Blu-ray Sales: August 16-22: Project Hail Mary Grabs Achilles' Heel in Week Two

For the week that ended on August 22nd, Alliance Entertainment's Project Hail Mary topped the Blu-ray-only, overall packaged media and 4K UHD charts for the second week in a row. Second place went to Troy, which was released on remastered Blu-ray and 4K UHD by Arrow Video, while third place on the Blu-ray-only chart went to Universal Pictures Home Entertainment's Obsession (2025).

This Week on Blu-ray: August 31-September 6

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

Scream Factory and Shout Factory have announced their November batch of releases. They are: The Chow Yun-Fat Collection Volume One, The Family Man (2000), Women in Prison Collection (1971-1985), and The Transformers: The Movie (1986).

Ice Cream Man 4K Blu-ray

Alliance Entertainment is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Eli Roth's Ice Cream Man (2026), starring Ari Millen, Charlie Zeltzer, Shiloh O'Reilly, Sarah Abbott, and Benjamin Byron Davis. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

The Rock 30th Anniversary 4K Blu-ray

Twentieth Century Studios plans to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Michael Bay's The Rock (1996) with a new combo pack release, which is expected to arrive on the market before the end of the year.

Amazon's 2012 Black Friday Week Lightning Sale Schedule (Update #4)

After much anticipation, Amazon has finally released its Blu-ray lighting deals schedule for November 19th through November 26th. The week long Blu-ray lighting sales are part of Amazon's Black Friday Week. Blu-ray titles include most of those already announced by other major retailers, but expect Amazon to offer additional, heavily discounted titles without prior notice. Magnolia Pictures will release on Blu-ray director Lance Daly's thriller The Good Doctor (2011), starring Orlando Bloom, Riley Keough, Troy Garity, and Taraji P. Henson. The preliminary release date set by the distributors is December 18th.

Indomina Releasing and Vivendi Entertainment will release on Blu-ray director Leos Carax's Holy Motors (2012), starring Denis Lavant, Edith Scob, Eva Mendes, Kylie Minogue, and Michel Piccoli. The preliminary release date set by the distributors is February 26th.

Dogwoof Acquires Ken Loach’s Spirit of ‘45

British distributors Dogwoof announced that they have acquired the distribution rights to acclaimed director Ken Loach's (Kes, Route Irish) Spirit of '45 (2013). The theatrical release of the film will be complimented by an interactive project in collaboration with the filmmakers and commissioned by the BFI and Film 4.0.

Andrzej Zulawski's Possession Heading to Blu-ray

British distributors Second Sight Films have revealed that they are planning to bring to Blu-ray Polish director Andrzej Zulawski's cult film Possession (1981), starring Isabelle Adjani, Sam Neill, Heinz Bennent, and Margit Carstensen. The release will feature a new director-approved restoration and is expected to arrive on the market in 2013.

Oz: The Great and Powerful - New Theatrical Trailer

Walt Disney Pictures has issued a new trailer for Oz: The Great and Powerful, due in theaters in 3D and 2D early next year. The film's latest trailer reveals more of director Sam Raimi and screenwriters Mitchell Kapner and David Lindsay-Abaire story, which weaves the origin tale of L. Frank Baum's beloved wizard. Raimi's The Wizard of Oz prequel makes its U.S. theatrical debut on March 8, 2013.

Universal Announces Three 3D Nature Documentaries

This January, Universal Studios Home Entertainment is bringing three undersea nature documentaries to Blu-ray: Amazing Ocean, Fascination Coral Reef and Fascination Coral Reef: Mysterious Worlds Underwater. All three 3D/2D Blu-ray Combo Packs arrive on January 29, 2013.

20th Century Fox Entertainment has revealed that it is planning to bring to Blu-ray three classic films: Elia Kazan's Gentleman's Agreement (1947) and Wild River (1960), and John Ford's How Green Was My Valley (1941). The three releases will be available for purchase on January 15th.

Criterion Announces February Titles

The Criterion Collection has announced five titles for Blu-ray release in February. On February 5, the studio will release The Ballad of Narayama (Keisuke Kinoshita, 1958). A week later, it will release The Kid With a Bike (Dardenne Brothers, 2011). On February 19, it will release On the Waterfront (Elia Kazan, 1954). On February 26, it will release Chronicle of a Summer (Jean Rouch and Edgar Morin, 1961) and Sansho the Bailiff (Kenji Mizoguchi, 1954).

Warner Archive to Begin Releasing on Blu-ray

The Warner Archive Collection (WAC), the Warner Bros. Digital Distribution (WBDD) division dedicated to releasing on DVD previously unavailable films and television shows, announced today that it will begin releasing catalog titles on Blu-ray. The first two titles, Deathtrap and Gypsy, will debut on November 20th.

British distributors Eureka Entertainment have officially announced and detailed their upcoming Dual Format Edition of Yasujirô Ozu's Ukikusa a.k.a Floating Weeds (1959), starring Ganjirô Nakamura, Chishū Ryū, Machiko Kyô and Haruko Sugimura. The release will be available for purchase on December 3rd.

Independent distributors Code Red have revealed that they are planning to begin releasing on Blu-ray in 2013. Their first releases will be J.G. Patterson Jr.'s The Electric Chair (1976), Bill Leslie and Terry Lofton's Nail Gun Massacre (1985), and Jeff Lieberman's Just Before Dawn (1981).

Independent label Severin Films announced today that it has secured a new distribution deal with CAV Distributing Corporation. Severin Films also revealed that they are planning to bring to Blu-ray The Hairdresser's Husband and Felicity, as well as a 10th Anniversary edition of The Manson Family.

Blu-ray Sales, November 5-11: Spider-Man Swings to Number One

For the week ending on November 11th, Sony Pictures' The Amazing Spider-Man topped the Blu-ray-only and overall package media charts. Director Marc Webb's reboot of the blockbuster Spider-Man franchise made a huge sales impression in just a few days; it streeted on Friday, November 9th as opposed to Tuesday the 6th, and still it managed to top all home media charts, 3D Blu-ray included.

The Cinema Guild announced today the acquisition of U.S. distribution rights to Viola, Matías Piñeiro's dazzling riff on Shakespeare's Twelfth Night that premiered in the Wavelengths Section of the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival. "Viola" will receive a limited theatrical rollout next year followed by a home video release.
