Dracula (1958) 4K Blu-ray

Warner Archive, in association with Hammer Films, is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Terence Fisher's Dracula (1958), starring Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Michael Gough, Melissa Stribling, and Carol Marsh. The releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 27.

One Night Only Collector's Edition 4K Blu-ray

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced that it will release on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray Will Gluck's romantic dramedy One Night Only (2026), starring Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner, Bobby Cannavale, Molly Ringwald, and LeVar Burton. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

Gwendoline Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray

Severin Films has dated and detailed its upcoming Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray release of Just Jaeckin's Gwendoline (1984), starring Tawny Kitaen, Brent Huff, Zabou Breitman, Bernadette Lafont, and Jean Rougerie. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on November 24.

This Week on Blu-ray: August 31-September 6

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

Blu-ray Sales Up 91%

A recent report from the Digital Entertainment Group (DEG) shows that sales of Blu-ray titles during the first six months of the year are up 91% - to $407M - compared to the first half of 2008. The increase in title sales has also affected sales of Blu-ray players, which are up 25% from the same period last year to 2M units.

Soul Power Announced for UK Blu-ray

Eureka Entertainment has announced that they will bring the Jeffrey Levy-Hinte documentary 'Soul Power' to the UK for Blu-ray on November 16th day-and-date with the DVD release. As part of the company's Master of Cinema Series, the disc promises the best presentation ever of the 3-day Zaire 1974 music festival.

Macrovision Changes Name and Strategy

Copy-protection company Macrovision is getting a major overhaul. As of today, the new name of the company will be Rovi, and its new corporate focus will be on media content, including its leading product, a program guide called "Liquid," which will formally launch in early 2010. The company is speaking with Blu-ray player manufacturers about the benefits of including Liquid into their models.

Season One of Clone Wars Announced for Blu-ray

Lucasfilm Ltd. in conjunction with Warner Home Video have announced that they will bring 'Star Wars: The Clone Wars - The Complete Season One' to Blu-ray on November 3rd, day-and-date with the DVD release. Technical specs have not been announced at this time, though you can expect to see a 1080p VC-1 video presentation accompanied by a Dolby Digital soundtrack.

Ghosts of Girlfriends Past Blu-ray Announced

New Line Home Entertainment, in conjunction with Warner Home Video, has announced that it will release the romantic comedy 'Ghosts of Girlfriends Past' on Blu-ray on September 22, day-and-date with the DVD. This movie stars Matthew McConaughey and Jennifer Garner, and it's about a committed bachelor who is visited by the ghosts of his former girlfriends, who take him on a trip through all his failed relationships.

Dirty Harry Collection in Amazon Gold Box

In day four of its "Movie Collections Week", Amazon is offering today 'Dirty Harry: Ultimate Collector's Edition', which only today can be bought on Blu-ray for $56.99, which works out at an average of $11.4 per movie. It might be noted that all deals of the day this week have been movie collections from the same studio (Warner), which gives us an idea of what to expect for tomorrow.

Two New Blu-ray Players from Marantz

Marantz is set to launch its new generation of Blu-ray players, under model numbers BD5004 and BD7004. Both support BD-Live (Profile 2.0) and advanced audio codecs (Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD) bitstreaming. They both handle DivX files, as well as AVCHD, WMA, MP3 and JPEG, whether read from a disc or from an SD Card.

When we informed you on the upcoming Blu-ray release of the long-awaited 'Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon' only as part of a so-called trilogy, we also remarked it was coming out separately in the UK. Now the title has hit store shelves, and not only is the disc confirmed as region-free, it also comes (at least initially) in an attractive steelbook.

Che the Argentine Guerilla Set Coming from Optimum

Yet to be released in North America, Steven Soderbergh's epic Che (2008) arrives on Blu-ray as a single set release on June 29, courtesy of British distributors Optimum Home Entertainment. The set includes both the Che Part 1 - The Argentine and Che Part 2 - Guerrilla films.

For All Mankind Gets UK Date

Eureka Entertainment has announced that they will release 'For All Mankind' for Blu-ray in the UK on November 16th, day-and-date with the DVD release. As part of the company's "Masters of Cinema Series", it appears this disc will be a clone of the US version being released today by Criterion. This includes a 1080p AVC video presentation accompanied by a 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack.

For years, HBO had dominated television with their award-winning dramas that captivated millions of viewers on Sunday night and were the main topic of discussion around water coolers on Monday morning. That all changed when ex-Sopranos writer Matthew Weiner released upon the world his dramatic look at the 1960's world of advertising, and produced the first real threat to HBO's dominance. Today, 'Mad Men: Season Two' is being released on Blu-ray just in time for the August debut of the highly anticipated third season.

Terminator Salvation Gets November Date in UK

The UK branch of Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced and detailed the release of 'Terminator Salvation' for November 23, day-and-date with the DVD. Note that this is a Warner release in the US but the home video rights in Europe belong to Sony. Video will be 2.39:1 AVC, accompanied by a multichannel lossless audio track.

Gran Torino Stays atop the UK Charts

In its second week, 'Gran Torino' continued to be the top-selling title on Blu-ray in the UK, according to information from the British Video Association for the week ended July 12. The three following places were taken by as many day-and-date releases: 'The International', 'Marley and Me', and 'Bronson'.

Jason Aldean Live Blu-ray Coming Up

Eagle Rock Entertainment has announced that it will release 'Jason Aldean: Wide Open Live and More' on Blu-ray on August 25, day-and-date with the DVD. This disc contains the performance by this country musician at a sold-out Knoxville Coliseum, on March 6, 2009. No specifications or special features are announced.

Three Warner Animated BDs for the Holidays

Warner has announced a trio of children's animated titled for release on Blu-ray on October 6: 'A Charlie Brown Christmas', 'Dr. Seuss' Horton Hears a Who!' and 'Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas' (not to be mistaken with the theatrical feature-length movies). All three titles will be released as "Deluxe Editions".

Two Restored Todd-AO Classics from Fox Coming to Blu-ray

20th Century Fox Home Entertainment has commissioned HTV illuminate Arts-Media-Entertainment to restore two of its classics for a Blu-ray release later this year: 'The Agony and the Ecstasy' and 'Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines', two 1965 films shot in Todd-AO (a film format that used 65mm negatives and 70mm release prints).

The British Film Institute (BFI) has announced that they will bring the Kevin Brownlow and Andrew Mollo film 'Winstanley' to Blu-ray in the UK on August 3rd, day-and-date with the DVD release. This title was originally released on April 27th, but it was exclusive to UK merchant MovieMail. In August, it will be available to all UK retailers for the first time.

Paramount Home Entertainment has unceremoniously pulled five upcoming titles from its Blu-ray release schedule, originally slated for September 15: '48 Hrs.', 'Escape from L.A.', 'K-19: The Widowmaker', 'The Firm', and 'The Score'. No reason has been given for the delay, nor has a new date been announced.

Universal Studios Home Entertainment has re-announced the Blu-ray release of 'Army of Darkness: Screwhead Edition' to September 15th, day-and-date with the DVD re-release. Originally announced with a May release date, the title was pulled off retailer lists for unknown reasons. Technical specs have not been changed, with the title coming on a BD-25, with 1080p VC-1 video accompanied by a 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack.
