012." This is the first official confirmation of the duration of the exclusivity period, during which the 3D BD version of James Cameron's sci-fi epic will only be available to buyers of Panasonic 3D equipment (specific hardware required varies depending on territory).
This endorses early reports that hinted at an exclusivity period of "as long as a year or more" (see Blu-ray.com,
September 3).
This limited availability has spurred the secondary market, and copies of this title are currently selling on Ebay for well in excess of $100, and sometimes for as much as $400 – although for that money it makes much more sense to just buy the
Panasonic 3D Starter Kit and resell the 3D glasses.
