Dracula (1958) 4K Blu-ray

Warner Archive, in association with Hammer Films, is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Terence Fisher's Dracula (1958), starring Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Michael Gough, Melissa Stribling, and Carol Marsh. The releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 27.

One Night Only Collector's Edition 4K Blu-ray

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced that it will release on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray Will Gluck's romantic dramedy One Night Only (2026), starring Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner, Bobby Cannavale, Molly Ringwald, and LeVar Burton. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

Gwendoline Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray

Severin Films has dated and detailed its upcoming Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray release of Just Jaeckin's Gwendoline (1984), starring Tawny Kitaen, Brent Huff, Zabou Breitman, Bernadette Lafont, and Jean Rougerie. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on November 24.

This Week on Blu-ray: August 31-September 6

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

Warner BDs on Short Wait at Netflix after 4-Week Delay

In a conference during the CES tech fair shortly after the announcement of a four-week window for Warner titles, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings stated that they should be "fully in stock" after 28 days. Now it's been four weeks since the release date of The Invention of Lying and Whiteout, and, according to information from blu-ray.com staff and forum members, both movies appear with an availability status of "short wait" for most Netflix subscribers.

James Cameron Reveals Avatar Blu-ray Release Date

In an interview yesterday, director James Cameron leaked the release date for what will be the first Blu-ray edition of his megablockbuster movie Avatar: it will be on Earth Day. "It's all right on schedule," said Cameron. "We'll do the Blu-ray and the standard def DVD April 22nd, that's our plan as of right now, and that'll be pretty much bare bones. And then we'll do a value-added DVD and a 3D Blu-ray in I think November sometime."

Blu-ray Sales, Feb. 8-14: Couples Retreat Gets BD Love (Update)

Couples Retreat was the top-selling title on Blu-ray during the week ended February 14, according to Nielsen VideoScan First Alert. It generated nearly 20% of its unit sales from Blu-ray Disc, a record percentage for a PG-13 comedy. Zombieland slipped to second place, and The Time Traveler's Wife entered at number three. Funny Games Blu-ray Announced

UK distributor Kaleidoscope Entertainment has announced that on March 1 it will release Funny Games, the English-language remake of Michael Haneke's provocative and shocking film, directed by Haneke himself and starring Naomi Watts and Tim Roth. This movie had already been released by the defunct Tartan Video in July 2008; that BD is now out of print, although some copies still appear for sale from time to time.

Blu-ray Rentals at Redbox Kiosks by Mid-Year

Yesterday, just after the announcement of an agreement between Redbox and Warner Home Video on delayed movie rentals, Paul Davis, CEO of Coinstar (the parent company of Redbox), said that Redbox would probably begin offering Blu-ray Disc rentals by mid-2010. He also stated that Blu-ray “strengthens our position to meet consumer demand.”

9 Songs, Best Buy-Exclusive Vengeance Trilogy on Blu-ray

Palisades Tartan has announced its immediate Blu-ray plans. As previously reported, Park Chan-wook's Vengeance Trilogy will be released on BD on March 16. However, it will be a Best Buy exclusive until June. On May 18, the studio will release Michael Winterbottom's controversial shags-and-gigs movie 9 Songs.

IMAX Under the Sea Announced on Blu-ray

Warner Home Video has announced IMAX: Under the Sea for release on a BD/DVD/Digital Copy combo pack on March 30. This documentary on marine life in the Pacific, narrated by Jim Carrey, was released in IMAX 3-D theaters in 2009. However, there is no mention in the Blu-ray announcement of the inclusion of a stereoscopic version of any kind.

Gone with the Wind 3-Disc Scarlett Edition Blu-ray Announced

Warner Home Video has announced yet another Blu-ray release for the all-time classic Gone with the Wind. This one is called the Scarlett Edition: it consists of three discs and comes with all the disc-based features found in the 70th Anniversary Ultimate Collector's Edition (including the six-hour documentary When the Lion Roars on the history of MGM), but not the CD soundtrack sampler, or the memorabilia. Street date is set for April 13, and list price is $49.99.

Pre-Nolan Batman Movies Get Separate Blu-ray Releases

Warner Home Video has announced that, on May 4, it will release Batman, Batman Returns, Batman Forever and Batman & Robin on Blu-ray in individual releases. Until now, the Burton/Schumacher canon of Batman movies was available in Batman: The Motion Picture Anthology, released in March 2009. Batman was also available in a Digibook-styled 20th anniversary edition Blu-ray.

Deal of the Day: X-Men Trilogy + Wolverine Blu-ray $50.99

This Wednesday, Amazon has an interesting Blu-ray related deal of the day: up to midnight PST, you can order X-Men Trilogy + X-Men Origins: Wolverine on Blu-ray for only $50.99 (58% off MSRP). This works out to under $13 per movie, or a total cost of about $8 less than if each item were bought separately.

David Tennant's Hamlet Announced on Blu-ray

Warner Home Video, in conjunction with BBC, has announced the Blu-ray release of the recent smash hit Royal Shakespeare Company production of Hamlet, starring David Tennant as the Prince of Denmark and Patrick Stewart as Claudius. The release date for this title has been set for May 4, shortly after airing on PBS's Great Performances.

Metropolis Director's Cut in UK Theaters Before Blu-ray

Eureka Entertainment has announced the continuation of its long association with Fritz Lang's 1927 cinema classic Metropolis, a restored and reconstructed “Director's Cut” of which received its highly anticipated world premiere at the Berlin International Film Festival on February 12. UK audiences will get their first glimpse of the film returned to its original glory (for the first time in 83 years, after materials were cut and lost after its 1927 premiere) when the film is re-released theatrically nationwide later in the year, followed by a new Blu-ray edition in The Masters of Cinema Series.

Redbox Agrees to 4-Week Window with Warner, Will Expand Blu-ray

Today, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Group and Redbox announced a new multi-year distribution agreement that will make WHV new release DVD and Blu-ray titles available to Redbox customers after a 28-day window. The first title with delayed rental availability will be The Blind Side, which goes on sale on March 23 and thus will only appear at Redbox kiosks from April 20.

MGM Re-releasing Movies as DVD/Blu-ray Combos

On April 6, MGM Home Entertainment will re-release 16 of its catalog titles in DVD/Blu-ray combo editions. Note that they will all be two-disc releases, not two-sided "flippers." List price has been aggressively set at $19.99. Unlike previous combo releases by MGM and by other studios, these will come in the taller cases typically used for DVDs.

Up in the Air Blu-ray Announced

Paramount Home Entertainment has announced Up in the Air for Blu-ray release on March 9. This movie, co-written and directed by Jason Reitman and starring George Clooney, received six Academy Award nominations including Best Picture, Best Actor (Clooney), Best Supporting Actress (Vera Farmiga and Anna Kendrick), Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay.

Rumor: PS3 Firmware 3.20 with 3D Support Coming Soon

According to video games site VG247, the upcoming new firmware for the PS3, version 3.20, will enable 3-D video output, presumably for games only. Support for 3-D movies will be added in another upgrade later in the year. Note that you also need a 3-D TV and the required glasses to get the full experience.

Departures Blu-ray in April

An early announcement to UK retailers indicates that, on April 26, Arrow Films will release Departures (Okuribito), the Japanese movie that last year won the Academy Award in the Best Foreign Language Film category. No information regarding technical specifications, special features or region coding is available at this time.

Two Chaplin Films Announced for Blu-ray

UK film distributor Park Circus has announced that its new home entertainment label will launch in the second quarter of 2010 and that it will start with a bang, by being the first to release movies directed by Charlie Chaplin in high definition, licensed from the MK2 library. The Kid and The Great Dictator will see the light on Blu-ray on May 10.

I Sell the Dead Blu-ray Announced

MPI Media Group has announced I Sell The Dead for Blu-ray release on March 30. This horror comedy about Victorian grave-robbers (with some vampires and zombies also thrown in the mix), starring Dominic Monaghan and Ron Perlman, was highly acclaimed when it premiered at the 2009 Slamdance Film Festival.

The Baader Meinhof Complex Blu-ray Detailed

MPI Media Group has officially announced and detailed the Blu-ray release of The Baader Meinhof Complex, which is coming out on March 30. This 2008 film on the history of the German armed group Red Army Faction was nominated for an Academy Award in the Best Foreign Language Film category. The Blu-ray release will contain over two hours of bonus content.

Studio Canal Announces May Blu-ray Wave

French distributor Studio Canal has announced eight movies for Blu-ray release on May. Titles recently released were more of the arthouse type, but this new batch has a heavier presence of 1980s guilty pleasures, balanced out with some classic Pacino for good measure. There is no information regarding region coding.

This Monday, Amazon has a Blu-ray hardware Deal of the Day that will undoubtedly raise some eyebrows. Up to midnight PST, you can buy the DMP-BD70V Blu-ray Disc/VHS Combination Player for $139.99 (65% off MSRP). While this combination of video formats will be an abomination for the more tech-savvy, it may be useful for those that still keep or use VHS tapes.

Twilight New Moon UK Blu-ray Detailed

E1 Entertainment has detailed the contents of the UK edition of The Twilight Saga: New Moon, which will come out on March 22 and include several special features absent from the US edition or any of the domestic retailer exclusive releases, such as deleted and extended scenes and a UK-exclusive fan event Q&A. At the moment, there is no information regarding region coding.

The price-tracking tools at blu-ray.com have made it unnecessary to post as many deal-related news as in the past, but this is just too good not to mention. Early today, Amazon dropped the price of The Wizard of Oz (3-disc Emerald Edition) to $16.49, or 67% off list price. The price history for this Blu-ray shows that this is by far the lowest it has been.

Criterion Blu-ray in May: Brakhage, M, Stagecoach, Walkabout

In May, Criterion will take Blu-ray viewers on wild rides—way out west with John Wayne, to the Australian outback with an aboriginal guide, to the darkest corners of the outlaw mind and the outermost regions of experimental film. On May 11, the studio will release Fritz Lang's psychological thriller M. A week later, Nicolas Roeg's spellbinding Walkabout will hit store shelves. Finally, on May 25, Criterion will release By Brakhage: An Anthology, Volumes One and Two and John Ford's seminal western Stagecoach.

Saving Private Ryan Sapphire Edition Blu-ray Detailed

Paramount Home Entertainment has announced the details for Saving Private Ryan: Sapphire Edition, scheduled for release on May 4. This two-disc edition includes over three hours of bonus features that take viewers into the past for a look at the real-life events that inspired the film and behind-the-scenes to explore the challenges of bringing that past to life. The film is presented in 1080p High Definition with English 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio, French, Spanish and Portuguese 5.1 Dolby Digital, along with English, English SDH, French, Spanish and Portuguese subtitles.

Europe: Blu-ray Unit Sales Increased 167% in 2009

According to the Digital Entertainment Group Europe (DEGE), Blu-ray disc unit sales soared 167% in Europe last year. During the course of 2009, 22 million Blu-ray Discs were sold. Sales revenue was 443 million euros ($603 million), up 109% over sales revenue in 2008. The growth was attributed to marketing campaigns, and lower prices in HDTV and Blu-ray.

New Packaging for Battlestar Galactica Blu-ray Revealed

Universal Studios Home Entertainment has finally put up cover art for the upcoming rerelease of Battlestar Galactica: The Complete Series Box Set, which will street on April 6. According to the description by the studio, the packaging consists of "Digipaks with outer box". This release will contain the direct-to-video movie The Plan, not included in the previously-released Limited Edition set.

Wal-Mart Exclusive Ultimate Fan Edition of New Moon Blu-ray

Wal-Mart has announced that, on March 20, it will exclusively offer The Twilight Saga: New Moon (Ultimate Fan Edition). In addition to the content on the Special Edition Blu-ray of New Moon, the Ultimate Fan Edition will come with collectible lenticular packaging and include a special seven-minute sneak peek of the third installment of the saga, Eclipse, slated for a theatrical release on June 30.

Blu-ray Sales, Feb. 1-7: Zombieland Makes a Killing

The horror comedy Zombieland was the top-selling title on Blu-ray during the week ended February 7, according to data from Nielsen VideoScan First Alert. The previous week's number one, Michael Jackson's This is It, dropped to second place. Meanwhile, the martial arts movie Ong Bak 2: The Beginning managed a record 43% Blu-ray market share.
