The Blu-ray.com Folding@home team has become one of the top 100 teams (out of over 100,000 teams) in the shared-computing project. When not using their PS3s to watch Blu-ray movies, many forum members run the Folding@home software preloaded on the machine.
While you don't need a PS3 to contribute (the software works on any Windows, OSX, or Linux system), the awesome computing power of the console has contributed greatly to the team effort. Currently, the team has completed 75,833 work units, amassing 20,726,498 points for the program. Thanks to our team members and a constant flow of new members joining the team, our folding speed is increasing daily and the Blu-ray.com Folding@home team is now the 34th fastest folding team in the world.
Folding@home is a project run by Stanford University which utilizes shared computing in order to fold proteins. When these proteins fold incorrectly, serious illnesses like Alzheimer's, CJD, ALS, Huntington's, and Parkinson's disease, as well as many Cancers can form. By folding these proteins in a computer, and seeing the results, Stanford University is able to see the results, learn more about folding proteins, and hopefully one day find a cure.
