Dracula (1958) 4K Blu-ray

Warner Archive, in association with Hammer Films, is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Terence Fisher's Dracula (1958), starring Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Michael Gough, Melissa Stribling, and Carol Marsh. The releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 27.

One Night Only Collector's Edition 4K Blu-ray

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced that it will release on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray Will Gluck's romantic dramedy One Night Only (2026), starring Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner, Bobby Cannavale, Molly Ringwald, and LeVar Burton. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

Gwendoline Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray

Severin Films has dated and detailed its upcoming Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray release of Just Jaeckin's Gwendoline (1984), starring Tawny Kitaen, Brent Huff, Zabou Breitman, Bernadette Lafont, and Jean Rougerie. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on November 24.

This Week on Blu-ray: August 31-September 6

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

Ridley Scott Feeling Blu

Medusa Distribution, an Italian film distributor and exclusive HD DVD supporter, will release 'Kingdom of Heaven' as their first Blu-ray title. The move comes after the film's director, Ridley Scott, insisted that they release the title on Blu-ray. The acclaimed director joins the ranks of Steven Spielberg and Francis Ford Coppola as filmmakers who insist their films get distributed on Blu-ray.

Harman Kardon Shows Blu-ray Media Center

The Harman Kardon DVC600 Home Media Center will allow for the recording and playback of Blu-ray disc media via a built-in Blu-ray disc writer. Running on Unix-based software, the device can record up to 8 simultaneous HD programs to a Blu-ray disc or hard drive. The DVC600, which is expected to cost between $3000-$4000 when released, is the first Blu-ray product from Harman Kardon, and hopefully a sign of more to come.

Pioneer Introduced the BD-LX70A

Coming off the success of their BD-LX70, Pioneer has announced that they will soon debut the next generation of Blu-ray players - the LX70A. The player will differ from the current model mostly with its additional audio support. The LX70A will allow for the passing of bitstream data (via HDMI v1.3) for Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio.

Hitachi Reveals Two Blu-ray Camcorders

Hitachi has revealed two Blu-ray camcorders, the BD70E and BD7HE, which recorder full 1080p HD video onto an 8cm 7.5GB Blu-ray disc. The BD7HE comes with both a Blu-ray disc writer and 30GB hard drive, allowing for up to 8 hours of HD content to be recorded and multiple Blu-ray copies to be burned for quick distribution.

Sony Europe Provide Blu-ray Social Media

Sony Europe is continuing to support Blu-ray information distribution using a host of new tools for bloggers and social network users. Since being released, the "blue laser" video and iCal program have become popular additions to many consumers' websites and desktops. Sony will soon introduce widgets and customized content to expand on that success.

Ocean's 11, 12, and 13 Scheduled for Blu-ray

Warner Home Video has scheduled all three 'Ocean's' movies for a November 13th Blu-ray release. Video will be presented at 1080p using VC-1; no word on audio support at this time. Extras will mirror the DVD releases (including those found on the day-and-date DVD release of 'Ocean's 13'). It is still unknown if these films will appear as a box set (as previously reported) or as individual titles.

Blu-ray Dominates HD Sales

New data from Home Media Research shows that Blu-ray is continuing to lead in high definition media sales. As of August 5th, the top 10 best selling high definition movies are all available on Blu-ray, and half of those exclusive to the format. Warner Brother's '300' leads the pack, followed by 'The Departed', 'Casino Royale', 'Planet Earth', and 'Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest'.

Alticast Demonstrates BD-Java Software

Alticast has announced the availability of AltiCaptor Blu-ray Disc Java, software that, when combined with the Broadcom's BCM7440 single chip Blu-ray hardware, provides one of the most advanced Blu-ray platforms on the market today. Alticast will be demonstrating the application at their booth at IFA beginning today.

Fox Specs Die Hard and Fantastic Four

Fox Home Entertainment has released the official specs for 'Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer', 'Live Free or Die Hard' (Unrated), and 'Diehard Trilogy' Blu-ray releases. 'Fantastic Four' will get AVC 1080p video and DTS-HD MA audio on a BD-50, and is set to be released on October 2nd in North America and October 9th internationally. All four 'Die Hard' movies will see similar treatment, and are scheduled for a November 20th release in North America and October 28th internationally.

Showtime's The Tudors Coming to Blu-ray

During the BDA conference at IFA, it was revealed that the first season of the Showtime series 'The Tudors' will be coming soon to Blu-ray. Two seasons of 'The Weeds' have already made in onto Blu-ray, so this will be yet another showing for the premium channel. No specs or release date was announced at this time.

SPHE Eclipses 250K Units in Europe; Nears 1M in US

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced that Blu-ray disc sales from the company have eclipsed 250,000 units in Europe and are nearing the 1,000,000 mark in the US. In Europe, similar to the US, Blu-ray is outselling HD DVD by a rate of 2:1 and continues to be the dominate high definition format.

Acer Joins BDA

The Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) has announced that Acer has joined the Blu-ray disc association. Acer is a computer manufacturer who recently announced plans to purchase US-based PC manufacturer Gateway. Acer plans to add Blu-ray players and burners to their line of desktop and laptop PCs.

Loewe Introduces Blutech Vision Blu-ray Player

Loewe has introduced the Blutech Vision Blu-ray player. Very little is known about the sleek player at this time, but we do know it will support 1080p24 output, and decoding support for Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD. Also, at a height of only 6cm, it is one of the thinest Blu-ray players on the market. Hopefully we will learn more about this player as IFA continues.

Sharp Aquos BD-HP20S Blu-ray Player

Sharp has revealed their first Blu-ray disc player, the BD-HP20S. Though we have seen it many times, IFA will be the first time we get specs regarding the upcoming player. It was revealed during their press conference, and while no specs or release date was given, Sharp made the statement that they would one day be the largest manufacturer of Blu-ray players. More to come on this player as the show officially kicks off.

Philips Announces New Blu-ray Player

Philips has announced the BDP-7100, the follow-up to their BDP-9000 first generation player. It will feature support for 1080p24/60 output via HDMI, as well as Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD internal decoding. The player will be available soon across Europe. No price has been announced at this time.

Disney Specs Lost: Season 3

Buena Vista Home Entertainment has released the specs for the highly anticipated upcoming Blu-ray release of 'LOST: The Complete Third Season, The Unexplored Experience'. Spanning six discs, the 23 episodes will be presented in 1080p with PCM audio. A special Blu-ray feature will provide viewers some "truths" about each episode via a interactive BD-J feature.

Fox Announces Spec for Master and Commander

Fox Home Entertainment has announced the specs for the upcoming Blu-ray release of 'Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World', due on store shelves October 2nd. The film will come on a BD-50 featuring 1080p AVC video and 5.1 DTS-HD MA audio. Extras include two trivia tracks, a pop-up BD-J map (which will allow you to locate the HMS Surprise throughout the film), personal scene selection, search content option, and the theatrical trailer.

China Hualu Group Co., Ltd Joins BDA

The BDA has announced that China Hualu Group Co. has joined the BDA as a contributing member, meaning they will have input on Blu-ray development. They also have a booth at IFA, so hopefully we will soon see some new products come from this company, which currently produces DVD players and recorders.

BenQ Announces $199 BD-ROM PC Drive

BenQ has announced the BR1000, a $199 Blu-ray BD-ROM PC drive. This will be the first true BD-ROM drive, as doesn't support writing of any optical disc media. It is expected to launch in September. Also announced, is the BR1001 Blu-ray Disc Writer, which will support burning of BD, DVD, and CD media. Also available in September for $599.

Daewoo Displays Profile 2.0 Player

Daewoo has revealed the first Blu-ray disc player to support Profile 2.0, meaning it supports all the features of Profile 1.1 (like Picture-in-Picture) as well as access for web-enabled content. Not much was revealed about the DBP-1000, but we do know that it will support 1080p output via HDMI. No price or release date were announced at this time.

Sony Announces New Blu-ray Player

Sony has announced the BDP-S500 Blu-ray disc player, the high-end version of the already available BDP-S300. It will support 1080p24/60 video and 7.1 audio output, as well as a motorized front panel. The new player will also support Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD internal decoding, and will also pass the bit stream for Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD via HDMI v1.3 to a capable receiver. No price or release date has been set at this time.

Samsung Details Upcoming Blu-ray Players

Samsung has announced the specs for their upcoming BD-P1400 and BD-P2400 Blu-ray disc players, as well as their BD-UP5000 universal player. The BD-P1400, which is available in September, will feature 1080p24/60 playback, 5.1 channel audio output, support for Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, and DTS-HD, HDMI v1.3, and an Ethernet port for updating firmware and accessing web-based content.

Studio Canal Now Supports Blu-ray

Studio Canal has revealed an upcoming Blu-ray boxset for the three 'Les Bronzes' films, making it the first Blu-ray release to come from the formerly HD DVD exclusive studio. The Studio Canal library is very extensive, as they distribute titles for many of the major studios. No release date specs have been released at this time.

BDA Has Big Plans for IFA

The Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) will be one of the main attraction at this year's IFA Consumer Electronics Tradeshow, which officially kicks-off on Friday. At their display, the BDA will display one of the largest showcases of Blu-ray technology, including consumer electronics, professional equipment, and movie media.

Fox Announces Specs for 28 Weeks Later

Fox Home Entertainment has announced the specs for their upcoming October 9th release of '28 Weeks Later'. The title will be encoded using AVC (MPEG-4) at 1080p, and feature an DTS-HD MA audio track. Extras include an audio commentary with the director and writer, a full-length documentary, three making-of featurettes, two deleted scenes, and trailers.

CE Manufacturers to Support DTS-HD MA

DTS has announced that their booth at CEDIA will feature numerous electronic devices from major consumer electronics manufacturers that support DTS-HD Master Audio (MA). These companies include Sony, Samsung, Denon, Pioneer, and Yamaha. DTS-HD MA is a lossless audio codec providing "studio master" quality for Blu-ray discs and is extensively used by Fox and MGM on their Blu-ray releases.

Singulus Reports New Blu-ray Production Line Orders

Singulus has announced that they have received two new orders for Blu-ray production lines to be delivered to customers in Asia and Europe. These new orders clearly show the momentum Blu-ray is gaining internationally. Initially, these two plants will exclusively produce BD-25s, but can easily be upgraded for BD-50 production.

Panasonic DMP-BD10 Gets Firmware v2.3

Panasonic has released the latest firmware upgrade for their DMP-BD10 and DMP-BD10a Blu-ray players. The release notes state that the upgrade is for "playability and stability" which is most likely code for BD-J enhancements. It is recommended that all owners upgrade their machines to ensure they comply with the slew of new releases hit store shelves in the coming months.

Paramount Deal: Consumers Lose

If you are heading out to your local movie retailer today, keep an eye out for a Blu-ray copy of 'Blades of Glory' as a few copies have reportedly made it to store shelves. If you find a copy, you will have the opportunity to own a prime example of how the recent Paramount deal hasn't hurt just Blu-ray consumers, but all high definition consumers.

Pathfinder Announced for Blu-ray

Fox Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring 'Pathfinder' to Blu-ray on November 20th. The film will be released in an unrated form, with 1080p MPEG-2 video and DTS-HD MA audio. Extras include an audio commentary, numerous featurettes, and deleted scenes.
