Dracula (1958) 4K Blu-ray

Warner Archive, in association with Hammer Films, is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Terence Fisher's Dracula (1958), starring Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Michael Gough, Melissa Stribling, and Carol Marsh. The releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 27.

One Night Only Collector's Edition 4K Blu-ray

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced that it will release on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray Will Gluck's romantic dramedy One Night Only (2026), starring Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner, Bobby Cannavale, Molly Ringwald, and LeVar Burton. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

Gwendoline Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray

Severin Films has dated and detailed its upcoming Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray release of Just Jaeckin's Gwendoline (1984), starring Tawny Kitaen, Brent Huff, Zabou Breitman, Bernadette Lafont, and Jean Rougerie. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on November 24.

This Week on Blu-ray: August 31-September 6

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

Blu-ray Sees Worldwide Growth

After beginning worldwide shipments of Blu-ray movies this past April, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has seen substantial growth in its high definition business. These territories, including Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan, Eastern Europe, South America, and the Middle East, now represent 10% of their total Blu-ray business. In June alone, SPHE reported a 21% increase in orders across these regions.

Blu-ray Players Outpassing Rival HD DVD

Retailers are reporting that, despite HD DVD's price advantage, Blu-ray stand alone players are selling better than HD DVD stand alone players, and could be selling much more if supply could keep up with demand. Abt Electronics and Ultimate Electronics have reported that sales of Blu-ray players have increased dramatically since the introduction of low cost 2nd-generation players, and that current supplies are very tight.

Ratatouille Scheduled for November Blu-ray Release

Buena Vista Home Entertainment has revealed that they are currently planning to release Pixar's 'Ratatouille' on Blu-ray this November. While no exact date has been set, it has been expected for many weeks that it would arrive on the same day as two other Pixar Blu-ray releases - 'Cars' and 'Pixar Short Film Collection'. 'Ratatouille' will be presented in 2.39:1 1080p with 24-bit 5.1 PCM.

Bestdisc Buys Blu-ray Production Line

Taiwanese optical disc manufacturer Bestdisc has procured a production line for the manufacturing of Blu-ray movies. While relatively small compared to its competitors, Bestdisc plans to compete for orders in Japan along with market leaders Sony DADC and Memory-Tech. No specific date was given for when set-up would be completed.

Universal Wants Format War to Continue

Speaking exclusively with HiHD's Scott Hettrick, Universal president Craig Kornblau admitted that his studio is in favor of the format war continuing, despite the negative effects it has on consumer adoption. While its hard to argue that this war has driven down hardware prices and increased quality of releases much faster than if there was only a single format, consumers have mostly stayed away from buying either until a victor can be decided.

300 Sells 163K on Blu-ray

Earlier this week, Warner Home Video announced that their high definition releases of '300' sold a combined total of 250,000 units during its first week of sale. At that time, it was not revealed how many of those were Blu-ray and how many were HD DVD. Today, a blog post by USA Today writer Mike Snider indicates that the sales ratio was 65-to-35 in favor of Blu-ray, indicating around 163,000 copies of '300' on Blu-ray were sold.

Blue Ray Technologies Opens First Plant

Blue Ray Technologies has completed the development of their first Blu-ray production plant in Spokane, WA, and is now pressing Blu-ray discs. The plant is the first true indie Blu-ray plant owned and operated in the US, and will allow independent studios and directors to have their HD content put on Blu-ray discs and distributed to the world.

BBC Announces Fall Blu-ray Line-up

BBC has announced their fall line-up, which includes a number of Blu-ray releases. First up is 'Becoming Jane' on September 10th, followed by 'Planet Earth' (5-disc), 'Hotel Babylon Series 1', 'Bleak House', 'Galapagos' and 'Twenty Thousand Streets Under the Sky' on October 22nd. Finally, Robin Hood Series 1' will make its way onto Blu-ray on November 29th.

Kill Bill and Pulp Fiction Coming?

As previously reported, Sony has released a calendar for Blu-ray releases in Europe. A quick peek shows a couple of surprises. September 2nd shows the release of 'Kill Bill Part 1' and 'Kill Bill Part 2', followed the next day by 'Pulp Fiction'. All three releases are from Buena Vista Home Entertainment, who own the distribution of these titles in Europe. There has been no official announcement of these titles (the calendar should be considered unofficial), but we may have a nice surprise coming next month to Blu-ray.

Sony Pictures Europe Launches iCalendar

Sony Pictures Europe has released an iCalendar feed which allows consumers to automatically populate their favorite calendar application with European Blu-ray release dates. The feed works with the most popular calendar applications, including iCal, Outlook, Windows Calendar, Google Calendar, Mozilla Sunbird, and Lotus Notes; and will feature release schedules for Buena Vista, Eiv, Entertainment UK, Fox, Lions Gate, MGM, Paramount, Sony, and Warner.

First Independent Blu-ray Line in Europe

Infodisc, a German optical disc manufacturer, has announced that they have taken delivery on BD-ROM manufacturing equipment from Oerlikon. In the coming days, Infodisc will install the hardware, making them the first independent Blu-ray disc manufacturer in Europe. This will allow independent studios in Europe to get their movies distributed in the Blu-ray format easily and conveniently.

Queen Rocks Montreal on Blu-ray

Eagle Rock Entertainment has announced that they will bring a Queen concert from 1981 in Montreal to Blu-ray this November called 'Queen Rock Montreal'. No specs for the release have been announced at this time, but the concert (originally titled and released as 'We Will Rock You' in 1983) will be remastered from the original 35mm print.

Dragon Ball Z Interview

Our good friends over at Anime on Blu-ray have an interview with FUNimation regarding their upcoming release of Dragon Ball Z: 'Broly: The Legendary Super Saiyan' and 'Broly: Second Coming'. Some specs were revealed, including that the video will be encoded at 1080p using AVC, and that audio will be some form of DTS, with the original Japanese track also available.

Spider-Man 3 Specs

Scott Hettrick (HiHD) has revealed the specs for the upcoming two-disc Blu-ray release of 'Spider-Man 3', as well as some additional info about the upcoming 'Spider-Man High Definition Trilogy'. 'Spider-Man 3' will feature all the extras from the 2-disc DVD release, and both 'Spider-Man' and 'Spider-Man 2' will be single disc releases, with the SM2 featuring both versions of the film via seamless branching. Both the 'Spider-Man 3' and the Spider-Man box set will be available October 30th.

Spider-Man Swings onto Blu-ray

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced that they are releasing 'Spider-Man 3' and the 'Spider-Man High Definition Trilogy' for Blu-ray on October 30th. Very little is known about the specs of the releases, but we do know that 'Spider-Man 3' will be a two disc set packed with special features. Insider sources have also revealed that 'Spider-Man 2' will make use of seamless branching to present the two versions of the film.

Alexander Revisted Dated for Blu-ray

Warner Home Video has announced that they will bring 'Alexander Revisited' to Blu-ray on September 18th. Video will be encoded at 1080p using VC-1 and audio will be Dolby Digital. This 213 minute version represents the third cut of the film, and with any luck, the final version. Extras will include a director's commentary and trailer.

Panasonic Wants You in "Live in HD"

Panasonic has announced a program in association with the Center for Urban Research and Policy at Columbia University to set up 30 families with the ultimate HD lifestyles. Once all entries are received for the program, Director Brett Ratner and Writer/Director/Actor Kevin Smith will select the families based creativity of their submission. The selected families will the receive $20,000 in HD products, including a Panasonic Blu-ray disc player, and will document their experiences while using the equipment.

Starship Troopers Delayed

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has revealed that they have indefinitely delayed the Blu-ray release of 'Starship Troopers' just one day after it was announced. No reason was given for the delay at this time, but it appears someone at the studio jumped the gun. Stay tuned.

V for Vendetta Coming

If you bought a copy of '300' in Canada today you also got a nice surprise in the form of a insert showing 'V for Vendetta' coming soon for Blu-ray. As one of the titles still missing on Blu-ray from Warner's high definition catalog, it is a welcome addition to their Blu-ray portfolio. No date or specs have been given at this time.

Lionsgate Home Entertainment has revealed that they will be releasing the Christopher Walken film 'King of New York' for Blu-ray on October 23rd. No specs or extras have been announced at this time, but if its anything like recent Lionsgate releases, expect a 1080p transfer and DTS-HD audio.

Starship Troopers and Hollow Man on Blu-ray

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring two Paul Verhoeven cult classics, 'Starship Troopers' and 'Hollow Man', to Blu-ray on October 16th. Both will get the standard 1080p and PCM treatment, but no detailed specs or extras have been announced at this time. These releases come only three weeks after another Verhoeven film, 'Black Book', is scheduled for Blu-ray release.

Japan's Adult Industry Given Access to Blu-ray

While the effect of adult films on the format war may be a heavily contested, the fact remains that there is a huge demand for this type of material. In Japan, the ability to release adult material on Blu-ray just got a whole lot easier. Assist Corp, who has handled most of the early adult Blu-ray content in Japan, has partnered with a company based in Taiwan to begin replication of adult titles. They are expected to begin production next month.

The Company Planned for Blu-ray Release

The upcoming miniseries from Ridley Scott, 'The Company', is set to air on TNT this August, followed by a Blu-ray release on October 23rd. Based on a novel by Ken Nolan (Black Hawk Down), the miniseries follows the development of the CIA from its beginnings in a post-WWII Germany up until the fall of the Soviet Union. No specs have been released at this time, but the two disc release will feature extras not seen on TV.

Sopranos Season 6 Part II on Blu-ray

Warner Home Video has announced that 'The Sopranos: Season 6 Part II' will be released for Blu-ray on October 23rd, day and date with the DVD. It will feature the last nine episodes of the award winning drama. Some readers may recall that the Season 6 Part I release was the first Warner Blu-ray release with PCM. Hopefully, we will see a repeat performance for the series finale.

Both Hostel Films on Blu-ray

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring Eli Roth's 'Hostel' and 'Hostel II' to Blu-ray on October 23rd, day and date with the DVD releases. Both films will be presented in their unrated, director's cut form. No specifications have been announced at this time, but expect extras to mirror the DVDs which include commentaries, deleted scenes, and numerous featurettes.

Surf’s Up Comes to Blu-ray

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced that the animated film Surf's Up will come to Blu-ray on October 9th, day and date with the DVD release. No specs have been announced at this time, but special features will include a three-part documentary on the making of the film, audio commentary, a music video, and more.

Pixar Short Films Collection Dated

Buena Vista Home Entertainment has announced that the 'Pixar Short Films Collection' will make its way onto Blu-ray this November 6th. This disc will feature all 13 of the Pixar short films, including those which premier before Pixar films, and those that can be found on every Pixar DVD release. These shorts will be available for the first time in high definition. No specs have been released at this time.
