Dracula (1958) 4K Blu-ray

Warner Archive, in association with Hammer Films, is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Terence Fisher's Dracula (1958), starring Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Michael Gough, Melissa Stribling, and Carol Marsh. The releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 27.

One Night Only Collector's Edition 4K Blu-ray

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced that it will release on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray Will Gluck's romantic dramedy One Night Only (2026), starring Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner, Bobby Cannavale, Molly Ringwald, and LeVar Burton. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

Gwendoline Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray

Severin Films has dated and detailed its upcoming Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray release of Just Jaeckin's Gwendoline (1984), starring Tawny Kitaen, Brent Huff, Zabou Breitman, Bernadette Lafont, and Jean Rougerie. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on November 24.

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

The Big 4: Live from Sofia, Bulgaria, the eagerly-awaited live Blu-ray from the "Big Four" of thrash metal (Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth, and Anthrax), will finally come out on November 2, according to retailer information. This two BD set will showcase the concert bands held on June 22 in Sofia, Bulgaria: two hours of Metallica, and one hour each of Slayer, Megadeth and Anthrax.

Micmacs Blu-ray Announced

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced Micmacs (Micmacs à tire-larigot) for Blu-ray release on December 14. In his latest film, Amélie director Jean-Pierre Jeunet brings his trademark style and whimsy back to the screen with a satire about the arms trade. It will be presented in French 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio, with English subtitles.

Eat Pray Love Announced on Blu-ray

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced Eat Pray Love for Blu-ray release on November 23. This movie, based on a best-selling memoir by Elizabeth Gilbert, stars Julia Roberts as a woman who leaves New York and embarks on a yearlong journey of self-discovery. It will be presented in an extended director's cut, as well as in its theatrical version.

Neil Young’s Le Noise on YouTube Now; on Blu-ray in November

On November, Reprise Records will release Le Noise Film, a 39-minute black-and-white film of eight live-in-studio performances of the eight songs that appear on Neil Young's brand-new album Le Noise. It can already be previewed on YouTube. The performances, shot by filmmaker Adam CK Vollick, feature Young on acoustic and electric guitars at the home studio of producer Daniel Lanois in Silverlake, CA, where Young and Lanois recorded the album.

Make Way for Tomorrow Blu-ray Announced

Eureka Entertainment has officially announced Make Way for Tomorrow for Blu-ray release in the UK on October 25, as part of its Masters of Cinema collection. This 1937 Depression drama, directed by Leo McCarey, was described by Orson Welles as "the saddest movie ever made." It was only recently released in the US by Criterion, albeit on standard definition disc only.

Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack for Dreamworks Animation Movies

On November 30, Paramount Home Entertainment will re-release four titles from Dreamworks Animation as two-disc Blu-ray/DVD combos: Bee Movie, Madagascar, Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa and Monsters vs. Aliens (the latter two had been previously released as retailer-exclusive combos). Disc details are unchanged from the existing single-format releases.

Rumor: James Cameron Working on Abyss Blu-ray

The Digital Bits is reporting that, according to "multiple independent sources, including reliable industry insiders," James Cameron has been (or is about to begin) working on a new high-def transfer and master of The Abyss, presumably with the aim of releasing it on Blu-ray. The Bits also says that one of its readers recently asked Cameron specifically about this title, and the Canadian filmmaker replied that he was about to start work on a new transfer "using the same process he did with the Aliens Blu-ray."

Blu-ray Players Now in 17% of US Households

The number of US households with at least one Blu-ray Disc player (standalone or PS3) has doubled since 2008, reaching 17% in July, according to a new report drafted by market study company Centris. More than 25% OF HDTV households own a Blu-ray player, up from 15% two years ago. Standalone players have also caught up with the PlayStation 3: the percentage of households that watch discs on a Blu-ray player and on the PS3 is 45% and 47%, respectively.

Disney's latest direct-to-video feature, Tinker Bell and the Great Fairy Rescue, was second. The previous week's number one, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, dropped to third place. Vizio 3D Blu-ray Player with Wireless Coming up

According to FCC filings, Vizio is set to release a Blu-ray player compatible with the Blu-ray 3D format. It will carry model number VBR333 and, like the other Vizio BD players announced earlier in the year, it will also have wireless connectivity. Other details (including pricing and availability) are still to be determined.

Six Sony Blu-ray Titles Shift to Image

On December 7, Image Entertainment will re-release half a dozen movies previously released on Blu-ray by Sony Pictures Home Entertainment: About Last Night..., The Big Hit, Closer, The Deep, Half past Dead and St. Elmo's Fire. Special features in most titles differ from those in the now out-of-print BDs from SPHE. In all likelihood, this is part of a partnership agreement both companies recently entered into.

Quiet Days in Clichy Blu-ray Announced

Blue Underground has announced the erotic comedy/drama Quiet Days in Clichy for Blu-ray release on January 25, 2011. This adaptation of the Henry Miller novel, directed in 1970 by Jens Jorgen Thorsen, was seized by the US government on charges of obscenity. It was ultimately cleared in Federal Court, but the film mysteriously disappeared shortly after its release. Now more than 40 years later, this adults-only classic can be seen in a new high-definition transfer, completely uncut and uncensored, and featuring the original hit soundtrack by rock legend Country Joe McDonald.

Avatar Collector’s Edition Blu-ray Bonus Features Surface

The Collector's Edition of James Cameron's Avatar, expected for November 16, hasn't been formally announced yet, but information about its substantial content is already appearing on the web. This three-disc edition will include over an hour of deleted scenes, a 2-hour-plus documentary and over four hours of other special features.

Universal Studios Home Entertainment has announced two movies from its catalog for Blu-ray release on January 4, 2011: Backdraft: Anniversary Edition and Lost in Translation. The latter had been previously slated for December 7 by some retailers and is probably rescheduled to coincide with the theatrical release of Sofia Coppola's Somewhere, winner of the Golden Lion at Venice.

Back to the Future, Exorcist, Sound of Music Back in Theaters Ahead of Blu-ray

Several movie classics are briefly returning to movie theaters before their Blu-ray editions hit store shelves. Warner's The Exorcist will be screened (in its extended cut) on September 30. Fox's The Sound of Music will be presented (as a Sing-Along Event) in nearly 500 select movie theaters for a two-night-only engagement on October 19 and October 26. And Universal's Back to the Future will have two special screenings on October 23 and October 25th on 158 screens over 40 cities.

After all these years, it is still difficult to visualize funny-man Jon Favreau as being a successful action film director, but that is exactly what he has been able to accomplish with Iron Man, and its sequel, Iron Man 2 - which is out today on Blu-ray. If he decides take the director's chair for Iron Man 3 it will be interesting to see if he can keep the magic flowing where other action trilogies failed (I'm looking at you X3: The Last Stand and Spider-man 3).

Oppo BDP-83 Blu-ray Player Discontinued

Just one week after the Oppo BDP-80 was discontinued, now it is the turn for the upper-end and highly successful BDP-83 to be retired. It is no longer available for purchase on the Oppo official website, which displays the message: "Due to a shortage of major components, we have ceased production of this model." Oppo anticipates releasing its replacement, the 3D, Netflix-compatible model BDP-93, by the end of the year, "with November being our goal."

On November 23, the Canadian branch of Warner Home Video is re-releasing seven Blu-ray titles from its catalog as SteelBooks: 10,000 B.C., 300, The Dark Knight, The Departed, I Am Legend, Superman Returns and V for Vendetta. Additionally, Future Shop is hosting a vote to select the titles that will be included in the second wave.
