BD Sales Information: September 7-13 (Update)

The Jason Statham actioner 'Crank 2: High Voltage' was far and away the top-selling title on Blu-ray during the week ended September 13, according to Nielsen VideoScan. The sales leader of the previous week, 'Gladiator', was number two, while the number one in overall packaged-media sales, 'The Office: Season Five', got third place.

Here is the Blu-ray top 10 (previous-week ranking in parenthesis):
  1. • Crank 2: High Voltage
  2. (1) Gladiator
  3. • The Office: Season Five
  4. • Fringe: The Complete First Season
  5. (3) Earth
  6. (2) Braveheart
  7. (9) The Dark Knight
  8. (4) State of Play
  9. (r) Iron Man
  10. (6) Watchmen
One new release that is notoriously absent from the top 20 is Paramount's Wayans brothers parody movie 'Dance Flick'. Apparently, not even being released on BD a month ahead of the DVD (see our post of July 31) helped. At any rate, not this movie.

Also, out of the dozen catalog titles that were released on September 8, only one managed to make the top 20. Lionsgate's 'Requiem for a Dream', despite being totally outside of the expected BD demographic (a no-action film with a dramatic subject matter), got in the charts at number 13, beating horror and sci-fi movies - probably thanks in part to its very aggressive pricing during release week (which is still in place as of this writing).

Regarding Blu-ray market share for the week's releases, the title with the highest ratio was again 'Crank 2', which got 22% of its total sales from Blu-ray. 'Fringe: The Complete First Season' had 20%, and 'The Office: Season Five' 6%.

For reference, Lionsgate claimed on a press release that 'Crank 2' sold nearly 1.4 million DVD units in its first week, although the studio didn't specify whether that figure referred only to sales to consumers or if it included disc sales to rental.

Overall, BD sales revenue was $12.05 million, up 40.56% from the same week last year. DVD sales revenue was $103.87 million, down 32.36% year-on-year.

Blu-ray accounted for 10.4% of total packaged-media sales revenue.
