  Warner Archive, in association with Hammer Films, is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Terence Fisher's Dracula (1958), starring Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Michael Gough, Melissa Stribling, and Carol Marsh. The releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 27.

  One Night Only Collector's Edition 4K Blu-ray

  Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced that it will release on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray Will Gluck's romantic dramedy One Night Only (2026), starring Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner, Bobby Cannavale, Molly Ringwald, and LeVar Burton. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

  Gwendoline Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray

  Severin Films has dated and detailed its upcoming Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray release of Just Jaeckin's Gwendoline (1984), starring Tawny Kitaen, Brent Huff, Zabou Breitman, Bernadette Lafont, and Jean Rougerie. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on November 24.

  This Week on Blu-ray: August 31-September 6

  For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

  An early announcement to retailers indicates that, on December 21, Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment will release The Family Guy Trilogy (comprised of Blue Harvest -unreleased on Blu-ray separately-, Family Guy Presents: Something Something Something Dark Side and Family Guy: It's A Trap).

  Del Toro Blu-ray Collection Announced in the UK

  Optimum Home Entertainment has officially announced the release of The Guillermo del Toro Collection for October 25. This Blu-ray box set will include the three Spanish-language films from the Mexican filmmaker: Cronos (1993); The Devil's Backbone (El espinazo del Diablo, 2001) and Pan's Labyrinth (El laberinto del fauno, 2006) - now with lossless audio. It will be presented in a limited, numbered deluxe pop-up book style box that pays tribute to Del Toro's imagination.

  Ben 10 Ultimate Alien Blu-ray Announced

  Warner Home Video has announced Ben 10: Ultimate Alien Volume 1 for Blu-ray release on January 11. This two-disc set will include the first 10 episodes of this all-new series from the successful Ben 10 franchise, aired on Cartoon Network.

  Amazon's current Blu-ray Boxed Set of the Week is for the 4-movie set Ray Harryhausen Collection (comprised of It Came From Beneath the Sea, Earth vs. the Flying Saucers, 20 Million Miles to Earth and The 7th Voyage of Sinbad), which which can now be had for only $49.99 (54% off, or about $12.50 per movie). The price tracker shows that this is the lowest this compilation has been. This offer is valid through October 2.

  DVD-grade Soundtrack for Grindhouse Blu-ray

  As previously reported, the eagerly-awaited Grindhouse: 2-Disc Collector's Edition - featuring the full "Grindhouse experience" directed by Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino - is due out on Blu-ray on October 5. Technical specifications hadn't been officially listed, but a member of the Blu-ray.com forum has already got a copy and informed that it only contains a lossy Dolby Digital 5.1 track, at a bitrate of 448 kbps.

  Pioneer Shows 3D Blu-ray Players

  At CEDIA Expo 2010, Pioneer Electronics displayed three new Blu-ray players, models BDP-430, BDP-41FD Elite and BDP-43FD Elite, with prices tentatively set at $299, $399 and $499, respectively. All three support the Blu-ray 3D format, as well as "online streaming of popular video content site and optional wireless connectivity.

  Last spring, when Warner Home Video announced a wave of science-fiction titles for Blu-ray release, it intriguingly included a title that had already come out on BD in 2007: Richard Linklater's A Scanner Darkly. Some enthusiasts hoped then that the studio would add a lossless audio track to the movie, but that's not the case. The major change is that for this re-release, one of the special features on the first edition has been dropped.

  Sony Announces 3D Front Projector

  At CEDIA Expo 2010, Sony unveiled its new SXRD front projector, model VPL-VW90ES - the company's first 3D projector and also the first to be branded with Sony's "Elevated Standard" (ES) denomination. Sony also announced the VPL-VWPRO1, a 2D home theater solution designed to deliver a "high-quality cinematic experience at a more affordable price."

  Depeche Mode Live Blu-ray Coming Up

  The first live Blu-ray from the electronic music band Depeche Mode is coming soon. On November 8, EMI-Mute will release Depeche Mode: Tour of the Universe - Live in Barcelona, shot over two nights in Barcelona, Spain during their recent tour in support of the Sounds of the Universe album. It will be presented in two BDs, with extra tracks, a tour documentary, videos, and the "screen films" specially created by Anton Corbijn.

  Oppo Unveils New Blu-ray Player with 3D, Streaming and Wireless

  Oppo has just unveiled its new Blu-ray player, model BDP-93, the successor to the acclaimed BDP-83. The BDP-93 will have all the functionalities of the 83, plus Blu-ray 3D support (with dual HDMI outputs), Netflix and CinemaNow streaming, wireless-N networking, and eSATA port. It will carry the same retail price of $499 as the BDP-83. No specific availability date was given, but the manufacturer expects to have it out by November, in time for the holiday shopping season.

  Video: Guillermo del Toro Fills up on Blu-ray at Criterion

  Guillermo del Toro recently visited the offices of The Criterion Collection to review the supplements on the upcoming Blu-ray of his directorial debut, Cronos. The studio has published a video that features Del Toro being invited to the DVD and Blu-ray storeroom and raiding the BD shelves for the titles still missing in his collection, offering a window into his movie tastes.

  Sharp Teams up with Universal for Despicable Me 3D Promotion

  Sharp Electronics Corporation today announced that it is teaming with Illumination Entertainment and Universal Studios Home Entertainment to promote the new 3D line of Quattron LED LCD TVs (model LE925). The campaign will feature the celebrated Minions from Despicable Me jumping off the screen. The 3D Blu-ray of this movie will also be offered with the purchase of a qualifying Sharp 3D TV or Blu-ray player. Note: this bundle will not be exclusive.

  JVC Introduces 3D-enabled D-ILA Home Theater Projectors

  JVC USA today unveiled six new 3D-enabled 1080p home theater projectors at CEDIA EXPO 2010, using D-ILA projection technology and active shutter glasses, with prices starting at $4,495. JVC also unveiled the DLA-HD250, the industry's first sub-$3,000 1080p D-ILA home theater projector.

  Blockbuster Files for Chapter 11

  Video rental chain Blockbuster Inc. filed today for bankruptcy protection to the US Bankruptcy Court in the Southern District of New York. The company said it had reached an agreement with a group of bondholders on a plan of reorganization, which may involve closing between 500 and 800 stores, on top of 1,000 stores already announced to be shuttered.

  At the CEDIA fair, Sharp is introducing two Blu-ray Disc players with support for the Blu-ray 3D specification and streaming, under models BD-HP80U and BD-HP90U. The electronics maker also unveiled its first 3D LCD TVs, in 60-inch and 52-inch screen sizes, with a unique on-glasses 3D-2D conversion feature, and the first 1080p 3D DLP projector for the home.

  Mitsubishi Announces 3D Projector

  At the CEDIA fair, Mitsubishi Digital Electronics America introduced its newest Diamond 3D 1080p full-HD home theater projector. It is powered by an SXRD reflective liquid-crystal optical engine and boasts up to 120,000:1 full on/full off dynamic contrast. For 3D viewing, it uses IR sensors communicating with active-shutter glasses.

  As expected, Disney's Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time was the top-selling title on Blu-ray during the week ended September 19, according to data from Nielsen VideoScan First Alert. Second and third place were taken by two titles apparently outside the BD demographic: Letters to Juliet and Glee: The Complete First Season. The top-selling title of the previous week, Killers, dropped to sixth place. Update: sales charts and figures added.

This action/comedy animated movie, about a wannabe super-villain whose life is unexpectedly changed by a trio of determined little orphans, was a critical and commercial success, earning over $240 million at the box office.

  Funimation has announced that it will soon start releasing "some wild Japanese horror films" on Blu-ray, starting with Vampire Girl vs. Frankenstein Girl, which has a street date of October 19. This film about the two classic monsters re-imagined as super-hot – and extremely lethal – Japanese schoolgirls was directed by Yoshihiro Nishimura (Tokyo Gore Police). It won the Audience Award at the 2009 NY Asian Film Festival.

  Oppo Confirms BDP-80 Discontinued, Hints at Future Blu-ray Plans

  Confirming the scoop this site gave you just days ago about the end of life for the Oppo BDP-80 Blu-ray player, Oppo Digital replied to our query for confirmation with the following: "The BDP-80 has been discontinued and we do not have any immediate plans to design or sell a replacement product." The CE maker clarified that it is working on a new Blu-ray platform, but it will probably not be released until early 2011, or "if we are lucky," by end-of-year 2010.

  On October 5, 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment will release Bones: The Complete Fifth Season on Blu-ray, and the release details have been officially revealed just now. The 22 episodes of the fifth season of this offbeat procedural will be presented in four BDs. The studio has not announced seasons 1-3 on Blu-ray yet.

  Warner Home Video has announced that they will bring the Sergio Leone film Once Upon a Time in America to Blu-ray on January 11th. The film, which features starring roles by Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci, James Woods, and Jennifer Connelly, will be presented in its uncut, 229-minute form. Currently rated at #87 on the IMDB.com Top 250, the film is widely considered one of the best gangster films of all time.
