Dracula (1958) 4K Blu-ray

Warner Archive, in association with Hammer Films, is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Terence Fisher's Dracula (1958), starring Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Michael Gough, Melissa Stribling, and Carol Marsh. The releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 27.

One Night Only Collector's Edition 4K Blu-ray

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced that it will release on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray Will Gluck's romantic dramedy One Night Only (2026), starring Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner, Bobby Cannavale, Molly Ringwald, and LeVar Burton. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

Gwendoline Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray

Severin Films has dated and detailed its upcoming Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray release of Just Jaeckin's Gwendoline (1984), starring Tawny Kitaen, Brent Huff, Zabou Breitman, Bernadette Lafont, and Jean Rougerie. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on November 24.

This Week on Blu-ray: August 31-September 6

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

Monty Python's Life of Brian Announced for Blu-ray

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has revealed that they will be bringing the classic comedy 'Monty Python's Life of Brian' to Blu-ray on November 6th, day and date with the new DVD release. Specs and extras have yet to be announced, so watch for a more official announcement to come soon as November titles begin to trickle onto release schedules.

Fox and Disney Titles Announced

Catching up on a few title announcements, Fox Home Video has revealed that they are bringing, '28 Weeks Later' day and date with the DVD (and along side '28 Days Later') on October 9th; 'The Hills Have Eyes 2' (another day-and-date), and 'Home of the Brave' are coming to Blu-ray on October 23rd. Specs have yet to be announced, but expect the usual Fox set-up.

Warner Brothers' Steve Nickerson Steps Down

We have received word from a reliable source that the Senior Vice President of Market Management for Warner Home Video, Stephen Nickerson has stepped down from his position. During his tenure, Mr. Nickerson was an outspoken proponent of HD DVD, though Warner Brothers does release titles on both Blu-ray and HD DVD. No word on his successor, or if Warner will change it stance on high definition releases.

Mr. Brooks Added to MGM Release Slate

MGM Home Entertainment has announced that 'Mr. Brooks' will be released for Blu-ray on October 23rd, day-and-date with the DVD release. This is the first of four day-and-date titles expected from MGM for the remainder of the year (according to Monday's press release). No specs have been announced at this time.

Blue Ray Technologies Calls Paramount Deal "Desperate"

Blue Ray Technologies, the first independent Blu-ray manufacturer in the US, has issued a press release regarding the recent exclusivity agreement between Paramount and HD DVD. Commenting on the move, Erick Hansen, founder of Blue Ray Technologies, said, "Toshiba and HD-DVD offered this deal because they are desperate. The public has chosen Blu-ray discs with their pocket books, buying BDs 2-to-1 over HD-DVDs this year."

Mitsubishi Developing 3D Blu-ray Player

Mitsubishi is currently developing a Blu-ray player which can convert 2D images into a 3D viewing experience, on-the-fly. While 3D movies have been around for decades, they have never made it in to the mainstream, mostly because films are required to be shot for 3D. What Mitsubishi is attempting to do, is convert your existing 2D library to stunning 3D on-the-fly, and deliver that technology early next year.

PS3 Goes DVR via PlayTV

Sony Computer Entertainment has announced PlayTV, a device that, when coupled with a PS3, turns the machine into a full digital video recorder (DVR). The device, which currently doesn't have a price or release date, will feature two high definition TV tuners that will allow users to record and/or watch two separate HD video streams on their PS3s.

Dissecting the Insanity: What Does the Paramount Deal Really Mean?

When the press release was issued stating that Paramount would be supporting HD DVD exclusively, it was a huge shock to the Blu-ray community. What would drive a movie studio to abandon the more widely adopted high definition format, abandoning potentially millions of Blu-ray consumers, for an inferior, under-supported format? As we found out, it was a red suitcase filled with $150M and the promise to extend this needless format war for another 18 months.

Exclusive Interview: Marvin Levy

Earlier today, Steven Spielberg's spokesperson and current member of the Board of Governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, Marvin Levy, was kind enough to speak to Blu-ray.com regarding Paramount's recent decision to exclusively back the HD DVD format and Mr. Spielberg's future involvement with high definition media. Mr. Levy did confirm for us that Mr. Spielberg is "certainly a supporter of Blu-ray" and communicated the Spielberg camp's excitement over the upcoming release of 'Close Encounters of the Third Kind', exclusively on Blu-ray.

Spielberg Feeling Blu Too

A noticeable stipulation in the Paramount deal yesterday was that films directed by Steven Spielberg would not be HD DVD exclusive, and could be distributed on either or both formats. At the time, it was not apparent if this meant the famous director was a fan of Blu-ray, but clarification received by High Def Digest suggests that the only Spielberg film coming out in high definition will be the recently announced 'Encounters of the Third Kind' and only on Blu-ray.

Michael Bay Responds to Paramount's Decision: "No Transformers 2 for Me!"

The director behind such films as 'Bad Boys', 'Pearl Harbor', and the recent 'Transformers' movie is upset by Paramount's decision to drop support for Blu-ray. On a post on his personal web forum entitled, "Paramount pisses me off!", Michael Bay says, "I want people to see my movies in the best formats possible. For them to deny people who have Blu-ray sucks! They were progressive by having two formats. No Transformers 2 for me!"

NY Times Confirms $150M Pay-off to Paramount

The NY Times has confirmed via two Viacom executives, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, that Paramount has received a $150M pay-off to support HD DVD exclusively for a period of 18 months. The $150M is comprised of cash and future marketing deals. Also re-confirmed is that the deal includes no films directed by Steven Spielberg.

BDA Responds to Paramount's Decision

In response to Paramount's decision to exclusively support HD DVD, Andy Parsons, Chairman, Blu-ray Disc Association US Promotions Committee had this to say: "The decision seems oddly timed given Blu-ray's tremendous momentum both with consumers and with retail. Blu-ray title sales continue to outpace HD-DVD sales by nearly a 2 to 1 margin, and major retailers have expressed a strong preference for Blu-ray. Moreover, the price delta between HD DVD and Blu-ray players has been greatly reduced in the past few months, a trend that is on its way to eliminating any perceived cost advantage the HD DVD format has claimed to have. Under these circumstances, we can only imagine what could have enticed them to walk away from a format that is clearly selling significantly more software than the ailing HD-DVD format."

Fox Announces and Dates 29 Blu-ray Titles

Fox and MGM have revealed 29 upcoming Blu-ray releases. Included are 19 catalog titles from Fox and MGM, and 10 new release titles to be sold day-and-date with their DVD releases. These titles include 'Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer' and 'Live Free or Die Hard'. The remainder of the day-and-date titles is expected to be announced shortly, as well as specs for each release.

Paramount Drops Blu-ray Support; Does Not Include Spielberg Movies

Despite selling more movies on the Blu-ray format, Paramount has announced today that they will begin supporting HD DVD exclusively. This move, rumored to be driven by a $150M exclusivity deal with the HD DVD group, comes after Paramount began favoring Blu-ray releases with higher quality video encodings and more HD features. The deal covers all of Paramount's properties excluding those directed by Steven Spielberg.

Oldboy Delayed to November; Specs Announced

Tartan Video has revealed that their first US Blu-ray release, 'Oldboy', has been delayed from its original October 23rd release date until November 6th. The movie will come in an unrated form on a BD-50 (some extras on the packed-in DVD). Video will be encoded using AVC and feature a Korean DTS-HD audio track. Extras include numerous commentaries, deleted scenes, featurettes, a documentary, and trailers.

Ocean's Box Set Coming Soon to Blu-ray

Warner Home Video has revealed that they will release the three "Ocean's" movies - 'Ocean's 11', 'Ocean's 12', and 'Ocean's 13' on Blu-ray this fall as a high definition box set. The releases will feature exclusive bonus content only available on the high definition releases, including deleted scenes and never before seen footage. No specs have been announced at this time.

Updated: Jungle Book NOT Announced for Blu-ray

Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment has announced that the animated classic 'Jungle Book' will make its Blu-ray debut October 2nd. This is the first Disney animated feature to be released on Blu-ray, and will be on store shelves day and date with the upcoming DVD release. No specs have been announced at this time.

Disney Announces Four Classics for 2008

Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment has announced the scheduling of four classic movies coming to Blu-ray in 2008, all featuring the latest in Blu-ray interactivity. Coming Spring 2008 is 'The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe' which will be the first Disney title to use the Picture-In-Picture feature of upcoming Blu-ray players. Summer 2008 will see the release of 'National Treasure' which will be the first Disney title to use Internet connectivity. In the Fall, Disney will release 'Finding Nemo' and the first Platinum title on Blu-ray, 'Sleeping Beauty'.

Sony Launches $100M HDNA Ad Campaign

Sony Electronics is set to launch a $100M ad campaign in order to promote what they are calling HDNA - a combination of high definition (HD) and DNA. The campaign will focus on educating the public about Sony high definition products, including Sony Blu-ray players, and how they all integrate to provide the ultimate high definition experience.

Face/Off and Jack Ryan Collection Delayed

Paramount Home Entertainment has updated their release schedule, and two upcoming titles have been delayed into October. The John Woo action film 'Face/Off' has been delayed from September 11th to October 30th. Also, an interesting note, the "2-disc" verbiage has been removed from the cover, though no specs have changed. The upcoming 'Jack Ryan Collection' has also been delayed, from September 25th to October 23rd. No specs have been changed.

Polar Express Announced for Blu-ray

Warner Home Video has announced that the CGI animated film 'The Polar Express' will be released for Blu-ray on October 30th. The film will come on a BD-25 with 2.40:1 1080p VC-1 video and a Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack. This film was previously released on HD DVD, and is one of the "make-up" titles which Warner promised to release before the end of the year.

Digital Video Essentials HD Comes to Blu-ray

DVD International has announced that Joe Kane's 'Digital Video Essentials: HD Basics' will be coming to Blu-ray on October 30th. 'DVE: HD' is the follow-up to the award-winning 'Digital Video Essentials' disc which assisted new DVD owners in calibration of their displays. Now, Joe Kane returns to assist new Blu-ray owners with calibration of their high definition displays.

The Omega Man Coming to Blu-ray

Warner Home Video has announced that they will be bringing the Sci-Fi classic 'The Omega Man' to Blu-ray on November 27th. No specs have been released at this time, but expect the usual 1080p VC-1 transfer and Dolby Digital surround sound audio track. Extras have also not been mentioned, but they should be similar to the DVD release.

Blu-ray Burner Demand Rises for Q4

Taiwan Blu-ray burner manufacturers are reporting that they have received some rather large inquiries and orders for Blu-ray burning PC drives. Because prices for BD burners remains high, orders are usually for anywhere between 2,000 to 3,000 units. However, recent inquires and orders by US and European companies are now ten times that, between 20,000 to 30,000 units, signifying that retailers and computer manufacturers may be preparing for a Blu-ray push this fall.

Disney Magical Blu-ray Tour Video (HiHD)

The World is Blu

According to a report by Media Control GfK International regarding international high definition sales during the first half of the year, Blu-ray is benefiting from a nearly 3:1 sales advantage in non-US countries. The report states that 650,000 movies were sold on the Blu-ray format the first two quarters, compared to only 240,000 on HD DVD.

Cars Blu-ray Release Detailed

Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment has revealed some details about the upcoming Blu-ray release of Pixar's 'Cars'. Viewers will have the option to select "Radiator Springs" or "Emeryville" upon loading up the title screen. "Radiator Springs" will bring the user to the "Car Finder" game as well as numerous featurettes and bonus material, while "Emeryville" will allow the user to view the movie using Cine-Explore - a dashboard type menu which allows the viewer to watch extra content during the film.

Blu-ray Disc Sales Continue Dominance

According to Home Media Research, during the first half of 2007 a total of 1.6M movies were sold on the Blu-ray format. Rival HD DVD sold less than half during the same time period, with a total of 795,000 movies sold. Since the launch of the formats, Blu-ray has amassed sales of 2.2M movies compared to just 1.5M on HD DVD (which includes data collected through July).
